Well I've been lurking this site for a while now, and figured I would share my project, as long as it's cool with you guys. I know it's not a pro-touring car, but the plans for this thing is a mean street machine, that can handle well and put it's fair share of power down on the pavement.

April 2007 was the last time I took a bunch of pictures of it, this being two of them.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/April22_2007042-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/bg3-1.jpg

July came and after having the trans built the August before I had it blow on me 3 times, all the builder told me were they were bad parts, never got a chance to push the truck much, and was told the trans would hold more than I was asking for, well after the third time I convinced myself I would be careful till I could afford to order a level 5 80e or something similar. Well with my luck it blew again, no reason what so ever I was just on my way to work and it locked up. When the fluid was cold it would move, heated up and it would go anyway. So it went back in my garage, and I convinced myself, not so much my friends, that I was going to tear it completly down and build it frame up.

The plans as of right now, a basic over veiw:

Originally I modified the stock frame, and finished it besides my shock mounts

But then I decided I'd rather build my own frame, so I built a table
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0192-1.jpg
Threw this frame on it
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0195-1.jpg
Jigged everything I needed
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0198-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0207-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM02641-1.jpg

Ordered some custom spec rails from AutoWeld
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM02511-1.jpg
Starting to lay them out
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0260-1.jpg
Here you can see how the stock hyrdoformed frame compound bends in, so I needed to mimic that
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0256-1.jpg
Marked the angles
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0266-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0268-1.jpg
Cut
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM02711-1.jpg
Clamped into place and double checked everything
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0272-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0284-1.jpg
Welded the seams up
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM02871-1.jpg
Then I used the same method to tie in the rail rails since they were 10" closer together than the mid section
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0361-1.jpg
Cut and Bevel
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0374-1.jpg
Weld and then mark them for final fitment
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0378-1.jpg
Clamping up and getting ready for final fitment
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0379-1.jpg
Both sides complete and welded up as one piece
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0365-1.jpg
Had to smooth the welds on the inside before I put them together otherwise I would never have got them smooth
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0367-1.jpg
These welds were tight enough to do, never mind a grinder
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0368-1.jpg

GMracer
05-13-2008, 10:41 AM
Starting on the next side, also explains how I strengthened those seams, and kept it hidden
Since I did the other side completely and got it right I knew where everything had to be cut and drilled
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM03671-1.jpg
Drilled the plug weld holes
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0371-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0375-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0376-1.jpg
Made some plates, 3/16"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM03791-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM03801-1.jpg
Welded them in on one side
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM03811-1.jpg
Slide them together clamped everything up nice and tight
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM03831-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM03891-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0397-1.jpg
Once everything was good, I layed the rail flat, clamped and welded the seam
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0399-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0400-1.jpg

GMracer

Once the cooled I needed to grind this one smooth also
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0403-1.jpg
Everything was set just need to get the final welds in this weekend, due to being in school till tomorrow then I got the summer off.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0409-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0407-1.jpg
I also cut the rear frame rails down 4" I was going to run them higher but decided against it, so I plated them the same way.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0363-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/HPIM0364-1.jpg

Also once I get my 2" Spindles in I will be able to layout the front suspension and order my laser cut brackets for that. Also got to send out my 14b to have it narrowed in a week or so. Sucked that I had to cut off all those brackets I welded up already. Oh well, plans change.

Very cool, wish I had the money and time to do my chassi now. That and I need to get something else to drive before I tear my truck apart.

Was it expensive having custome rails made. I thought that there were companies out there that did it but scared of the cost never really looked into it.

GMracer

I think it was about 1100 shipped for custom spec rails

Too cool bro. Have you plotted out the susp pickups and analyzed the info?

GMracer
05-14-2008, 10:59 AM
plotted out the susp pickups? did you mean the trucks suspension?

with my spindles and the control arms setup where I plan to, the rollcenter will be about 1" above the ground, going to run 4-5* of caster, all the pivots (arms and steering are stock location) which helps with clearances and such. Out back, I haven't plotted out how I'm going to setup the bars, whatever fits basically, and I will set my IC right above the front bumper.
I don't have a program or anything to do the plotting, and since it is a street car, and I don't have the ability to weigh and get perfect calculations I will leave enough adjust ability to go from there. Like I said though it's not going to be a strict track truck, so with what I plan I think it will work ideal for my plans.

Any tips or suggestions are welcome, I'm open to trying new methods.

Well haven't updated due to me forgetting the camera, but I've been working on mainly figuring out my front suspension I wanted to make it perfect at ride height, and finally after moving everything upwards, motor 1.5" up i got my arms at 2* LCA and the uppers at 6* this is set at 5.5" ride height. Tire will sit right at the lip of the front tires.

So with that figured out, I started the front crossmember

I have a 90 454SS that would be such a great canidate for this type of build. But!!!!! I do not know how to weld, let alone make the measurements accurately, :nopity: and I do not want a Frankenstein truck.

