      low profile slicks recommendation please??

I need some help - I am running 315/35 /17 bfg drag radials now - cant keep them on the ground :(

I have mini tubs so I cant go wider - and the suspension is lowered so I cant run tall slicks on it either.

Is there anything that is a true slick that is low profile - I can go a bit taller in the profile - but I definately need more tracktion - this is for the dragway only so they dont have to be street legal.

      help!!!!!

The same size Mickey Thompson DR will hook better than the BFG.

You probably need to look into a 15" or 16" rim with a 50 series tire to get good traction.

wont fit over my rear calipers/rotors

I guess I could look at downsizing them as well.

I'm in the same boat. 13" rear rotors doesn't leave much room. I'm thinking about stepping down to a 12" rotor so I can run a 16" rim. Another bad thing about such small sidewall is that the tire offers no give when you launch, thus breaking parts. Couple Cobra guys just broke 2 half shafts on the weekend due to 305/35/18 drag radials. Thats what I run aswell, but am getting rid of them ASAP.

Im not worried about breaking anything - I put in forged 39 spline currie rear end and axles and had a custom made steel driveshaft for 1700 hp made for it so nothing breaks.

I just would like something that will hook a bit better - I can spin my tires at 80 mph under acceleration in 3rd gear

I did put a full detroit locker in the rear for safety to eliminate fishtailing when its breaking loose - so at least its 2 nice and straight rubber trails on the road.

one thing all my friends said before I built the car was - "build it to more than you will put down on it and use quality parts" its more expensive up front and cheaper after the first week when you have to rebuild everything you break

That's usually due to wheel hop..

      Here's a picture of my Formula wrinkling 35 series sidewalls (1.59 60'):

Have you tinkered with getting a 16" on there? CCW makes wheels to fit late model vettes with a smooth inter barrel that allows them to run a 16" on the back.

I run a 335/35/17 on the street and a 26x10x15 MT slick for the track. Mind you, I only have the 12" Wilwood setup on the rear. Check on your install instructions for the minimum specs for backspacing and maybe try and work backwards?

haha same issue here. I have no issue kicking down into 3rd on the highway and leaving rubber once the turbo spools.

And the cobra guys are no breaking due to wheel hop, just shocks the drivetrain that much. Not saying your wrong, because wheel hop will cause that failure for sure. Just not in my examples.

Most Guys with Cobras making any power (its not tough to make 600 in these cars) Move to a solid rear axle. For dragracing purposes the cobra IRS is a weak link.

      very nice :D

Always funny to see the look on peoples faces.

I had some guys come up to me at mustang week in july and tell me they were sorry to see that I had blown my engine. I was driving the small oval at the myrtle beach speedway and would come out of the corner at about 70 or 80 in 3rd gear and apparently when I was accelerating out of the corner smoke was coming from the rear end - I looked at the video and went up to the track and it was smoking the tires every time. I told them - the engine is not blown up - its just breaking the tires loose out of the corners.

they had that funny look on their face as well

      lol

Hoosier has a few shoes that are in your specific tire size. You'll want to look into the A6 and R6 tire.

that looks like the best option so far - the drag radial is as close to a true slick as I have seen. I will grab a few of these and see how they hook.

      THANKS!!!!!!

We've had a few guys run these. The vette dudes in town say they work well, especialy on the stick cars where the SR's just can't handle the shock at launch. These are about an inch narower than your 315's and are 26" tall, compared to your 315's wich are about 25.7" tall. So they might fit.

      Cheers, BBCC

      m/h ?

I assume that is a byas ply tire with a bit of sidewall give?

any handling issues or feeling mushy in the rear end at high speed? what is his top speed in the quarter on this car?

what kind of horse power is he running?

Jake is talking about M&H Racemaster... which is a bias ply, near wrinkle wall, 1320 tire. Yes, it would be a handful at speed in any other direction than straight... just don't ask me how I know this. I personally believe that M&H makes the best tire for dedicated 1320 "street use" (wink, wink) as I found them to be the most compliant to... well, the 'streets'. Cold, dirty... loose... they work.

Another good tire for digging is McCreary. Years ago when Terminal Island reopened (Los Angles area)... I ran a 9.5" on my 69 into low 1.5's with simple J-bar's on a stock Z28 three leaf... and ran 10.50's. I drove them on the street all the time... but it was "slow in slow out" kind-of driving... no late braking and going hot at the apex.

But in your topic of "low profile slick"... the Hoosier's are actually obtainable. Their A6 and R6 are road racing slicks... that can be used in drag racing... they just have a profile of a normal low profile street tire construction. Michelin, Goodyear and Pirelli also have low profile slicks but... you have to 'know' somebody to get those... as they are special construction tires for specific sanctioning bodies. Hoosier and BFG/Kumho sell low profile slicks to the GP... without braking the bank.

Just remember... to educate yourself on heat cycling of low profile slicks.

FWIW... I'd try the Hoosiers for a low profile slick.

I'll have to check out the m/h product. Street tires are worthless on low boost, my m/t et streets were GREAT till they had about 1/4 of their life left, now they feel like a street tire. Even at 15psi of air in them! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUS8wHTzOk4
