well today there is a block sale were every one is out trying to make a quick buck for a 12 pack. well anyways i was sitting in my garage and this guy walks up to me and says to me ill give you $800 for your "chevelle". i told him that it was a 67 GTO and it was not a chevelle, and it is not for sale. Well, he tries to tell me that it is a chevelle and im wrong that its not 67 gto..:hmm:, he started getting mad tone in his voice i finnaly had to tell him to leave.
just thought i would share this little experience and see if anyone else has had someone tell them their car isnt what they say it is.

put a 9 in front of the 8 and we have a deal!
I've not had *that* happen, but today I had a friend swear up and down that the 302 engine was a 2.875 stroke..
I think I pushed too far when I said that a 3.25" crank from a 327 put into a 4.125 bore (like a 400 block) would be a 348 or 350cid engine. :)
I think his head started smoking!

The worst part is you are in your driveway so he knows where you live. The rules of engagement are way different than if you were in a gas staion or parking lot,you have to be a little more diplomatic.
My problem seems to be the guy who wants to tell me my car should be put back to stock, or tell me to sell it on "barry jason"...
....as in Barret Jackson.

What a head case! I think you should keep one in the chamber and an eye on your garage for awhile. Not to be an alarmist but you can't be too careful these days!
I don't think I have ever had anyone insist my car isn't what it is...but I have had people insist that I do not have a big block Chevy engine in my car because "Pontiac never put a BBC in the TA's..."
...and this is after explaining in detail that the engine is not factory...some people's kids.

I guess Mopars are really not known very well from where I grew up. I was 17 and had my Challenger in a local show. A guy walked up and told me that he had a Charger just like it years ago. I told him it must have been one helluva car. That was the first time.
I get " I had a 383 Hemi" or "I had a 340 Hemi" all the time. All you can say is "Cool" or "Wow".
All these rare vehicles and engines these people have and it's a wonder that they haven't surfaced on the collectors market yet. All those E-body Chargers must be sittin' in barns somewhere still.

Years ago when I had my 70 GS350 Buick I used to get all the time that those cars only came with 455's (some even said 430).....I would look them straight in the eye and ask..."Then what does the GS350 on the side of the front fenders mean?" :wedgie:

I stored my Camaro at my dads house for 6 months one time, his wife had a yard sale, after the 25th round of questions he decided to put it back in the garage, and it was covered with blankets, couldn't tell what it was, but people wouldn't leave it alone.

These same kinda folks lead to my license plate. It's done three Power Tours and you cannot imagine how many times we have to explain that it's not a GTO. ( just like the one my bud Eddie's third cousins next door neighbor had back in 65. Had that 421 six pack too.)

I get that with my Camaro. I intentionally built the car without any emblems whatsoever. Every so often, while parked in town, I get some bozo who is trying to impress his girlfriend: "I just sold a GTO almost EXACTLY like this one. Had it for years....." I never miss the opportunity to educate bozo in front of the GF: "Really? You had a Pontiac GTO just like this? This is a Chevrolet Camaro" :wedgie:

Dude it sounds from you're profile that you have a Tempest. Do you really expect all non-car people (or maybe non-Pontiac people) to know the difference between two trim levels especially one that has been moded? Besides there are so many Tempest/Lemans converted to GTOs that no wonder people don't realize the former exist. And it's not like a 421 could not have been swapped (the engine at least existed and is a Pontiac).
Lighten up a little. At least they got the Make right (see my posting in dumbest questions asked about your car).

One of my wife's friends always asks me how my Mustangs are, just to poke at me a little.
In the 79 I always got "my buddy in high school had one just like that, but he wrecked it one night drinking" or "I used to own the exact same car, but it was a blue 1970 and it had the big block"

I have had people try and argue with me all week that my 58 is not a Nomad and they did not make them past 57 and they were never 4 doors and yada yada. Yeah, I know what you mean. I just tell the people after awhile, ok, you know since it is yours and all! I am just trying to pull one over on you!

We had an open house at the shop on Saturday. A couple of guys walked in, one older, one younger. The young guy asks "what year Mustang is that?" and the old guy promptly responds "that's not a Mustang, that's a '69 Camaro". He then turns to us and says "these young guys don't know s**t about muscle cars."
If that wasn't enough, the two of them went on for a while about how difficult it must have been to modify the Mustang II suspension to work with the car.
Everybody's an expert.