Upper control arm frame mounts to be exact, with stock alignment adjustment.
First took care of the rear crossmember, doubles as a bed mount, however I'm considering a tilt bed, not to be a show off, more so for ease of maintenance and such

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/HPIM0840-1.jpg
Then got the rear cab mount done... wish I would have planned the frame a little more I don't love the fact it's so long, but that's what happens when you do the first one, you learn as you go

Finally the core support mounts, wanted to retain a factory design
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/HPIM0874-1.jpg

That's it for now, I'm looking for a T56 atleast the case so I can finish the last of the crossmembers, having trouble finding one for cheap.

Judging by the amount of work you've put into your build you've got the right to show off a little bit.

Thats badass, is the T56 going to clear the Silverado cab? You going to have to bang up the tranny tunnel?

GMracer
10-20-2008, 05:50 PM
I'm not too worried about the trans tunnel, the whole motor was moved since I relocated all my suspension also I am body dropping the cab so I planned on cutting the tunnel out before I even put the cab over the trans, since I know it's going to need to be clearanced.

hows it look to you guys?

if I make it 18 5/8" on the frame end it bring it to roll understeer and still 0* just figured I'd mention that, while putting the AS at 80%

Chassis is looking great btw. But one question I have (because I am in the process of developing a new suspenion for a chassis for an s10), what did you use to determine the center of gravity height?

The truck I'm workin on is completely dis-assembled, I have no way of measuring the COG. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Xmas break is hear and I want to get this frame done... so without further or do, tonights progress...

I wanted to tie in the two front crossmembers, so I began with some tubing
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/12/HPIM1581-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/12/HPIM1580-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/12/HPIM1623-1.jpg
Now this plate will be welded to the frame and the nuts will be on the inside, a hole will be drilled to clearance the nuts and the plate will sit flush on the frame and welded all around.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/12/HPIM1625-1.jpg

Great fabbing,as always.
Narrowed I think rougly 6" inches each side from stock width, I can't remember exactly from a stock housing just that the new one was 54" end of tube to end of tube I believe. I'm running 20x15 Intros, with the wheel center just about centered in the hoop, I want a dish but not a rediculous dish set all the way back.

Awesome fab work. Just read the whole thread for the first time.

I'm curious. What is the main purpose behind the custom frame? Sounds like front suspension will be pretty much stock geometry so is it to fit the 4 link in the rear with the fat tires? Do you think you will save weight versus factory frame?

GMracer
12-27-2008, 11:46 AM
nope, the whole front suspension was redesigned, moved everything upwards to accommodate the 5" lower ride height while keeping my RC at a better height to make it handle the power in the turns. Plus the rear half was yes, to fit the fat meats.

EDIT I'm not sure if I will save weight or not, I'm designing it on strength not weight, since this is only my first frame to build.

Rear suspension mock up, I HATE waiting for laser cut brackets to come in, so I took my sheet of 3/16"s and some cut off wheels and flap disks and made my own brackets... yet again

And roughly where the bags will sit
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/HPIM1771-1.jpg
These are NOT the bags I'm using, I'm going to run the new f9200s instead, and the upper link bracket will probably be part of the bag bracket.

So I finally got my new rear bags, f9100s and at $200 a pc I was skeptical, till they showed up and I love them. On the right is a f9000, (blue tape protecting the billet)

First of all big thanks to Marty, owner of the incredible http://www.syborgtwinturbo.com/ Big help in letting me use his wheel tool. Made it so easy to measure and check clearances.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/030109005-1.jpg
I did however notice my wheel wasnt perfectly centered in the wheel well, and that pisses me off, however I'll be able to adjust it once I get the bed permanently mounted I'll figure out just how much I'm off.

Cut out for the tubs, still looking for a spare set of factory tubs if anyone has any laying around. Basically I want to mimic the factory just 6" wider.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/030109006-1.jpg
One thing I hate is when people run big wheels, or such and the tires and wheel are soo tucked in leaving a huge gap between the bedside and tire, even though sometimes it requires that to fit way up top. I kept it tight, here you can kind of see the tire just touches that lip, well I plan to roll that edge so the wheel will be pretty close to the actual bedside. Laid out I still have a fingers gap up top against the bedside

Didn't want a HUGE lip, I like a big subtle lip, mainly because when you have a HUGE lip you tend to lose the design of the wheel.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/Wheels012-1.jpg
Front wheels have like 1/2" lip, but for my low ride height and altered suspension the camber isn't going to help me like normal to clear my fenders. I kind of wish I narrowed the track width but all is well

Little update... been working on it here and there, but trying to save my money so I can order the rest of my ART stuff.

Well you all know I've been waiting for a set of stock tubs, and well I got some and used about 4.5" of them haha, just so I could mimic the dimple the same. Then I added a filler and side piece and what I have is a "stock looking" tub widened 6"

Another thing I noticed, going to have change out the studs Moser used, or find a 3/16" nylock nut since on the McGaughys spindles, the upper bolt is now a stud, it's going to hit the wheel stud otherwise. You can see how close they are on the bottom

on this housing. Depo makes these corners, if anyone is wondering.

