bare metal

hey guy I am in the process of stripping my car to the bare metal in some place to check to metal underneath... I am doing this in small sections at a time. I want to treat the metal before I prime. do u guys do a skim coat of body filler. also I was told that I should use something to clean the metal 1st what are some of your methods of metal prep

I would DA the area and wipe it with degreaser metal prep then coat it with 2 good coats of epoxy primer to seal it.
Then apply filler were needed.

I would etch prime before you epoxy prime it will help the adhesion. bondo it later as needed

or use etching epoxy primer!

epoxy primer like the DP90 from PPG does an amazing job of adhering to bare metal. you can then prime over that and perform any body work.

I wiped down my bare metal with a bunch of clean rags and "Prep Solv".

Their Epoxy is a etching epoxy. It is THE BEST epoxy made.... :twothumbs

Simply strip to bare metal and apply. If you have pitted rust any where I'd metal etch it (phosphoric acid), then clean it real good and lay down two medium coats of the SPI Epoxy.

Their clear is second to none, as well... Their whole line up is forty times better then PPG or DuPont..

i have a question is it ok strip a car put on epoxy primer and then go back and replace quarteres and rockers and stuff.

Yes but just put on the parts you are saving for now so you don't waste it. I'm only familiar with Dupont they reccomend variprime first that's why I suggested what I said.

Does SPI's black epoxy primer look satin or flat? I'm considering using it on the floorboards instead of DP90, my other option is to go with the hot rod black by Kirker ( single stage urethane ). The car was shot with Variprime, right now the car is prepped with bare metal in areas, variprime in areas and original paint in others. All areas have been hit with scotchbright or a roloc wheel. I do not want to prime first, my goal is to paint it with one process and be done.

I would top coat it so it will hold up for many years.

I have made up my mind, I'm going with some DP 74 ( red ) epoxy primer I had left over from another build. Last night I mixed some and did some test areas to make sure it is still good, and everything looks fine. I will then topcoat it with John Deere Blitz black which is a synthetic enamel and inexpensive. $10 a quart with a nice low gloss look.
