270 is a decent price, I paid over 300 for mine at a Chevy dealership.

Superior Chevrolet has them for $267.19. I know it's only $2.81 savings. Back in the day, they use to offer Powder Coating on them. Not sure they do that anymore. I'm thinking Jegs or Summit are going to be the best deals. Will the short Valve Covers fit over Roller Rockers?

Those are GMHPP - and everyone basically sells them at cost... there is no better deal.

Really? lol, well looks like I'm getting them from Jegs because they offer FREE shipping. So basically the $2.81 savings on the top price would just kill me over in the end with shipping, huh?

Do you have pics of these on your cars or know of anyone who does? I'd like to see them on a car before I click that "buy now" button. lol Thanks BTW!!!

Manley Street-Flo forged steel valves intake,1.600''exhaust, 11/32''x7 hardened steel locks.
Hardened steel guideplates.
Hardend Pushrods

$270 is crack. But then again... they are the scripted covers. I got my tall covers (which are the same), without the script, for $96.00 ea. at the local Pontiac dealership.

...but that was when AL was a lot cheaper. I bought a set when they where 105 each. Go with the tall set dude.

Ok if go with the tall set, how hard is it to drill those holes for the PCV line?

tumper93
10-24-2007, 06:25 AM
Not hard considering they are just aluminum.

I took mine to the local race car builder and had him drill them. I was to nervous and wanted to make sure the holes were straight.

Those are great looking vc. I saw a set at a swap meet and the guy wanted $250 for them. I don't think you will ever find a 'deal' on them.

Yeha, I know. I've been looking left and right for them!

if you buy those, or the tall ones without the breather hole.... get a can or spraybomb of glyptal and coat the inside before you use them. Some of these sweat oil and it's a PITA to get it all out again and coat the inside afterwards.

I've seen them on ebay from time to time, sometimes for little money. I paid almost 500$ for mine (including shipping and the tax nazis here) some 6 years or so ago. They are very nice covers, unfortunatly mine didn't fit. Still looking for a great deal on some low style ones

For my 310cid build, I used the B&B Performance, 3 x 1.375" Valve Cover Breather Tube's... (which I also got from CV Products) and two 62-1440 K&N slip on filters. We actually chucked the covers into a Bridgeport and used a Unit-Bit to cut the holes. Post that and after clearancing them for the Jesel shaft rocker system, I set the height and then welded them in from the back side.

I'm running that same set (short) on my 69 Camaro. First off, the quality isn't what I expected for the price. I’d rate it as fair at best. As far as fit, I use Comp Cams roller rockers and these covers have a thick aluminum baffle under the hole that prevents you from bolting the cover on properly. I used thick valve cover gaskets, double gaskets and considered, but didn't use the aftermarket valve cover spacers/adapters. Anyway, the baffle looks like a box with the sides missing so I just removed it so it would work without hitting. Mine are the wide body rockers so the narrower type might work without contact. Some tailoring might work too but I just cut them out. They now fit fine with zero leaks around the gasket to head area. I had to swap several PCV and breather setups until I got a setup that didn't leak a lot. The drivers side breather still leaks (call it a weep) on long trips no matter what I try. To minimize the leak, I finally figured out that I need to put in a new (and tight) grommet every 3-4 months and make sure the breather/PCV is positioned as high (up) as possible and that it fits tightly (good grommet). If it goes down in the hole, it opens a leak path. I also put a cheap Fram fuel filter between the PCV and intake fitting to keep the oil out of the manifold and off the plugs. Without the baffle (and with the PCV and breather stuffed with oil resistant foam), it pulled small amounts of oil into the manifold. I painted the filter black and it tucks in behind the carb and is pretty much invisible to the casual observer. I have a Jegs setup that is supposed to do the same thing but I'm lazy and haven't installed it yet. I'll probably go to the breather system that was in one of the car magazines this month. Ditto on using Glyptal because one valve cover did sweat oil from around the script lettering area after a few months. They are hard to keep clean in the natural finish. When they are on the car, I use paper towels and a toothbrush with Brakecleen first and follow up with alcohol (be careful). Off the car use an acid based Mag Wheel cleaner to get them back to natural aluminum color. In my opinion, they look great (when clean) and are worth the trouble. I'm putting the same set on my 67 Camaro and Jegs/Summit are the cheapest I've found when you factor in shipping. Hope my pain helps avoid some on your end.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I'm thinking twice now. Might have to go with some fabbed up ones instead.

Huh... the tall non-script dont have baffles at all... nor have I had any issues with them sweating oil. Must be from them being so thin from the machine work in the script.

Twin_Turbo
10-29-2007, 12:43 AM
There's no machine work on the script, the raised letters are just sanded down. the castings are porous, not on all but some. IMO coating them to prevent it is better than finding out later if they sweat or not.

The tall ones indeed don't have baffles.

I have them on my car and also have Jessel shaft mounted rockers w/ no clearance problems.

Hey morgan, what did you use to polish the letters back to show up. Just curious.

Twin_Turbo

I coated mine black and sanded off the letters, then I painted the bowtie red.

I had the powder coating shop mask off the bowtie and the letters so that they were never covered w/ powdercoat in the first place.

The non script covers are a die of their own... and they are not sanded down script covers.

I am guessing that they changed the way they do the script covers from how they did it when they first were available to the open market... as they used to be machined from the non script covers (these were created for the late 80's Trans Am engine builders and they normally cut their logo or team names into the extra material). They used to have extra material in the cover just for that operation. But... from looking at the scripted covers in this thread... it looks like they placed the script on top of the added material of the non script version. The pictures show alone show that...

None the less... I love the finish work in the pictures :headbang:

Oh, I thought you meant the valve covers were cast and then the letters were machined, I meant that the letters are cast in and then the top of the casting is milled of, not the complete letters milled out of the casting.
