C5 brakes on a g-body

ok, since the s10 chasis is almost exactly the same as g-body, im ppealing to the g-body guys. i have access to a complete c5 corvette brake system (wll, the whole car really. im nabbing some parts or myself while parting it out for the owner). im grabbing the brake calipers, abutment brackets, rotors, and rear backing plates/emergency brakes, as well as the booster and master.

i know ill need to cut my spindle and use a set of adapter brackets and cut down stock rotors on the front. my question is moreabout the rear and master. the bolt pattern appears to be identical to the LS1 rear disc backing plate, and theres some sites that describe how to mdify the 7.5 to work. as anyone tried this before?

also, how much work will it take to use the booster/master? i knw the brake lines/distribution block will have to be changed, anything else?

I'm installing rear C5 disc on my '85 Monte SS right now. I got the brackets from Ed Miller...they fit great. You'll need to change your combination valve to a disc/disc one but from what I hear, the master cylinder will work fine. Here is a write up that I just did installing my rear disc.

It is a very easy upgrade...as long as everything unbolts. My first obstacle was when I went to remove the axles to install the brackets--my rear center pin bolt broke off inside the differential. After breaking 13 drill bits and 2 extractor kits, I had to pull the rearend out and extract the pin with brute force. I just got my rear axle assembly back from the ring & pinion shop to inspect for damages...luckily my axle was in OK shape and I only lost $200 because of a lousy $2.47 bolt broke.

I just finished test fitting the brackets, calipers, and rotors and everything looks great. I've decided to mount the calipers in the forward position because the shock was very close to the caliper in the rearward position. I'm not running an e-brake, so this setup will work fine for me.

It's actually a good thing that I pulled the axle because I'm upgrading to all new stainless rear brake line and with no axle in the way, getting at, and installing the lines will be easier.

After the rear is done, I'm going with the C5 front hybrid brake setup that will fit inside my 17" wheels using 12-inch rotors. So far, I've purchased the SC&C stage 2 setup and got my lower arms sandblasted. I've installed the tall ball joints and energy suspension bushings.

I just got an e-mail from a guy off the Monte Carlo message board that is running the C5 front and rear setup using the stock master cylinder. He says it works great, stops fast, and has perfect pedal feel.

Will that position work if the rear is lowered about 2"?

You shouldn't have any issues. I have a few more plate sets if you'd like to try them out. Also, there is no provision for the e-brake with this style plate. I'm working on it but Tobin's shop does allow for the e-brake with custom plates.

Yes, this bracket will work with a vehicle lowered 2". If fact, the photo above shows the axle completely jacked up with the snubber resting on the frame. I didn't have the springs installed when I took that shot. I still have over 1/2" clearance between the frame and caliper.

Find a set of 98-02 S10 2WD Blazer front knuckles. No machining required on them (just a little grinding), they come from the factory with a slip on rotor & 2 piston caliper. I made the adapter bracket to mount the C5 Vette parts.

who did you have make the bracket for you? i have thought about drawing brackets up on cad and taking them to the machine shop but i am not sure what they would charge?

Beautiful work here, I'm working on the same thing. I'm waiting to see if ed miller works out brackets for the rear that will allow me to use a parking brake, my car is a 5speed so I would really like to have a working brake. for the front I was planning on ATS spindles since I'm building the car to hit the road course but the ZQ8 spindles are MUCH cheaper and I might have to go this route till I have the funds. any idea when you might have some of those caliper mounting brackets available ? I currently have the calipers, rotors, backing plates, parking brake cables and all the hardware (front and rear) from a C5. the only thing I'm short to do the swap is spindles, mounting brackets and rims to clear, I was hoping my 16" boyds would clear but everything I see says they wont.

Right now I'm running a stock 7.5 10bolt, once I finish getting the car together I dont think the rear is going to last long (350 TPI 8-10lbs of boost and a 5speed) I will be eventuially swapping it out to a GN 8.5 I dont ever plan on C-clip eliminators. I have a friend running 10's in a regal with a procharged SBC and he's using a GN rear with nothing more than a set of moser axles, on slicks and a trans brake he's got about 30 runs on it and hasnt broken anything so I think ill be safe with it.

The flange on an 8.5 is the same as a 7.5. I know I have to modify the flange, thats no problem for me, I'm an animal with the plasma cutter :)

What are you using for rear caliper hoses

kore3 sells the front and rear stainless flex lines. The prices are reasonable and it's a kit that has all of the brackets & hardware that you'll need. I just got mine in the mail last week.
