Here is another project that I am working on. I purchased this 1996 Viper GTS Venom 550 Hennessey a couple years ago and am now in the process of "tweaking" the car...for both power and looks. This Viper only has 1800 miles and hasn't even reached it's first oil change!! I can not own a vehicle and not "tweak" it regardless of its age and/or value. So let the wrenchin' begin!!!

Here are the stats before the "tweaking" began.

Engine
V10 8.0 L - 488 cubic inch
10.0:1 compression (increased due to the Hennessey mods)
Hennessey Venom cylinder heads
Hennessey roller camshaft
Hennessey intake manifold
Hennessey Venom 550 valve covers
514 HP and 543 TQ (at wheels)

Exhaust
Hennessey 1 3/4" stainless steel long tube headers
Hennessey 3" stainless steel tubes

Brakes
Brembo 13" racing calipers - front/rear
Mov'It 13" cross drilled rotors - front/rear

Suspension
Koni coil over shocks with Eibach springs - 2" lowered

Wheels
18"x10" HRE - front
18"x13" HRE - rear

Tires
285/35 18 Michelin - front
335/30 18 Michelin - rear

These pics are what the car looked like when I purchased it.

I have never owned such a fast car!

I wish that was my garage...but instead it is the dealership.

Stay tuned for the list of modifications. :attn:

GORGEOUS Viper! I had the opportunity to drive an early Viper (one of the years without side windows) and was very impressed with the power & handling. I can't imagine how much more the Hennessey package (and now your additional mods) add to it. Good luck with your build!

To me the Viper is the ultimate modern American muscle car, but I may be biased. Good luck on your project Jason.

Here's what I did to my 97 GTS when I bought it 4 years ago w/2K miles on it (it now has 9K miles).

Ron Davis radiator
98+ fan assembly
Stainless smooth intake tubes
Rain baffle delete
Ballanger headers
RT cats
Corsa 3" exhaust
3:55 gears (from 3:08)
Stoptech brakes (14"/13")
Forgelines (19x10,19x13)
Michelin Pilot Sports (295/345)
Kenwood system w/10"subs (hidden),1200 watt amp (via spare removal) and door speaker upgrades

They may sound really weird for having such large engines, but I really like Vipers. Love the blue with white stripes that you've got. If I was going to get a viper it would be that color combination

The GTS is so similar in appearnce to the Shelby Daytona Coupe and they were only Blue with White racing stripes. Hence the reason I like the Blue/White combo. :twothumbs

Jason - I was a member of VCA for two years and met for some of the monthly dinners and one of the Christmas parties. I ended up fading away cause everyone ended up just wanting to track and thrash their cars with a couple of them gettin some pretty serious damage at Road Atlanta. My insurance policy ("CHROME" from ANPAC) does not pay for ANY track related damages and with a hood replacement cost of over 10K I didn't see the appeal, so I didn't re-join.

However, at the last couple of cruises I went to I hooked up with a couple of other local Viper guys that said the atmosphere of the GA chapter has really changed and I may re-join for the Viper Run in north GA this Fall.

You can see pics of my Viper on cardomain.com, I think it's the 18th one listed under Dodge > Viper

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/232453

These pics don't show the red/white stripes I had painted around my amp, but pretty much everything else is the same. Most all of my add ons were bought from JonB @ PartsRack.com, he was a pretty good guy to deal with and always was cuttin some sort of deal to egg on an additional purchase. I just visited his site the other day and it seems Foregeline doesn't make my rims in 19" any more, just 18". Guess I was lucky to get em when I did.

I love the look of your Viper!! :hail: Very mean looking. Thanks for posting the link.

I am a new member of the VCA and have not yet gone on any VCA outings...probably because I am in Canada. I mostly use the VCA for the technical information in the Forums. There is a lot of valuable info available on their website and I have met many Viper experts. This helps newbie's like me. :)

I had previously purchased many items from Jon B but am now purchasing all my stuff from Joe Donovan (Performance by Joe). Joe is extremely friendly and helpful without pushing sales.

Wow i would love to have that viper. That is the perfect color combination. What are you going to be doing with those HRE's? The mods you have listed for it will make it a perfect vehicle. I know what your saying about leaving a car alone, before i got my first car i already had the intake exhaust and headers sitting in my room. Within the first 100 miles on the odometer they were installed. Damn i miss that car.

