As for the trim, it's all coming off. The only reason the rear trim is off is because I removed it when I rolled the lips.

Thanks. Hearing all these good comments tells me I'm heading in the right direction!

Some pending items are: I have to remove the front wheel trim and rocker moldings; some areas on the body need to be repainted, including the hood of course, the front end needs to be aligned, the brakes needs to be bled again, and there are some parts I want powder coated. In the mean time I need to get my registration and insurance in place so I can do some road tests when it's ready. I'll post up more pictures as I progress.

That stance is right on what did you do?

The rear has air bags so it's an easy adjustment. In front however, I added/removed coil spring spacers until I got the height I was after.

Looking at the pictures I took from the rear, I think the back end could stand to come down a little bit more. It's hard to tell though because my driveway has an incline. Once I get it on level ground I'll be able to see it better.

Glad you like it!

I had the valve covers, mc cover, air cleaner lid & bottom, and breather tanks all powder coated to match the wheel centers:

Thanks! The throttle bracket is from Jeg's. I don't like the return springs mounted on the front so I cut that part off, relocated the anchor to the rear, and modified a small bolt (flatened sides w/ two holes drilled) to attach the springs to the throttle. It works good and I think it looks a lot better than having the springs poking out from under the front of the air cleaner.

Thanks dude! My plan is to bring this one to RTTH, however, there are still some things I need to do such as align the front end, bleed the brakes again (maybe one time more after that), get some decent seats ($$), and road test it (a lot). Oh yeah, I also need to get insurance and register it! I'm trying, I really am!

what size wheels

Wheels:
Front – 18 x 8.5 (5.2” back space)
Rear – 19 x 10 (5.5” back space)

Tires:
Front – 255/40-18
Rear – 295/35-19

Did you mini tub the car? I have a 67 GTO that I shoehorned 18x9.5 (traditional lip) wheels under the back and had to modifiy the outer wheelhouse to let the tires tuck up under all the way. I am thinking of mini tubbing the inner but you have to scallop the frame as well to get any additional clearance.

Also, how does that front do? Mine has 17x8 with 5" backspace and they run the fender at full lock when I back up. Strange, I know, but I just wondered if you had any issues.

04-30-2008, 01:57 PM
Hey gerarbanger....I am doing a mini tub kit out of a set of steel wheel tubs for the rear on my 65 Chevelle. You would be amazed how much room you get by tossing the old tubs. I don't have the exact number just yet since I am in the middle of it, but rough estimate with a tape from narrowest portion of the frame to the quarter is almost 13". I will let you know this week what the total depth will be once they are welded in. I am shooting for 20x10's in the back.

Not to hijack the thread.....Gorgeous Chevelle!!!

gearbanger
04-30-2008, 02:10 PM
You will be able to do the 20x 10's but it will be a backspacing game. I think the 65's have less room that the 66 and 67s do from what I have heard. Where I had the critical point was at the top front point ( if you are looking at the driver side tire it would be at about the 10 o'clock position) on each rear tire where the wheelwell lip starts to roll back down and in. That is where the most careful clearancing and measuring had to occur.

I have no rubbing issues in the back though. Only thing that rub in the back is if I have two people in the back and hit a hard bump, I can get driveshaft interference in the rearmost part of the driveshaft tunnel. My car is about as low as you can go though.

Yelcamino
04-30-2008, 04:18 PM
The '66 and '67 Chevelle/El Camino have a lot more room than the '64 and '65 body. The only thing I did to clear the rear wheels and tires on both cars was to trim and roll the lips on the outer fenders. With the proper backspacing there's plenty of room on both sides to fit a 10" wheel.

Simple black carpet and headliner to match the repro door panels. I plan to have a 6 point roll bar installed so I can run harnesses instead of standard seat belts. I'm also thinking real hard about losing the back seat because with a crossbar on the roll bar, pretty much all rear seat access will be lost.

It's been a while since I posted any updates on my Chevelle project. It's finally on the road, registration, insurance, and it even has personalized plates! :bananna2:

The Sparco seats are installed, the alignment is done (I plan to tweak it some more), I just put a Flaming River tilt column and Lecarra steering wheel in today. This coming Saturday I'm taking it to Tigman's shop in VA and he's going to install a 6 point roll bar and a few other things.

A couple of days ago I was out for a test drive and I stopped at the park to take some pictures and a little video for your enjoyment. Hopefully you like what you see and hear!