Because it was 6 lug and I needed 5 lug. Out back the axles, no one will make stock style shortened 14bsf axles. So for now these will work, however I plan to get a set of Superior stock replacement for 454ss rearend already 5 lug and have the resplined.

Not that difficult to learn. They have good tutorials. I've used it for the last 5 - 6 years, one of the easier 3D cad packages I've used. It's also a very powerful design package. If you start using it and have questions would be happy to answer or help you get the answers. I can also design or help you design in solidworks. I taught myself, but I've also been using Cad packages since 1985.

Great project! I love the work you have done on your project. Keep up the great posts!

Full lock at 2" ride height, not that it matters since I wouldn't be able to turn that much with fenders, but just goes to show I made them wide enough to allow adequate turning
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/10/firewall_tubs101809006-1.jpg

Started on the fenders, bought two brand new OEM fenders, and proceeded to drill the spot welds out and start cutting.

Test fit and marked for height

Cut and now to the special part, ordered two pre-99 inner fenders, going to try to make them work. They taper to quickly so they sit pretty high here, but I'm going to try to modify them. I actually have them installed opposite also, drivers on passenger. Worked better that way.

So after some pondering, I think I'm going to nix the OBS inner fenders... not completely sure yet. So I decided I'd go back and finish my exhaust tips. Come to find out I forgot to take into account the taper of the roll pan when I jigged up the tips and made them square to the pan not level with the ground. However it's not terrible, and too drastic so I should be able to live with it. However I need to re cut the openings in the roll pan, for now here are a few pics of them mocked up.

WS6
11-10-2009, 05:57 AM
OBS inner fenders?

I like the roll pan and tips. Having the tips not flush witht he roll pan could work in your favor by helping it stand out a little and not blend away. Or is it a different issue?

John Wright
11-10-2009, 06:16 AM
Scrap the tips and start over....LOL

I see what you mean about the tips not rolling around towards the outside of the truck like the roll pan does....to be honest, I bet nobody would ever know if you hadn't pointed it out. Maybe the roll pan will stretch out a bit on that side? I dunno metal work like you do so that might sound stupid and not even be feasible.

GMracer
11-10-2009, 06:21 AM
No they sit flush when they're mounted and the will fit the openings perfect, its just the flat part on the inside will be pitched down towards the back of the truck slightly. So you're right no one will notice, haha

Not much of an update, but figured I'd share. Found a water jet company 2 miles from my home so this is going to help this and future builds tremendously. I have about $170 worth of brackets being cut and will help get me to the next stage of my build... picking them up tomorrow stayed tuned for that.

As far as, have I been working on it? Well yes, but not much to take pictures, however I did finish up the exhaust tip openings, made them bigger and more symmetrical. All metal finished up. As far as the tips I decided on painting them, as well as the front bumper ducts with a chrome paint. This will allow me to do some needed bodywork, the back plate of the tip will be black to help hide the exhaust tubing opening. Stay tuned, I have one more week off from school and with work slow I may have a few "days off" so I can get some good progress.

As far as the rollpan, here are some pictures before I weld it in for good.

appears the house is for sale which means I need to find a place to put this thing, both parents will now NOT have a garage, and no room at the shop I built the chassis in. So until then I'm not sure what I'll be doing.

Sucks Nick. I hope you're able to put it somewhere safe and where you can work on it.

Sorry to hear of the troubles. I feel your pain. I had our Vette at my parents house since they had an extra space in their garage when we bought our current house that is short one garage. They just sold so I have the Vette in the garage at the house and the truck is without a garage. Not really a big deal since I will be selling the Vette shortly.

Now if someone just made custom chassis for our trucks. I would love my truck to look similar to the gale banks type R truck

That truck is a full tube chassis with some stock bodywork wrapped around it.

So it's been quite a while since I last posted, never mind updated this thread. February 21, 2010 the day I turned 22, my whole life has changed drastically, in many ways. Rather than bore you with my life story, the house I grew up in was sold I was left without much of a choice where to live, thankfully my brother is letting me stay with him, since I just graduated also, and gives me some time to save some money up for my own place, which will be in about 2 months time. I quit my fathers business of 11yrs, and started working in construction in the city for Avalon Bay Communities, technically in an assistant supers position. Loosing the house lead me to need to find a place to store the truck, which leads to my update I now rent a garage, with storage second floor which will be a hangout, crash pad, and storage area. The garage had a 2 post, 9000lb lift in it, certified and USA made, instead of the last guy (a friend of mine) having to dismantle it I gave him the money for it, to leave it. Even the small amount of work it'll see, it's worth it. If you've worked on a lift you know what I'm talking about. Amongst plenty of other things in my life taking a complete 180 on me, I'm getting ready to get back into the swing of things. After feeling like I finally hit rock bottom with some family issues, my life is headed in what I feel the right direction finally...

So for a quick update a few pictures of the garage, and yes cooks truck is on the lift, first things first is to finish his up.