Best color combo out there. I'm contemplating the sale of my '67 and two Harleys to pick up a blue SRT-10 Coupe myself. I'd drive the Viper much more often than the bikes or Camaro that are taking up garage space ;)

Hi Tony...looks like you have a bunch of fast toys. :twothumbs

If you are thinking about purchasing a Viper, I highly recommend that you take a look at the Viper Club of America website. Here is the link http://www.viperclub.org/

Use the website as a tool to investigate the Viper you want to purchase. The members will advise you who to purchase a Viper from and who not to purchase a Viper from. The members are extremely educated on Vipers and will take care of you.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you become a VCA member.

This is the differential before and after. The diff. had many leaks as it was not properly sealed after the gear ratios were changed by the previous owner. I disassembled the diff and cleaned the housing surfaces to provide a better seal. I also installed a drain valve in the bottom of the case. Added some paint to the u-joints to give them some spice. Bolted the case up with stainless steel allen wrench fasteners...bling bling.

The paper stuck to the underside of the roof was a quality assurance/quality control document that noted the dimensial differences (+ -) measurements at specific points on the body. I removed it from the roof and have added it to the vehicle documentation.

Keep your eyes posted for more build pics. :git:

This is definitely going to be a Warm/Hot day only driver. I won't use it for daily transportation. But when I do drive it I'm gonna drive like a maniac!!! Yeeeeehaaaaaaa

I want to paint the intake a real dark cheery red with pearl. I was thinking of painting the valve covers a gun metal color to match the Forgeline wheels I will be installing. I would then paint the VIPER logo the same color as the intake. The spark plug wires that run just below the valve covers are a dark red. I think the transitions in between the colors would be awesome.

Thanks for the comments!! I've got some really awesome ideas for the interior to make it special.

With all the changes I am making I have no plans to make it look cheap with a bunch of add-ons. If I do add anything on it will be tastefull and blend with the complete project. I'm pretty sure that most will like the final project!!

When I purchased the car, I noticed that the exhaust covers were dented right next to the jacking area.

The original jacking area on the car was a small steel bar that was bent into a loop shape and welded to the frame. It appeared that the underside of the steel bar was flush with the underside of the exhaust. Therefore when the car was jacked-up the jack pad would contact the exhaust cover and dent it. So I decided to fix this.

My solution was to fabricate aluminum mounting pads that were 1/2" thick and mount them to the frame. By using this thickness the underside of the jacking pad and the exhaust cover are no longer flush with each other. I can now safely jack the car up without touching the exhaust cover.

Before I installed the new aluminum jacking plates to the frame, I removed the original bar loops. I then drilled holes in the frame and installed riv nuts so I could attach them with a machine screw.

Below are pics of the aluminum plates. The rear jacking pad is larger than the front jacking pad. I used stainless steel bolts with allen wrench heads. I counter sunk the mounting holes so the bolts would be flush.

I suggested in previous posts that I was thinking of installing a different cam and new VEC 3 unit to tweak horsepower. I never even thought about the cylinder heads. :dunno:

But then I received an excellent suggestion from a Viper Club of America member about making power. :bananna2: He mentioned that the biggest contributing factor to make power is making sure that the heads move large volumes of air. He suggested that I have the Hennessey heads checked for flow. This absolutely makes sense since I already have the intake and exhaust removed. :woot:

I spoke to Greg Good (Greg Good Cylinder Heads in Houston, Texas) on Friday about my cylinder heads. Greg is an awesome guy to speak with!! And his work is highly regarded by Viper Club of America members. So, I got out my wrenches and ripped the heads off. They will be shipped to him this week.

Stay tuned for the flow numbers. :6gears:

One thing I noticed when I drove the Viper is the intense heat generated by the exaust. The cabin of the car turned into an oven. Many Vipers have caught on fire because of the heat generated in the side sill area.

In order to reduce the heat and possibility of fire my solution is to install heat barrier to the sill areas and wrap the exhaust with heat insulation.

I removed all of the weld spatter from the side sill area to create a smooth surface so the heat barrier would bond. I then primed and painted the sill area. Next I installed Thermo Tec's Adhesive Back Aluminized Heat Barrier rated up to 2000°F.

ENGINE MOD'S - UPDATE

My initial plan was to modify my NA Gen. II engine to attain appx. 700 HP/TQ at the rear wheels. But I have since changed my mind after reviewing all the information posted by Viper Club of America (VCA) members. I have decided to SUPERCHARGE my Viper.

