Your in TX, so you will get a chance to preview the stuff if you want.
The sad part is that I doubt any of the money raised from the auction will get back to the people waiting on cars to be built.
I wonder if a customer dropped off a car to be customized/restored and then a month later Unique get raided, if that customer gets his car back. I would think yes, but since they were cutting and pasting VIN tags I wonder what lengths the person would have to go to prove that is their car. Registration and before photos? Or does the bank just step in and seize everything and everyone is S.O.L. ?

I'd like to see what some of the stuff goes for.

I so wish I could get on a plane right now.....
Me want that 69 Vert with the 572!!!!!!!
Don't see the bike that OCC did for them up there. Actually one of my favorite OCC bikes.
OK, so I called the auctioneer and you need to make a 25% (of what you plan to spend) deposit before you will be able to bid. Bidding will last until next Thursday and will close 2 lots per minute.
Good news is we will be able to see the current bids without registering and can jump in anytime so long as they receive the deposit.....
Better then BJ IMHO!!!
Hmbre97
03-21-2008, 11:12 AM
Do you get your deposit back if you don't win anything?
rob07002
03-21-2008, 11:34 AM
I'm sure you do. The reason for the deposit is so you have some skin in the game and you don't puff up auctions or bid on stuff you can't afford.
ie, if you can spend up to $10k they require a $2500 deposit. If your bidding on items worth over the 10, you would need to increase the dep. this way if you win and don't come up with the cash and they have to reauction the item they keep your depo...
Makes sense

If I had the title to my car and some guy from the bank told me that due to some crazy technicality I was S.O.L......I don't think I should share what would happen next. Because it's not good, brother....it's not good at all.

Some of the shells still have VINs... but most don't... If they were playing fast and loose there might not be any way of establishing a VIN for a shell, correct?
If so, are the shells only viable as a replacement shell for an existing vehicle or does anyone know how you would go about getting a VIN reissued?

I was so close to registering and bidding on a Camaro shell. Then I started figuring the cost for me to fly down, Rent U-Haul, Gas, Food, Hotel. Well I came up with almost $1500. and did not even have the camaro price included in that. Wish it was up north. Looks like a lot of usable Camaro shells.

Just woundering if anyone in the area of the storage of the shells would be able to pick up 1 or 2 and hold them until I can get either down there to pick them up or get shipping set up? I would cover your time and cost to pick it or them up? There's just no way I can get them out in the time that they state on their web site. PM and let me know.

I remember seeing the show (was it Rides???) on TV where they built the Camaro and Foose showed up. It's amazing what mismanagement will do. Gives "chop shop" a new meaning. We all know what the TV shows have done to the little hole-in-the-wall shops. They grow 10-fold. These gys got too big too quick. If it was all legit, the feds would'a never raided the place.
I'm 6 hours from that place. Too bad the family and I have plans for next weekend. It'd sure be nice to store a load for someone, but it's not doable. If it was in 2 weeks that'd be different.
I'm surprised as well. For the rows and rows of gutted shells, there aren't many engines, trannies or full suspension units laying around and most of the equipment looks low-budget. Were they planning a scam from the begenning???
Looks like someone charged a lot of people big deposits on cars that were never intended to be worked on.
Too bad for the ones that lost money.

I can't get these Camaro bodies out of my head!! Anyone have any idea what it would take to get a title for one of these shells? I think they are selling them with bill of sale only. Is the auction an online auction only or can you stop locally and look at the stuff?

03-23-2008, 04:36 PM
Getting a title depends on your state regs.
I purchased a Camaro shell a while back. The DMV office said it had been unregistered for over 20 years, so they produced a title for me w/o any hassles. I gave them the original owner's name, and since that's all the info they asked, it was no big deal.
For another car I had, (that I got from a friend-of-a-friend) I sent the owner 2 certified letters asking to transfer ownership. The letters were sent back to me as "rejected", so a title was produced for that one as well. If the letters would have been accepted and the owner didn't want to help (or want the car back) I would have been screwed. Then that's where a worthless shell and a good title comes in handy.
I remember on the Rides show where they were working on a Mustang. The commentator stated that the cars come w/Shelby VINs. Then there was a segment showing a new VIN tag was installed into a new (newly painted) shell. Looks like that was real proof of tag tampering.
It seems that having a legal bill of sale should help in retitling the car, unless it relates to only getting a salvage title.
On the same subject. How are the new Dynacorn bodies titled???

doubt that, the majority of the people that know about it are in the hot rod industry, and most of them understand how much of a paint it would be to title one of those cars and what not...the auction also does not make it very easy to pick things up, you have two days to pick things up, and for somebody out of state, thats not too easy to do, hopefully the bidding will stay low...wouldnt mind a nice new mercedes cl55 or H2...