They're Billet Specialties "hose separators" and if the link works, there are a bunch of different sizes available through Summit...

Actually, I did trip but it was on the other video. I set up the camcorder on the tri-pod and started recording. As I was walking up to the car to start it I stepped on the edge of the pavement and slid off it to the dirt. Fortunately I was able to keep from falling.

Until I get the trans broke in I can't do any hard core stuff. I want to make sure everything is working properly. Don't worry, I'm itchin' to have some fun with this car!

Very nice! I had a '66 Chevelle 'vert in high school. Best of the Chevelles if you ask me!

On your front spoiler, have you thought about a rolled lip at the bottom, maybe 5/8" tall? I think it would finish it off great and strengthen it a bit as well.

Anyway, just a random thought... hope I didn't offend!

Hey Matt! I really want to, but I'm getting transferred in June and we'll be moving. Carol said she doesn't mind if I go but the deciding factor will be where we are in the moving process at the time of the Michigan event.

I've been fairly busy working on the Chevelle these last few weeks, mostly stuff that needs to be done but isn't photo worthy until now...

Since I moved the battery to the trunk, I had this big empty battery tray next to the radiator. Because I needed an expansion tank I decided to build one that would fit in place of the battery. It's probably bigger than it needs to be, but that's ok, a little extra coolant never hurts.

I started with two pieces of stainless bent to my dimensions. From there I tig'd it and painted it to match the valve covers. I'm an inexperienced tig welder, but I think it came out ok.

Well Herb, Looks like you are having fun. Good looking welds for a "beginner ?". When did you pick up the TIG? I've been buryed in the shop rebuilding the burned up 66. It's coming along nicely. Trying to make improvements in every area I have to redo. Customer is getting an extra 60/70 HP with the new fuel injection setup. Try to make the Michigan deal. Maybe we can make the drive up together. Move still looking like DC? Paint the cap flat black.

Mike, I've had the TIG for about a year, but I don't use it much. I'm trying to get myself to use it more often, but the MIG is so easy I tend to use it more.

We went with Accel's DFI. I looked at everybodys stuff at PRI and came away feeling it was the best for what we are after. It's on order and hopefully just days away. I want to install as much of it as I can before putting the frontend on the car. I really like the direction you are going with the Chevelle. I plan to take the Elky to Maxton next month for a few trial runs. Once I get in the license runs I will be held back to 135 plus the fudge factor. Until the cage goes in I cannot find out what it will topout at. Plan on a Maxton run sometime this year.

Sounds cool! I want to run the Chevelle at Maxton as well. Before I can go though, I'll have to get an actual racing bucket for the driver side as well as a 5 or 6 point harness. Those two items will open up higher speeds for me to reach for. :)

If you don't have one, get a current ECTA rulebook. You may be surprized at how close you already are to meeting the requirements. Unless you are expecting 175 plus?

In some of the threads I've been reading people have quoted safety sections from various sanctioning bodies, including ECTA, and they all seem to require 5 or 6 point harnesses. I have the Schroth ASM 4 points, but apparently they won't do. So I figure on the driver side, I can get one harness specifically for race situations and a one dedicated seat with holes for the 5th and 6th straps. Of course, before I spend any money, I'll have to get the rule book to make sure I get what's needed. And who knows, if I equip the car properly, maybe 175 won't be out of reach!

By all means get the book. I think you are already legal for running there. You may have to make some changes for a full out run, but you have to walk first. I'm legal for 135 without a roll bar and only a three point harness.

Hi Mark,

No saw yet. That will be something I pick up after we're done moving. Right now I need my money to keep the Chevelle moving along! :)

Before we move I'd like to make a run down to your shop with the Chevelle so you can adjust the spindle ducts to clear the sway bar. I'll call you about when I get closer to that point.

I’m not sure what happened, but I posted this yesterday and today it was gone. So here goes again.

I got the Chevelle up and running, all suspension bits are in place and the engine seems to be running well. With that in mind I took it out for a spin yesterday to get some price quotes on paint and interior. On 30 March it’s going in for the carpet and headliner and maybe a week or so after that I’ll take it in to get the hood and trunk painted.

