just curious...is there an accepted maximum backspace for a given width wheel? For example, would 6" of backspace be feasable for a 9.5" wide wheel?

I would contact your wheel manufacture that you want to use. Different companies will have different parameters.

I wouldn't contact year one because they have been wrong on everything else so far....

It does depend on the wheel manufacturer, and the type of wheel outer (read: standard lip or soft lip) On softlip outers, you have more room to push the wheel center further out towards the 'front' of the wheel.
You asked about a 9.5" wheel, which typically is a "standard rim" width, and in most cased a 6" backspace is not a problem.

I have 9.5" wheels in the front with 6.5" of backspacing. They are American Racing TT2s and they look fine. I think you can get 7" or possibly more on a 9.5" wheel.
