      Metal Spinning

Metal spinning - Is it difficult to do. Has anyone here ever done it. I've got some ideas for various "parts" but this is really wild to watch. Check out this video.

I had some ideas for some parts a while back. I never got around to looking into the cost.

This place is just down the street from where I work. I need to go visit them. If nothing else, just to be nosy.

The parts I designed at a previous employer were spun aluminum. I dealt with Gem City Metal Spinning in Dayton. At the time they primarily spun metal by hand but were slowly converting over to CNC spinning. The biggest cost are the spinning dies usually machined from a hunk of steel. IIRC it was around 2-3K for a die about 24"L X 15" diameter. That was about 4 years ago. Doing it by hand takes a lot of skill to work the metal and maintain a constant material thickness. Gem City was having trouble with finding people who would hand spin which forced them to go CNC.

      company

I worked for a metal spinning company up here in vancouver. The owner was a master at spinning and making the dies. From what I remember he really did not charge that much for dies.
