I have a 67 Buick GS400. I just bought a used set of Boyd Rallye wheels. All 4 are 18x8 with 4.5" bs with like new 225/40/18 tires. I got the complete setup for $450.
My question is I want to go bigger with the tires and sell the tires that came with the wheels. I found a good used set of 255/45/18 locally. I know the 255/40/18 will work, but will the taller 255/45/18 work?

The fronts at 8" with 4.5" will be where the problem is, with that tall and wide of a tire. Is your car lowered?

Car is not lowered yet, but plan to do the basic 1" that lowering springs will give me. I have test fit the 245/45/17 on the front before and they were fine.
I did just come across 245/40/18 full set that I may go to on all 4. That way I don't have to worry about the height.

255-45 is fine for the back but I think will be too tall for the front if you slam it. I would run a big / little combo on the tires. Muscle cars look funny with big wheels and tires the same size IMO
I will be running a 255-40 in mine with a 18 x 9 on the front but its taking 6.5" BS to work. Mine will be on the ground though. I am also running C6 front brakes. which changes the BS a little