The auction site says you will have to apply for a new VIN. Not sure if this is referring to the VIN or the title but if it is referring to the VIN these cars will not be worth as much with a reissued VIN. Here is what it says:
Title Information: The partially-completed vehicles will be sold “as is, where is, without warranties.” All sales shall be free and clear of all liens and claims against these assets. The Trustees have Original Title Certificates issued to Unique Motorcars, Inc. as to some of the vehicles; however they have been informed that the State of Texas has cancelled titles. Only a Bill of Sale will be provided upon sale. Buyers will have to apply for the reissuance of a VIN from the State of Texas. Buyer can obtain a certified copy of the Bankruptcy Court’s order at its own expense.
I also wonder about the condition of these shells. It looks like they might have been sitting uncovered in the rain for sometime, at least since they were hauled off by the Farmer's Branch police. I'm going to take a look tomorrow.

I agree Frank, they will most likely bring big bucks and the chances of getting a bargain deal on one is probably not realistic. This is how I sold the I idea of registering for the auction to my wife (slim chances of actually winning one.)!
Everyone likes to get a bargain, and as unlikely as it may be in this situation (I called the auction house and they can't even keep up with the phones so many people are calling)...I can at least dream! :Alchy:

LOL! I actually talked to someone that was going to STEP RIGHT UP for the ram jet 572 convertible and throw a Hale Mary Bid of $12K, ROFLMAO! He said he might step up to $12,500 at the last second if he has to be sure he gets it! Talked to some other guys willing to pay upwards or $2500 for the shells! WOW! LOL! The way the bidding is set up if a last minute snipe bid comes in, the auction is extended, this could go on for weeks!

People will get caught up in the moment and will bid to win. Nobody likes to loose. I have seen people on ebay over pay all the time.
Some of the shells have the VIN tag on the firewall and others don't have the firewall shown in the pic. Who knows if the VIN tag is still attached to the car. How would you even get another VIN tag if it's missing?
Gandalf
03-24-2008, 02:14 PM
LOL indeed. I used to have such fantasies of making the hell-deal but those days are gone. As you said - people will be shocked at what this stuff will go for. I actually have someone who lives less than 10miles from the location (of the shells) with a big (personal) shop and truck/trailer so it kills me to know that these things will go for more than I can afford right now, otherwise I'd be set. I figured on bidding on some of the smaller stuff as well as one or two of those cars but then I got to figuring what if I win the small stuff and not one of the cars - what am I going to do then? End up with those nice orange fenders but not the orange '69 to go with them? And drive out for some fenders? lol.
And while we are on a reality-check....those who have not priced shipping a non-rolling shell (body dolly dosn't count) - it is not the same as shipping a working, running, braking vehicle. Check into it first before comitting a bid.
And yes, I too would love the 572 convertable but I know I'm not the only one so I'll probably not bother. Even at the $20k I could afford, I know it's going to go for WAY more than that. Don't get me wrong here - I'm happy to be wrong and wish everyone the very best of luck but Frank makes a very valid point. For those local to the event that are always saying "you West Coast guys always get the good cars"....well, I guess this is one of those times when you get your own back :)

I talked to them. As someone else mentioned you cannot even get through today. Tommorrow is visitation day, I have a friend that will be there, it will be interesting to see if there is 10 or 100 people there.
If your thinking about buying a shell, just to get your head right. I have a Dynacorn body on the way for a customer project, with no VIN. My to the door cost is $14,200! So what does that make these shells worth? It will depend on the quality of the sheetmetal / sheetmetal work, but sufice it to say there probably will not be any $2000 clean shells.

I talked to them today. I had a couple questions about the Hummer. He went out and looked at it and called me right back.
I sent in a letter from my bank stating that they would support bidding up to XXX. It mentiones it briefly in the deposit section. That way I didn't have to send a cashier check and they worry about how to get it back if I didn't buy anything. I emailed a scanned copy of the letter, and got a quick response from them stating they would inform me of my bidder number as soon as they get the letter tomorrow.
They have been very responsive and stand-up with me.

I didn't get too detailed. I wanted to make sure it ran, what the mileage was, and asked if they had the title. Unfortunately, they updated the post with that info, and the bidding has jumped substantially. I've never understood people who go crazy bidding at the beginning of an auction.