I have come to the conclusion that it is expensive to get big power out of the NA V10 (heads, stroker kit, intake). It appears that one of the least expensive routes is to supercharge the engine. By supercharging the engine I will attain the power numbers that I want...and more.

The supercharger that I am planning on installing is a Paxton. Joe Donovan (PBJ) has advised me to purchase the "Tuner" kit from Paxton and he will supply the rest. PBJ will be advising me very soon with the mods required. I really look forward to hearing from him.

I will be sending my Venom 550 heads to Greg Good to review and determine what is required to make them flow the best.

Stay tuned!

I investigated stroker kits for the Viper but decided against them because there is a greater possibility of having the motor 'grenade' due to the rod ratio. Apparently the cylinder walls become oval shaped over time and the rings wear out much faster. There is also a much bigger possibility of having the rod and crank fail due to the excessive forces.

So I'm gonna stick with a stock stoke/bore and supercharge the beast! :naughty:

Spare Tire is a MUST!!!

Well I thought I was being a real smart fella when I removed my spare tire out of the back of my Viper to remove weight and then sold it on Ebay. :hmm:

I was just informed by a Viper Club of America member that the spare tire is a very integral part of the rear crumple zone. Apparently the spare tire ties the whole rear structure together as one complete unit. I was also informed that if I ever spun out and crashed into something backwards their is a very good chance of injury if the spare tire is not in the rear. In addition, the insurance company will then check to see if the rear tire was in the car and if not then I am absolutely @#$%@#$%!!!

So needless to say I am going to get another spare tire and put it back in its place.

WS6

Apparently it is the tire/rim combo mounted together and installed into the spare tire cavity that acts as safety barrier. That is how the Dodge engineers designed the rear of the car.

SPARE TIRE ISSUE

I asked JonB (Parts Rack) to comment on the Spare Tire issue. Here are his comments:

"If you have a roll bar or cage, no worry. HOWEVER

Some history: When Vipers were first crash-tested by Fed mandate, it was discovered that the RT/10 TRUNK LID can dislodge in a rear crash. If the spare is not in the trunk, the trunk lid can intrude into the cockpit thru the rear window. The rear sport hoop acts as a blade-guide and the trunklid edge becomes a guillotene. The INFLATED Spare Tire, if BOLTED IN, becomes a great shock-absorber and rear tub stiffener and prevents the decklid from moving forward and therefore prevents head loss.

Team Viper members attending the FIRST EVER VIPER NATIONALS DRAG RACES in TX in 1995 pointed this out to the the TECH INSPECTOR there, and spares have been madated in RT/10s ever since. I am fairly certain that tech inspector was the same guy who informed SKIP THOMAS at VIPER DAYS. That tech inspector was me. At the fisrt VOI-sanctioned drags {VOI-4 Orlando} we required Spares in RT10s only.

If you have a ROLL BAR in the car, this prevents the trunk intrusion, so the spare was less important, but still a functional rear-crash safety device preventing more serious frame collapse. So VRL maintained the requirement in non-roll-cage cars, even tho federal REAR CRASH DATA on GTSs was not as forboding results as RT/10.

I think the SRT Spare tie-down is to prevent its mounting-point ejection, not to make it a structural component; But if it stays in place it certainly helps absorb impact. SRT10 frames are carry-over to 2008, and there is NO SPARE in the 08. I am curious about any crash-test results and steps taken for 08. "

Additional question to JonB:

My GTS does not have a roll bar and I do not intend on tracking the car. Having said that, is the spare tire a government requirement and/or insurance requirement for safety reasons?

JonB response:

"ABSOLUTLEY NOT. Racing venue sanctioning body requirements only. But anyone can sue you for any reason, or for no reason, if they get hurt in your car.

I just spoke to my friend SKIP SHIFTY over at DOT and he says "WE ARE THE FEDS and WE'RE HERE TO HELP YOU......BUT WE HAVE NOT MANDATED THAT REQUIREMENT"

For more Skip Shifty Antics, Search SKIP SHIFTY"

So the consensus is that the spare tire is NOT PART OF THE BODY/FRAME/CHASSIS design.

Again I've now learnt that the easiest way to add power to a Viper is by forced induction. Supercharging options are Roe Racing and Paxton. And there are many Twin Turbo suppliers (haven't reaserched because too expensive).

I spoken with many Viper Club of America members who favor the Paxton due to its overall power. Plus I personally like the looks of the Paxton. That way I still retain the OEM intake manifold.

