About how much can I expect to pay for a mild custom center console? Nothing too fancy, something like these...

This is my favorite, which I think is a modified 80's Camaro console.

Feel free to share any experiences you have of building your own, I'm considering that as well. However I'm a bit turned off by how much a custom console might weigh, being made of wood and all. I'd prefer to find a factory console from a different application that would work in my car.

You are looking at around $ 200 to $ 400 for one like this. We just finished making molds to made a custom console out of fiberglass and carbon fiber. This console will start out at $ 750.00 and up.

Lightweight fiberglass, easy to modify...

Pics of my installation are on their website

Some custom consoles are made out of wood, then covered with carpeting. So, you could do it cheap. You may even be able to do it yourself if you went that path.

BTW if you know how to work with fiberglass just make your own. What I am going to do it to make a the shape I want out of that styrofoam they use for home insulation. It can be shaped pretty easy. Then simply lay fiberglass over it until it gets the desired strength. Then sand smooth and either paint or cover it with some material.

what he said. if you can paint, you can lay fiberglass. it's not hard.

and then you can either smooth it out and paint it, or cover it with leather/vinyl and/or carpet for a stock look.

Depends on how nice you want it and what kind of quality you want, we have built consoles from $1000 to $6000 out of steel and painted and so on. The more work that goes into them hours of shapping the more it will cost, if you go on the wood side as sugested you can do it for $500 to a grand depending on what you wrap it with and how complicated you get.

nice consoles, but wouldn't that steel one weight quite a bit? Was is used as a structural member as well?

They weight less than a wood built one and will never break.

Yeah, that's an 82-92 Camaro console. All they did was use a hole saw to put some cup holders in and modify the radio plate. Looks like just a flat piece of carbon fiber or plastic fastened in place. Then they re-covered the deck lid, and put in a custom shifter. You could do most of that yourself pretty easily.

I built mine for $30.00!! With some wood left over! It was the covering that was expensive. It cost me $200 to have it covered in some nice soft black vinyl with the boot for the shifter. It also has a storage compartment in the rear between the seats and 2 cup holders behind the shifter. I've had nothing but compliments on it... saying, " it looks like it belongs there". I will try to post some pics or pm me with your email and i'll send them that way. Easy to build.

Any more pics of the console in the red car above? I like how they worked around the shifter and would like a bit of a closer look...