Well, sometimes you can deal a knockout punch early. When I was buying and selling a lot of cars at Auction I would sometimes just go straight to what I was willing to pay to scare away the others. The auctioneer might start it at $12K and I was willing to pay $21K, so I would walk over the the auctioneer, interupt him and jump it straight to $21K. Then watch the others walk away shaking their head. Worked sometimes, did not other times. but I promise you the other guy paid up for it if they jumped in,LOL!
Also, important to know in this auction, if you jump in late, they just continue to exteend the auction. So scaring away may not be a bad plan!

Sad thing about this type of thing is the tool boxes were prob bought and paid for by employees of the company and being it was a seizure of assets their SOL.....Its not their fault the managment was crooked... I wonder what happened to the blown vert?
My bad...I just read the auction. This guy is selling the location of these cars for $6.99...Dam I need to pay more attention.

This is insane. Pipe dream probably. Trying to get my brother to fly out and rent a flatbed by Friday.
I wonder how much all those shells will go for.
On another note, does anyone know what kind of wheels are on that 572 Camaro Conv?
Someone must have cut a deal on the nice roller mustangs and they ended the auctions.
Maybe worth a shot on that 572 vert.

Relax, they won't see a dime. This money goes to the creditors that they also screwed, not them.

Does anyone know it they have any of the rear suspension kits or any parts for a camaro with the inverted shocks. I looked though the auction listing and could not find any complete or even any parts for the suspensions. I liked the design and the look and would love to get it for cheap.

For what looks to be an almost complete non running car, I think this is still priced low at $3250.00

The body cart rear wheels broke off under that shell and the tail dropped on the ground. I didn't look to see how badly it was damaged.

WOW, that vert with the 572 is at $35.5k! That's strong money for what it is. Even if you value the 572 at 15, that over 20 for the rest of it.
Incredible

I suspect next weeks conversations will dominated by how much the cars brought!
Yes, I believe the tides are turning - will be very interesting to see where things end with 5hrs to go in the auction.

That is real cheap. lets analize this
Body painted, mini tubbed, smooth firewal, DSE roll bar, (even if it needs scuffed and shot), there is $20K to $25K in body alone
Motor I think more like $18k, but we can call it $15K
Transmission set up $5000
Rear / rear suspension $4000
Chris Alston Front $5000
Wheels / tires $4000
Cloth top $2000
There is $60K righ there ans that is no including any labor except what was done to the body! Does it have brakes? Add a few grand, does it have wiring done? Add a couple grand
I predict that car breaks $50K, and is a steal at anything less then that.

Keep in mind that none of these have valid titles -- they're all going to have State of Texas issued VINs.. for the number-matching folks, the value goes to hell with that.

It looked like some had VINs and some didn't. Hard to believe they are selling cars that have VINs w/o titles? Its strange that the feds would let the shells without *valid* VINs back into the public at all....

All the rough shells had VIN tags. Most of the cars that were in process or nearly complete had no VIN tags. It seems they removed the VIN tags when they started work on a shell. There was a couple of in process cars that still had VIN tags.

No, the notes on the auction page specified that the state had cancelled ALL the titles and they would ALL have Texas-issued VINs.
The Trustees have Original Title Certificates issued to Unique Motorcars, Inc. as to some of the vehicles; however they have been informed that the State of Texas has cancelled titles. Only a Bill of Sale will be provided upon sale. Buyers will have to apply for the reissuance of a VIN from the State of Texas
Or perhaps I'm misreading and only the cars they have title to have had their titles cancelled?

The car I posted had a VIN listed and said nothing about no title or title canciled like the others. Thats what I thought made it a steal,I have seen Ebay Fastbacks that I would have to be paid to drag off bring this much!!!!
Keep an eye out most of this stuff will be on Ebay in a week or so.....

I think they meant the titles were cancelled. They also added a note stating that the cars with VINs had the VIN inspection waived which I think means that it was determined the VINs were valid. I need to stop thinking about this, too many great deals got away...

Well, if you makes you feel better I shot my own foot off and did not register either because I figured it would get stupid. And then Thursday I was scrambling to register and they would not allow it on the last day. the title situation is ugly, but you have to assume your buying them for shell value like a Dynacorn.

Just guessing about the black 'vert, but seeing how it was a "court order," wouldn't it make sense that their was a "owner" of that vehicle (i.e. a customer that put down partial or even full payment) and they went after the court order? Still just guessing, but seeing how it was the closest to being "done" my bet is a customer had a lot of money tied up in it. :dunno:
Definetly interested in hearing the real scoop if anyone has it.