I'm working with Joseph Dell, Viper expert, because he used to run a Paxton in his Viper. His Viper was putting out 965 HP at the rear wheels. So guess what HP/TQ numbers I am aiming for...you guessed it around 950 HP/TQ at the rear. Should make for one fast ride.

Today Joseph is running twin turbos with approximately 1600 HP/TQ. Now that is unbelievable!!

Oh, and I really enjoy the enthusiasim that members show towards my build. I really enjoy telling people about it, etc.

I would be amazed if they actually made the spare tire part of the structural integrity of the car.

I read somewhere that a lot of the import cars rely on the spare tire in rear impacts.

I guess if I had to take a hard impact I would rather have a tire between me and the wall!

The OEM accelerator pedal is plastic. The aluminum racing pedal is fastened to the OEM plastic pedal with four stainless steel screws. I decided to use my Dremmel and remove the 1/4" of plastic so that when you look at the pedal you will only see the aluminum.

THIS JUST IN...

I have just hired a 3D computer rendering expert who will be generating the following renderings of my Viper!

Exterior - with new wheels and custom hood
Interior - with custom; upholstery, gauges and dash
Chassis - will include suspension, wheels, engine and tansmission
Engine - with twin turbos

Some people may ask, "Why are you having 3D renderings done for your car?" Because I want to see what my car will look like before it is complete. This will give me a real good idea of what the custom hood will look like and the twin turbo system.

But simply.... I LOVE 3D COMPUTER RENDERINGS!!! + IT'S COOL

Stay tuned for some awesome 3D pictures of my Viper

Did you know that anyone can become a Viper Club of America member even though you do not own a Viper? The membership is very affordable, roughly $100/yr (don't quote me on that) and you even get four Viper magazines per year. :woot:

Many Viper enthusiasts join the Viper Club of America to talk with owners and basically get educated about Vipers. Website is www.viperclub.org (http://www.viperclub.org)

Below are the renderings for the custom instrument gauges. Changes made to all gauges were; new font style, text size reduced, new needle indicator, added Sneaky Pete (snake)logo and Viper GTS text.

Speedometer -(km/h)
I removed the mph numbers from the gauge for clarity. Also increased to 400 km/h = 248.5 mph. Removed the trip odometer and the reset button.

I have been struggling to find a company that wants to create custom gauge faces for my Viper. It seems that most of the companies only want to work on older muscle car gauges. They don't want to touch new stuff like the Viper. But I think I may have found someone with the expertise to work on these gauges.

Before I send the gauges away I made sure to remove the gauge face from the gauge. The gauge face was crimped onto the gauge housing. I was pretty sure that noone would want to attempt removing the gauge face, so I did. I used my trustworthy Dremmel with a cut of bit and proceeded to remove the crimped lip. Worked like a charm.

Each individual part is rendered and then connected together much like if you were physically building the car.

Not sure what you mean by exterior panels? If you are referring to the body panels they will be done very soon. But before he does the body panels, he wants to complete the chassis which includes; suspension, brakes, engine, transmission, differential and exhaust.

Hope this helps!

I was wondering the same thing actually, in regards to rendering all of the individual pieces. To the uninformed (me) it seemed really overkill to do each and every piece, but it is undoubtedly amazing that the rendering will go into that kind of detail, truly amazing. I guess we're used to seeing Photoshop renderings to "see what the car is going to look like before its done" (and some pretty darn good ones at that) but this is just beyond...

obviously the guy does amazing work............i think the guys who were asking about it are just curious WHY there is all this rendering work done in the first place?

usually we just see people do a couple exterior renderings to show what the car is planned to look like when its finished, but you seem to be actually blueprinting every single detail.

im guessing its just for fun and to have a neat record of the buildup?

whatever the reason, its definetly cool and we love seeing all the updates.

Cool!! Happy to hear that you like the updates

Tom Sullivan is an absolute fanatic for rendering engines and anything mechanical. Tom has always wanted to do a Viper engine and then the opportunity presented itself.

Once Tom has the engine completely rendered he will have the ability to render custom valve covers, custom intake manifolds, superchargers and twin turbo systems.

There are quite a few Viper part suppliers, Viper tuners and Viper enthusiasts who would like to see these what these customs items would like like on their Vipers before they purchase them or manufacturer them. So once he has the base engine complete it will be very easy for him to sell his services to these individuals.

