Ok so its show and tell time.i dont know about anybody else but im always interested in seeing other fabricators skills and techniques. so ill go first.

wouldn't want to put mine up after yours. You did a nice job there. I always have the problem with the bars springing after I bend them, so they arn't bent far enough or too much. Seems like I can never make them look perfect.

wouldn't want to put mine up after yours. You did a nice job there. I always have the problem with the bars springing after I bend them, so they arn't bent far enough or too much. Seems like I can never make them look perfect.

i think it depends on what kind of bender you have but i aways go 2 to 3 degrees more then i need to. all tubing has some spring back 4130 seems to have more the DOM mild steel but i guess you will get a feel for it the more ya do it.

I think its a J squared bender, but I can't remember now. I'd like to see if they make a hydraulic attachment for it. Its my fathers so I'm just learning on some scrap right now.

How do yall cage guys weld on top of the two back bars coming from the main hoop?

Yes JD squared makes a hydraulic attachment. Thats the bender I have, it works great with the attachment.
As for welding the tops of the cages it all depends on the car, sometimes you drop it threw the floor sometimes you have to grin and bear it and do it the hard way and squeez your head and tig torch into very tight places. thats the only part of cage building that i hate.

I usualy arrange the fabrication so that I can tack the cage together in the car and before I weld the down tubes to the floor, I cut a holes in the floor and drop the whole cage down and weld the tops. It takes a little more planning, but it makes the structure that much stronger.

that sounds like the best way, I've heard a couple people say that. I didn't plan when I did mine. I ended up getting the top the best I could. I think theres just a tiny spot at the very top. I may try to get the stick welder to it to fill it in. It was tig welded everywhere else tho

Nick is an incredible fabricator beyond just cages.There are certain fabricators that you deal with that can bring more than what you were looking for to the table Nicks one of them.Tom Nelson

did the back 1/2 and 4 link on the FJ and did it all on the 113" wheelbase Samurai.(yes i said 113")

"street car" cage- tucked up to the headliner and a pillar as close as possible. Rolled bends follow the countours/shape of the roof. Besides aesthetics, the cage is tucked up out of the way. Same with the B pillar,,, you will hit your head on the rear side window first (getting in) before hitting the cage... Tig welded with a flat back cap on the torch handle

So you would Use a flat back cap on the torch handle to get into the Tight radius corners between the B Pillar and main hoop.

It was a Question Intended.... I believe i figured it out.. you would use a Mirco Tig torch to get into the Tight spots, and correct me if i'm wrong. Other than using a Smaller tig torch. is there a certain technique that you would use to weld up a cage that it pretty much tucked away?

One technique is to build the hoop and bars and tack them together without welding them to the floor/chassis. Then cut holes in the floor for the base to drop through and weld the top. Then raise the assembly back into position and final weld to the floor and close the floor holes.

Depending on the layout and if you are thoughtful. Sometimes you can rock the roof hoop forward or backward after tacking, weld all the way around, then rock it back into place and weld in the supports.
