Who sells "thick" ring gears so that you can run a 3 series gear ratio on a 2 series carrier.
I want to run 3.55 or 3.73 on a 2 series posi? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
derekf

Summit's got some, or Mr. Gasket makes a spacer so you can use a regular 3 series gearset.

DO NOT USE a ring gear spacer in a performance application.
Not to mention... that the only way you will be able to do this with any GM differential (with the exception of the 7.5") is to use a ring gear spacer... or to change out the complete differential carrier, meaning, posi - limited slip - torque sensing - locker... etc etc.
It is most likely best that you cahnge out the differential for a new unit not only for the correct flange offset but to a stronger unit as well. Depending on the differential you have... the land speed racers are always looking for 2 series carriers/posi's... so you can sell what you have to re-coupe monies for what you really need.
But... To answer your question correctly, the first time around... which differential and which POSI are you refering to ??

It is a 8.2" Eaton posi out of a 1968 Nova w/ 2.73 gears.
I have read the spacers are not a good idea. But I have been unable to locate a place selling "thick" gear for the for this 2 series carrier.
Thanks.

Summit's got one set of gears - 3.73s, if memory serves, that fit a 2 series 8.2 carrier.

I called Summit and Randy's Ring and Pinion, neither carried a Thick gear for the 8.2" GM rear end.
From talking to the tech line, for my application, a spacer would not be too bad. Street driven car, flashlight drags once or twice a year and less than 400 HP.
If anyone knows of a vendor, please let me now. Could you weld the spacer to the ring gear?
Thanks,

This looks to be a thick gear for the 8.2:

Yes it does. Thanks for the link. I might have thought the Tech line could have found this.

That is because what you are looking at is a type-o. USGear/Strange does not make series swap gear sets for the 8.2". Never have... never will.
So, in short... they are not available through any manufacturer/vendor... unless you have them made. You got 8k laying around ??
And no, you can not (should not) weld a spacer to the ring gear. Nor would I recommend that you beat on them at the street/flashlight races. If the chassis never hooked up and you didnt pound the trans... they will live... but its a gamble either way.

Chicane67,
I am certainly a novice in this area. But the gears derekf posted the link to say they are for a series 2 carrier. Why would these not work?
And, if I had $8k laying around, I would not be asking these questions to work with my next to nothing budget.
Thanks for the input.

Because it is a type-o. What Summit is advertising... does not exist. They do not make a two series, 3.73 gear set.
They have never produced a two series 3.73 gear set... and they never will.
