I know it is probably a good way to get me killed around here, but I was wondering if you could get an intake to put a carburator on a 98 vette LS1. I have come across a motor (mostly complete, with harness and computer) and I am kind of scared of the rats nest of wires. If I can't convert it, I will most likley sell it. Can you put a carb on this motor?

Sure - the Edelbrock manifold leaps to mind as a simple way to adapt... you can use the Edelbrock / MSD ignition control and you're on your way.
But the wires really aren't that scary when you get into it..

Or GMPP makes a complete kit: carb intake, fuel pump, and distributor.
Just like the old days.

Painless wire also has a really no brainer set up.

AHHH the good old days. If I don't sell it I will lookl into the gmpp set up.
don't be afraid of the wires for running EFI, it's not that bad really. The tunning is more of a problem but just leave that to a professional and you're done.
carb works perfectly fine though. If that's what you prefer, you'll still get the benefits of it being an LSx.

Works great! You wouldnt believe how smooth running a carbed/cammed LS1 runs. I have a pretty big cam and it idles relitively smooth in general and revs perfect and cruises just like efi. Once you get your carb setup right its easy to tune with the MSD box.

Did it cost an outrageous amount to do the conversion?

My carburetor i rebuilt and setup was about $300 including the 50cc acclerater pump. (72 primaries, 76 secondaries, 6.5pv)
Holley 97gph pump $100 or so
victor jr intake - $300
MSD ignition box - $320
And thats all you really need.... optional things i have are
Map sensor and connector - $40 (for part throttle timing advance)
Fast dual Wideband O2 system - $420
very easy, cost about the same as using fuel injection though if you're starting from scratch.
BS it does. To do EFI right, you would need to add a fuel tank with baffles, return line, modify the pick up and do a fair amount of wiring to mount the computer etc. You would also need to fab up a CAI/filter/MAF combo. Thats assuming he got a working computer and MAF with the motor. Adding the price of a custom tune into the mix, the cost is not even close.

sorry I know it's a old thread. I'll get a LS1 for my 79 G-Body (monte carlo) soon, also want a T56 anytime later.
I want to run a carb with it because it seems to be easier for me with all the fuel system. I also more like the "classic" carb & air-cleaner look :twothumbs for my car.
but I don't know what I should get for my engine? what do you guys think about the Edelbrock Performer LS1 Intake Manifold Kit #7118 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7118/)?
I know that ignition box that comes with the kit only got 6 different timing curves (means no adjusting the box) but maybe that's good for my needs? and which carb do you suggest for that kit?

get the msd 6010 it has better pills and it is computer tunable. you can add a map sensor to it for partial throttle timing advance. the edelbrock kit isn't computer tunable.

If I was to do my motor setup all over I would just get a LS with a carb adnd be done with it, keep it simple so its on the road more :)

Anybody build an old school style carb LS motor - you know high comp, high lift rumpity rump cam, how's it sound and more importantly run.

Kevin,
you don't necessarily need it. However it provides you with the proper (weathertight) plugs and wiring so you can pick up the (VSS) signal for the speedo and depending on what you want it also allows you to wire in backup lamps, and reverse lockout. I've only used the wiring for VSS signal. Don't have back up lights (yet) on my camaro and the reverse lock out just needs a bit of power to overcome the spring pressure (no harm).

okay thanks René!
now what fuel pump I need for the carb'd LS1? I heard Holley Blue is very loud/too loud?

Shawn (see first page) apparently uses this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-12-801-1/
According to Holley a Fuel Pressure regulator is not required (for most applications). I think Shawn can answer that one and should also be able to tell you how loud it is.

How is the fuel mileage on your carb setups? Anywhere close to EFI?

Yes! I´m curious too.
Is it possible to get a decent mpg with carb setup, when You go on the Highway?

Cant wait to get mine running! I have the Edlebrock Vic Jr and the MSD 6010 box.
I hope i get an answer on this old thread.
I need help with the edelbrock timing control made by msd , the box that comes with the 7118 kit.
Timing seems way off ! Loud knocking when flooring . Contacted MSD and Edelbrock both gave me tge run around . So am looking at the forums for help.
Stock lq4 (6.0L)
Edelbrock 750 carb
Edelbrock 7118 kit
Holley blue pump
Mallory regulator set to 6 psi
Mechanics said its the timing ! Edelbrock said no way go back to a mechanic and change the carb needle?
Msd said call edelbrock we made to their specs!
Lots of threads about timing being too advanced on the box ! I cannot figure it out
Any help is appreciated

have you tried all of the chips. and is 6lbs enough? I didn't run a regulator when I had my carb setup. Now ive switched to the Holley Terminator EFI setup, but I never had any knocking. If you have a bog, or stumble, then you need to up your accelerator pump from a std 30cc to 50cc. I had to do that initially with my setup.

For those that may do a carb conversion on LS1/LS6 or LS3 engines, Holley has a mid rise, single plane 4150 flanged manifold. Pretty good looking piece of hardware. They are also available for multiport configurations.
