My 68 camaro is mini tubbed. I will be getting 17x11 wheels for the rear. Im going to narrow the rear end. Whats the typical backspacing people go with when doing this? Should I narrow the rear end first then get the wheels to fit? Or get the wheels in the backspacing I want and then get the rear end narrowed? I want the biggest outer lip possible.

Thanks
Jesse

I think you need to narrow the rear end first. Order up new axles. Then measure the back spacing for the rims.

When i do custom wheels and narrowed rears, i get the wheels first and then do the rear.

:drive: I just got a narrowed g-bar ready rear from Frank. Then I ordered the wheels from him. That would be my suggestion for a perfect fit!

Jessie, there is a bit more to the math. What suspension are you running? What wheels? What tires?

A good start is a 55' rear and a 5.5" backspace on a 11" wheel. If you want more lip, lower the backspace and narrow the rear that much more, but around 54" width you start to have a problem with Leaf spring perches sitting on the bearing housing.

The rear suspension set up is mini tubbed, dse leaf springs and shock brackets. 17x11 ccw wheel with a 315/35/17. I was guessing somewhere around 5.5 backspace. Should i get the wheels in that backspace then?

Ok, I think I see my difference. Is he using drum or disk brakes?
My calculations (69Camaro) including any brake material were:
54" mounting to mounting surface - rear axle
4 1/2" B.S. on 11" rim
Looking at about a 12 1/2" wide tire (don't know tread width)
with 3/4" gap on either side of the 14" wide wheel well.

I seem to be 3/8" wider per side, is that partially due to 1/4 inch per
side cause of disk brakes or am I really off. I measured twice
already and wanted to go with a deeper look on the wheels.
I guess I'll measure again, but all cars are different, could they
really be 3/8 different per side (3/4 total)?

Sure, a bit more than that as far as 68 compared to a 69. Always measure the actual car to be absolutly sure.
