View Full Version : Is it common for disc brakes to be unbalanced?

I'm down to checking my rear Baer 12" discs for being unbalanced. Just wondering how common this is or if anyone has had to have them balanced?

Most quality rotors will be edge mill balanced, so you should be able to see machined reliefs in the outside edge of the disc, assuming it needed some correction after casting and machining. I'm pretty sure Baer's rotors are balanced...at least they were back when DBA was making them for Baer IIRC. I'm not entirely sure now.

Am I correct to assume that your rotor is hub-centrically fit onto the axle pilot register and not showing any undue axial runnout?

I have had the rear wheels off the car and up on stands, they run true but I have a mph vibe I've been chasing for a while and now I'm just reaching at this point. Neutral, clutch disengaged, in gear samr vibe.

New TKO, Moser 12 bolt, new d/s, pinion angles... been there.

I'm thinking maybe a GOOD driveshaft shop like Denny's should build me one, I'm thinking my local guy screwed up. Dunno.

Denny's was great to work with, Dean. They didn't oversell me, too.

Good to hear Rick, I was hoping to have them build one before Carlisle(I called Monday) but there was 180 people before me.

We are leaving at noon today, we'll take it easy and stay out of the vibe zone.

See you there!

What speed? If it is 65MPH, it is almost always tire balance. I have never heard of a rotor being out of balance enough to actually feel. Now warped? Yeah. out of balance? No.

If it is a vibration you "drive through", it is not a driveshaft. Driveshaft will be progressive vibration.

Ah Hah ! ,
I got me a vibration too.
This thread is helpful.

I agree with Frank. I don't think rotors would carry enough "radial mass" to cause a noticable vibration.

Not to say I would slap on a pair of imbalanced rotors, though.

The only time I've seen rotors cause any vibration issues by themselves has been when they were installed in a lug-centric application instead of hub-centric like they should be in most slip-on rotor applications. Most quality rotors use good castings and as such, don't require much to come into balance to begin with.