Same goes for custom hoods, custom wheels, custom interior components, etc. etc.

Needless to say there will be many, many more renderings to come. Enjoy the progress :pics2:

Cheers

I'm working with Joseph Dell, Viper expert, because he used to run a Paxton in his Viper. His Viper was putting out 965 HP at the rear wheels. So guess what HP/TQ numbers I am aiming for...you guessed it around 950 HP/TQ at the rear. Should make for one fast ride.

Today Joseph is running twin turbos with approximately 1600 HP/TQ. Now that is unbelievable!!

Joseph's a nice guy; I first met him about 10 years ago, when he was still into Mustangs. Last time I saw him was at Dynolab in Marietta GA...he had just broken his Viper's rear on the dyno, and I helped him push it up on the trailer ! Unreal car, and its much more powerful now than it was then...I take it he probably has a solid axle in there now (Dana 60 maybe?)?

Yeah, JD is a great guy :) He is in the process of installing twin turbos onto his Viper. I understand that it will put out insane HP/TQ when he is finished so I suspect it will need a really beefy rear end. :jawdrop:

Jay, are you sure the heat shielding will stay stuck once some heat gets into it? I'd hate for it to start peeling off because it's too close on the outside of that tunnel.

No worries there my friend. I know the Hansen Brothers would have used foil :rotfl: but I chose Thermo Tec Heat Barrier that can withstand continues 400 degree F. The adhesive backing sticks like @#$ to a blanket. :hah: No chance of that stuff peeling off.

Top notch....

On the renderings..... Is your guy actually pulling measurments from each individual part or has he got a spec sheet from dodge?

I have a provided Tom with a set of drawings and specifications for the engine, transmission and chassis. The drawings are extremely accurate and provide the detail necessary to generate top notch renderings. :hail:

If Tom requires a dimension that he does not have, I simply go out to the car and measure it myself.

I have also provided Tom with hundreds of pictures to aid him with the rendering process.

Hope this helps!

Just wanted to update the members on progress. I have been sick for the past couple of weeks and therefore haven't done much of anything. But I've still done some stuff.

I just purchased the speakers, sub and amplifier. I will be fabricating a custom sub enclosure to fit in the rear of the Viper. I'll post pics as soon as I start work on the system.

The door hinges have a flexible tensile piece of steel that the door hinge acts against to provide tension when the door is open. Over time the original grease dries out.

If the grease has dried out, you'll hear a 'pop' noise when opening the door. This is a tell tale sign that new grease is required.

If new grease is not applied it is very possible and likely that the flexible piece of steel will break . If it does break the only fix is to purchase a complete new hinge...and that isn't cheap.

Needless to say I took the opportunity to apply new grease because my hinges were drier than a beer-fart-in-the-desert. :twothumbs

NO MORE 3D COMPUTER RENDERINGS

I just got word that the fella I hired to create all the awesome 3D computer renderings no longer has time to do them for me. Apparently he is too busy at his day job and unable to continue my project.

In these pictures I have removed most of the orginal paint in and around the engine bay area. I wasn't happy with the OEM finish because of how much weld spatter was on the frame.

I used some good ol' aluminum foil to wrap pieces that I didn't want painted. This is the easiest and quickest way to cover parts that you don't want painted.

I would suggest custom building your own Viper frame from flat sheet as at this point who knows what cosmetic flaws are hidden in the stock frame ?

The foil is one of the best tricks in the book.

The reason I haven't made much progress on my Viper is because I've spent most of my time putting together a deal to purchase a super car!!! I've spent a great deal of time dreaming and planning this 'other' project!

As soon as I complete the purchase of this super car, I will let all of ya know what it is. Plus I will be modifying it. :naughty: Stay tuned. :smoke:

Some people have asked me, "Why would you repaint a frame that has no damage or wear?" My answer is simple, I am a perfectionist and love the details. I really enjoy trying to make something better.

Another perfectionist is a guy called Shadowman. He is the owner of Discovery Automotive and takes pride in his work. I am absolutely blown away by the care he takes with all his customers cars when they are in his shop. If you want to see a bunch of cool pictures I highly recommend viewing his "Current Projects" on his website http://www.discovery-automotive.com/portal/

Any way, I am doing exactly what Shadowman is doing, modifying an all ready high performance sports car to the extreme! Yeeeehhhhhhaaaaaaaa :headbang:

Hope all enjoy the build
