View Full Version : racking my brain on brakes

Back when I originally purchased my Firebird in 1999 I put an MP brakes 11" power disc kit on the front of the car.

I'm at a loss on what I really want to do with the brake setup. Obviously I've already got this kit in place, and for a street application it works fine.

However, I'm really looking at going with the ATS tall spindle and these brakes will not fit that spindle. This would require me to purchase new rotors and calipers.

Additionally I need to get a new rear-end on order to replace the bop open carrier 10 bolt in the car now :barf:

Obviously I'll be placing discs out back as well.

This is basically a price battle at this point.

Do I go with the AFX spindle and upgrade to a wilwood or bear system in the front as well as the rear?

Or do I go the cheaper route and do the SC&C stage II + kit utilizing my stock style spindle, keep the front brakes I've got and do the MP rear brakes on the new rear?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

This car will be mostly a street driver, but would have a few autocross events as well.

Can't really tell you which one to use but if you do go with the ATS spindles, any brake caliper and rotor designed to fit a C5/C6 Corvette will work.

I suppose a cheaper alternative would be to simply go with corvette brakes. The calipers and rotors can be had on the cheap.

Although I'm not entirely sure how that works on the rear-end. As far as bracket, and mounting goes.

..the rears. I highly recommend 98+ Camaro rear disc, try used stuff. I've been trying to get left rear 98+ Camaro disc backing but the show BO till July. They bolt right up and work nice. There are several threads here on the swap.

BTW how is your project going?

Jason,

Go with the AFX spindles. The Corvette brakes are very good and if you want something more fancy you can go with the C6 ZO6 brakes.
