i'm in a delimma on the rear backspacing needed on my 69 mustang.

i'm going with either a 17 or 18 x9.5" with 275-40 tires & will be lowering the car later (about 2"). the best figure i can come up with measuring off the original 14x5" wheel is 5.75". the wheels i'm looking at are available in half sizes only ( i don't understand, they advertise "custom made to your specs" but won't do 1/4" increments?) i'm running stock width rear w/ leaf springs & can't decide if i want to go with the 5.5" & move it out with the chance of fender lip clearance issues or go in with the 6". anybody here running this combo on a lowered car? i know 1/4" is small, but i'm pretty anal about my wheel & tire fitment on my vehicles. thanks!

I'd go with the 6" backspacing ... it's always easier to move the wheel out slightly than in!! LOL

FWIW I have 9" wheels with 245/45/18 on the rear of my 68 Cougar, with 5.5" backspace ... and it is tight to the fender lip, car is lowered about 1-1/2". There is more room to go in, I'll probably end up changing wheels.

Also take a look at Dodgestang's wheel & tire chart for Mustangs:

i finally took time tonight to fab up a wheel fitment tool to double check everything. i have three vehicles that will need wheels soon, so it will come in handy. nice cougar ! i gave a friend a 5.0 /aod setup for his 68 a while back & had a 67 sold out from under me before i bought this mustang.