Here’s how it looks now with the new Coil Spring Specialties 250 lb/in rear coils combined with the 1000 lb/in fronts. Even though it looks low, it actually rides pretty nice. It’s a bit rough over bad roads, but overall it works!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I also changed the rear exhaust tips. The ones I had on there before were bugging me so I changed them out for simple turn downs and then had both tail pipes and tips black ceramic coated.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Here’s the engine. The Fab Shop built the “tomb stone” around the air cleaner. I had it powder coated to match the valve covers. It seals to the hood too so it should only get cold outside air.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I also relocated the battery to the trunk...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I covered the interior floors with Fatmat all the way up to the rear window. There won’t be a rear seat so carpet will go all the way up too. I painted the roll bar a close match to the anthracite powder I have on other stuff. Right now it’s covered with blue tape to help prevent scratches while the carpet and headliner go in.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Now that I’m getting close to completion (at least the main stuff), I hope to get some seat time at an autox event or two before RTTH V! :drive:

Since I never drove it with the stock suspension, I can't say how much of a difference there is. However, I can (or will be able to) compare it with the El Camino's Global West suspension. The one thing I noticed immediately is the Chevelle has a smaller turning radius than the Elky. I've only driven it a couple of times and the turns haven't been very tight so I don't know how it will be yet. I hope it's going to be awesome! :)

There is a VERY nice salvage yard near Culpepper, VA called Leon's. They have a bunch of old stuff, and thus might have the parts you need. I will probably be going there in the next week or so if you'd like me to look for you.

Are you referring to the plastic trim pieces? I should have been more clear, apparently there are metal strips that screw on to the edge at the top of the windshield and the back glass which the plastic trim pieces clip on. I've been checking the resto places online (Year One, NPD, etc) and it's looking like the parts I need aren't reproduced.

Thanks Mike. Overall I'm happy with the interior though the floor mats the shop made were pretty shabby IMO. The mats that are in there now came from Carol's GLK 350, amazingly they fit perfect!

It would be nice if ECTA approved my bar/seat/harness system. I'd really like to see what the top end on this thing is!

June won't work for me. I have to be at my new duty station on 12 June and we still haven't sold our current house. Until that's sold we really can't do anything. It never fails, whenever we need to sell a house, the market takes a dump!

I'm sure the house will go soon. On the ECTA, just go to tech and act fat, dumb and happy. Your setup is done real close to 100 percent right. Hopefully they will allow you to do both your 125 and 150 licensing runs. 150 and above is where the 5 point rule is strict. They basically told me they knew my car was gonna go 175 so I had to meet that requirement before running again. They are very fair and only want to be sure all the drivers are safe.

I got another update for you. I ordered an oil cooler from Performance Rod & Custom (http://www.prchotrod.com/index.html) and it arrived today. It's a lot bigger than it looks in their web catalog but it is a seriously nice piece...

I think I'm going to mount it behind the driver side headlights. There seems to be plenty of room and it looks like it will be able to get cooler air; and most importantly, it will be protected.

Cool setup with the radiator. Did you just drill holes and bolt it directly to the radiator support? I'm staring at a similar setup for my car right now. And trying to figure out how this is a "stock replacement" radiator.

Wish I could say that about all my purchases. :^(

My top speed was 161.3 mph. The tech inspector didn't like my FIA rated Sparco racing seat so I was limited to 150; obviously I went a little over. I've since changed out the Sparco for an aluminum Kirky seat which will satisfy ECTA's safety requirements. My goal in April is 175 mph.

Sorry to thread jack.. but you've been to Maxton, and look like an expert...

I want to do the Hot Rod Magazine Maxton Mile competition in the spring and I've got a few questions...

1) I bought a Snell SA2005 helmet - that should get me thru tech, right?

2) My C6 Vette is mostly stock - intake/exhaust/Z06 brakes and wheels - This should put me in the 135 mile class?

3) Anything else safety needed to run this event?

Also - dumb question, but where do you stay? Its a few hrs from Charlotte and will probably crash at at Hotel for the night.

1. To make sure you have the right equipment, I highly recommend you get a rule book.

Until you get one, I'll try to answre your questions using my 2009 rule book.

From the 2009 rule book:

3.A.2. Driver’s Helmet

All drivers/riders must wear a full-face helmet with face shield. A Snell Foundation tag reading SA2000 or M2000 or later is required. No open face helmets will be allowed. Helmets will be visually inspected at least once each year. Helmets shall be undamaged and in serviceable condition. Eyeglasses worn under the helmet must be shatterproof. Snell Foundation 2005 certification will be required on all helmets beginning in Jan. 1, 2011. Manufacture date not to exceed 5 years. All enclosed cockpit car and motorcycle streamliners, require SA rated helmets.