Maybe when somebody says they had a car "just like that" you should start asking them what happened to it and pretend that your car might once have been theirs. Really mess with their head.
I don't know if it is a good idea, or really really bad.

I dont really get the "miss naming" but I get alot of the wrong year questions. Like why dont I put a 390 or a 460 in it. Guess I'll have to wait and see how south Georgia reacts to it when I get it on the road again. Although I get ALOT of "shoulda' been a fastback"

95% of the time I’m happy to discuss the mods I’ve made to my car to anyone who asks. I still remember well the many years I was that guy at the car show… without my car. I like my car, and I like talking about it. There is that ignorant 5%, though, that are just compelled to spout out mangled facts to either me or their companions. I have told Vanzuuk1- this year we need to have some fun with them. Either go along with it, thank them for setting the record straight, or ask them other questions that we know the answers to. Almost like the Jay Leno “Man on the Street” skit. Problem is, I’ve only hit 2 cruise nights early this year before I tied my car up again on a lengthy brake swap.

Or the angry guy who demanded to know who put the spoiler on my car, he was deeply troubled by my disrespect for gm sheetmetal.

I remember one time pulling up to a bait and tackle shop near one of the nice lakes here in GA. I was driving a twin turbo '91 300Z. Would have been '94 or '95. An old coger near the door asked me when I walked inside if that was "one of them there new Corvettes". I replied in all seriousness, "Its a Japanese Corvette". I swear to god, he's probably still scratching his head over that one!
I go by Itsa68 here, as anyone who has a first gen car knows, the most common question you get EVERYWHERE is "What year is that?"
I also remember one time at a party, I was with my brother who has a 67 Camaro. We were talking cars to one of the bozos at the party, and my bro mentioned that his camaro was a 67. This guy says, yea, I used to have a 57 camaro. We were like, really? Are you sure it wasn't a 67, as that was the first year that they built them. He was so hard headed, and wouldn't back down. Kept swearing that he had a 57. What an a$$. We just ignored him, and didn't question him on it after that. Some people are just so stupid.

Had a guy at the grocery store who could not figure out how I grafted a Camaro rear end to a Mustang.
The car is a '70 RS Camaro.

Yeah, I get the same thing. 70 Z sits in the driveway, but the "need to be restored" 70 Challenger is in the garage kinda buried under junk and tools. People drive up, walk up to the garage, and ask me if I want to sell the Charger. By habit, I always turn and look at the Challenger emblem on the grille. I then look back at the guy and all I say is "no" Now, I KNOW people used to watch the Dukes of Hazzard. Uhm, the General doesn't look anything like my Challenger.
I guess Mopars are really not known very well from where I grew up. I was 17 and had my Challenger in a local show. A guy walked up and told me that he had a Charger just like it years ago. I told him it must have been one helluva car. That was the first time.

we had a block sale a few weeks back as well. some guy came up walked right past the tables we had blocking the driveway and into the garage. My wife didn't notice him at first. I asked him if I could help him (I was in the shop tending to my son) he was like wow nice tools which ones are for sale???? uh none now please see the stuff ont he tables out front.
The garage door stayed closed after that! and double locked for a few days I might add!

Nowdays when any bozo asks me a question I just automaticly agree with whatever he wants it to be. "Is that a 327?" Sure is. He nods proudly to his friends and I don't have to talk to him anymore. Everyone is happy. And my garage door is NEVER open anymore for people to see in.

One more reason to get my dam car finished. I'm shaving the emblems because I like the clean look, but this side benefit will be fun.
The only time I ever had anyone ever argue with me about what kind of car I had was when I had my 91 camaro this black guy I was talking to about his monte SS kept arguing with me that it was a corvette finally I just let him have the argument...
but the thing that really bugs me is when people ask me about my 442 they are always like "is that a real 442? does that have a 442 in it?" then I tell them that in 86 they only put 307s in cutlasses even in the 442s and that there is no such thing as a factory 442ci motor form the factory and that 442 stands for 4bbl carb, 4 speed tranny, dual exaust. 9 times out of ten people walk away or shake their heads saying its not a real 442...
so the last few times ive been asked I just say yep its a 442 and if they ask if its got a 442 in it I just tell them yep its a real 442 from the factory lol
and it still holds true, never argue with an idiot they will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!
