are you re torquing them after 50 miles from when they are put on, and do you have wheel spacers these can cause loose and broken studs in addition to not applying enough torque

car didnt even have 50 miles =I ...and no spacer at first i mounted them with a half inch snap on gun the second time i torqued them down @ 85ft pounds as told ...with an electronic snap on wrench so im sure it was accurate...so now i dont know what could be the problem =I

. my horror story. I did all the entire pro touring and restoration treatment on my 68 camaro. Well after I stopped using the car as my daily driver I decided to swap out the rear for a 3.73 eaton posi rear end and a set of hotckis multi <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=5&k=leaf%20springs" onmouseover="window.status='<a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=5&k=leaf%20springs" onmouseover="window.status='leaf springs'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">leaf springs</a>'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">leaf springs</a>. Well I had work at 1 p.m and started at 9 a.m. After running a little late I slapped the wheels on the car and snugged the lugs up before I went in to eat. While I was eating my brother lowered the car and put all tools and the jack inside the garage so that he could close up the garage and leave. Well while inside my boss called me and told me to hurry up as they were very busy and needed lots of help. So I hurried eating got dressed and hopped in the camaro. I never torqued down the wheels and ended up losing a quarter panel over it. One mistake I will never do again. I really didnt care because the quarter has rust bubbles coming through and it needed to be done anyway. So to pass on an important lesson that I was taught. Always torque your <a s hrelug%20nuts" Also could it possibly be that your lug nuts got stripped somehow?

Rick, I feel your pain! I lost a rear wheel at 1am on HWY 101 just North of Novato doing about 70! I was in my 64 Chevelle when I saw sparks outside my drivers side window.
I had an eaton pro-posi unit in my 12blt. Being that it was more than a little stiff on the street, when I made slow turns it would ratchet around a corner. Not realizing it had loosened my lugs, I lost two on the way home that night. On the 101 the stud's snapped off. I was one lucky MF though. The hub ended up just grinding the crap out of the inner wheel, the tire didn't blow, and I saved the quarter pannel. (This was only a few months after I had painted it too!) 4:30am I arrived back home on the hook, which wasn't totaly uncommon for me, lol. The next weeekend I pulled the axle, pressed new studs into it, had the wheel re-balanced (only damaged on the inside lip and you couldn't see the damage from the outside and it had worn smooth), and put it all back together. I think I was out mabye $40 in the end.
I was one Lucky MF. I learned to use the Ford gear slick lube in addition to the gear oil. Solved the problem with the posi and I never had to worry about it again.
Another suggestion is to not use any type of impact wrench on wheel lugs. We had an old 85 Chevy Desiel that we elongated the studs on by using an impack wrench. Not good. It may have been a fluke, but now we make sure that we only use a hand torque wrench with all our car wheels now.
Oh, make sure you have APR studs too. It's just safe insurance. I think summit sells them in packs of 4 for about $5.
Hope this helps!

Rick,
Glad to hear that nothing serious happened. If the lug nuts have come loose on all the wheels, I would have to assume that your lug nuts are incompatible with your wheels and/or wheel studs.
1) More than likely, the nuts are a little too short for the length of your wheel studs. You mentioned long studs. As such they will bottom out on the face of the stud before they will fully clamp on the wheel. This can also leave you with the impression that they are adequately torqued.
2) But it's also possible that your lug nuts and wheels are incompatible. I.E. mismatched taper.
