View Full Version : Removing rust from cast iron?

I'm going to do a few small things on my car, one of them being painting the master cylinder.

However, it's got some very fine rust on it, and I need to remove it.

Any ideas?

As a different option, how hard would it be to safely smooth it out?

Thanks!

just take a wire wheel to it, should clean right up.

Or, just use por-15 and apply it right over the surface rust.

Muriatic Acid, or lots of heat... but that isn't good for a MC. ;)

On my MC, I used POR-15 beacuse I wanted gloss black. If you want some other color, I might suggest the same, but mist it with etch primer when it is tacky, then use your paint over it.

try this stuff http://www.evaporust.com/ it works great! no joke. Just soak your part in it for a couple hours and it will come out like brand new. The stuff is non toxic and it does not eat rubber or paint. I have used it on gas tanks, nuts and bolts and sheet metal. All with great results. You can also use molasses. search on the web for more info. You can buy evaporust at autozone

I was planning on Duplicolor Cast Aluminum for the color. However, I see POR-15 has a silver so that might work. I'll have to check locally.

Would this stuff be good for the sub-frame? I'm looking for a semi gloss finish that will hold up.

Those colors are not the same. I suggest sticking to your planned color and do what I outlined.

A lot of guys use it on the SF. I used it, but etched & then used rustoleum semi-glass black (777 or something liek that) for an oe look. But I used straight POR on my LCAs and it looks fine. That stuff gets tougher over time. It was easier to scratch it a week later than 3 months later. But you must prep for POR - very clean, and if the metal is smooth use their etch stuff. Or it will peel in nice neat sheets.

I'll go with the straight POR, picked up some tonight. I may use it on the 10 bolt, just to clean it up.

I just painted the M/C with the POR-15 black, and I think I'm going to leave it black.

It looks really nice, and since it was cast with a rough surface, I just brushed it on and it look good. Nice and shiny, I would say in between semi-gloss and full gloss.

Thanks for the help!
