I use ER70 (normal mild steel rod). Heres an article from Lincoln:

What's your reaction to Lincoln's recommendation to use mild steel filler rod? (And not just Lincoln... I found many sites that recommend the same thing). In fact, most specifically say not to use 4130 filler rod.
Do you heat treat after welding? Just wonderin'...

Race Dezert has without a doubt some of the most expernced fabricators who just happen to have internet access... not the other way around like found on some sites....(not pointing anything out) heres a little thread on 4130 any why you shouldnt use 4130 filler rod in most applications... Use er312 on pretty much everything... http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23544&highlight=4130+filler+rod