2. Again, the rule book is your best friend. My understanding is an all stock car with stock factory installed safety equipment can be tech'd up to 135 mph. Looking through the rule book, each section, i.e., Tires, Wheels, Roll Bars, etc. has specific requirements for each speed class.

3. From the 2009 rule book:

3.A. Driver's Clothing

All drivers, 135 mph and over or all open cockpit vehicles, must wear a driver's suit, gloves, head sock or helmet skirt, and boots. Protective underwear ishighly recommended. All items shall be in clean and serviceable condition. It is advisable not to wear synthetic clothing material under the driver's suit. All driver's suits must be SFI certified and have the SFI rating tag attached.

In my own words:

After reading the various speed classes, for closed cars under 135 mph a driver suit (SFI 3.2A/1), boots (SFI 3.3/5), gloves (SFI 3.3/5), and a head sock (SFI 3.3) are recommended. I think the key word there is recommended. I would take that to mean not required as long as you keep it under 135 mph.

Lastly, there are two hotels not far from the track. The one I stayed at last time was the Pine Acres Lodge (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GGLL_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=pine+acres+lodge+maxton+nc&fb=1&gl=us&hq=pine+acres+lodge&hnear=maxton+nc&cid=8943230810299473026) , which is a little south west of the air port where the meet takes place.

Hopefully this info is helpful and sorry for taking so long to respond!

After banging, bending and scratching my spoiler, I finally got a new one. This one is an improvement over the last in that it's a lot easier to take on and off, it has a center mounted intake for the brake cooling ducts, and it has a splitter. It's still bare aluminum, debating on leaving it that way or painting it. What do you think?

I keep thinking it would look better if it was painted... Maybe the vertical areas painted blue and the splitter portion painted a darker color to better tie in with the hood.

It's definitely a personal preference. I'm sure it would look just as good either way.

I'll probably paint the vertical surface gunmetal like the previous spoiler and the splitter matte black.

Thanks for the compliments, I'm pretty happy with it! Oh, and one more thing, since I like to go to Maxton for LSR, this spoiler is quickly removed and a different one can be attached that sits approximately 1.75" off the deck! I'll put it on and post a pic.

Well first of all, I have to give credit where credit is due. A little chassis shop near me called Piper Motorsports built the spoiler using my drawings. The frame for the grill is a piece of stainless sheet metal that was cut to fit. The screen is also stainless but everything else is aluminum.

AWESOME selection on the wheels Herb! That's the same wheel I'm going with also. Frank is suggesting I go with the "brushed" lips with the Matte/Satin Black centers.

The RT-615K is an awesome tire! I just wish they'd make a 335-345 series tire... They stop at the 315 series! I'd have a front tire but no size to fit the rear. That should be the PERFECT tire for you for the P-T functions!

I can't wait to see them on your car! :twothumbs:

Your spoiler has given me so many ideas for mine, I would love a better picture of the flange on the bumper. Mine is a grill blockoff also so it will be a little different design but alot of it will still apply but your design is very thought out. Here is a picture of the begining of mine it is mounted to the grill support connected to the core support and will have a frame behind it to stiffen the whole thing up. My radiator is rear mounted so there isnt a need for airflow.

I'm working on the car today so I'll take some more pictures of the flange for you. The nice thing about this design is once it's all bolted together, it creates a box and doesn't need any other supports.

It's kinda hard to see in the pictures I posted, but there are two block off plates for the rectangular openings in the bumper. I'll use racer's tape to cover up the grille, the engine runs cool regardless.

Hey Chris, like I said to Matt above, I had a hard time finding the right front/rear sizes in a 200 treadwear; the RT-615K had what I wanted. I went with 255/40-18 and 295/40-18. The SP3Ps and BFGs will go on the El Camino. :)

I finally got around to taking the RR spoiler to the powder coat shop on Monday and it's on the car with some color. The vertical portion I tried to match up to the gunmetal on the other parts and the splitter is matte black. You may notice the splitter is smaller than when I first got it. The problem was I kept kicking it and tripping over it in my garage. Besides, I didn't like how far it stuck out on the ends, so I ended up trimming it down some.

Sorry about not getting a better pic of the flange, I completely forgot about it! It's fairly simple, there's a flat piece that bolts to the bottom of the bumper and then a vertical piece was welded to it. Then threadserts were put in the veritical part for the spoiler to bolt to. The spoiler also wraps around the back about an inch on both sides.
