Steve, the car is looking SICK!! Love that undercarraige shot and the rear tires/suspension is just a work of art!

I too was wondering why you didn't mandrel bend the exhast system but do understand that most shops can't mandrel bend 3".

Great job bud! Looks freaking amazing!

In the interest of neihborly/spousal harmony I need/want an exhaust that is pretty darn quiet at idle cruise. I don't mind a howl that suggests the hounds of hell at WOT, but it needs to be pretty mellow under normal circumstances.

You will achieve that with Magnaflow and an x-pipe. However 3" pipe will be louder than 2.5"

The other key to low noise/resonance is how thick the material is. In many cases the stainless tubing is pretty thin and this passes through a lot of noise and resonance. That is why we went with a coated steel. It was cheaper and very heavy gauge.

The repairs to Penny are done! :woot:

After 5 months and $35,000 the Camaro is officially out of paint jail. The crew at BOS did an amazing job on her and she's better than before the accident. Since she's SEMA bound they spent over 60 hrs color sanding and buffing the paint and trust me that the pics don't do the color or the finish justice.

I really want to thank Best Of Show for fixing my car so well and for dealing with the insurance company to make sure it got fixed right.

All I need to do is finish the interior, get an alignment and add on the ATS carbon fiber spoiler.

We fixed the gas tank today.. no help from Fuel Safe who charged me $58 to overnight insuficiant parts to make the repair.

Still have an elec gremlin in the brake lights, but the car runs great. Tomorrow she heads to the interior shop. By the way, this is the how the car sits (ride heigth).

The BOS crew got her all loaded on the trailer tonight. :woot:

Someone asked me that.. "Would you sell it?" and I said "no, I have too much work in it and I couldn't afford to build a nicer car"

Then they said, "what if someone at SEMA offers you $120k or some other stupid amount?"

I honestly don't know, I love the car and I'm dying to drive it but it would hard to turn down tens of thousands of dollars of pure profit. To be honest I hope I don't get any real offers at SEMA and I can drive the car. My wife told me not to sell it or I'm in trouble. lol

Hey, I don't plan on selling the car. I have zero plans to put it "for sale"... I have all sorts of plans to drive the hell out of it.

But...

In the end it's a car and if an amount was offered that was a "one time" deal then I would be foolish to dismiss it. I have a family and a mortgage.

I really don't forsee selling the car. I sold the blue car because it wasn't what I wanted, Penny is exactly what I want.

So lets all think happy thoughts of apexs and off track excursions (resulting in no damage of course ;) )

I didn't know they were doing this until this flyer show up at work. The pressure!!! :willy:

Eric Thornson (does all the interiors for Steve Strope) has been busy on my interior. I wanted something that looked simple and OEM.

He is doing the carpet in a "small loop" that just a tighter version of the factory carpet and the door panels are in a black leather that has a grain pattern to match the dash pad. The main reason was to delete the arm rest areas since my door bars are my arm rests. He is also covering some of the cage bars in the same leather.

Here's the door panel he fabbed out of aluminum. He likes it better than cardboad since it keeps his shape and wont tear if removed. He should be done by this Saturday.

I agree with you Steve.
It is just a car (albiet a VERY nice car).
However, if someone wants to step up with the right number it would be IMHO foolish to pass on a great offer..
And to be honest your car is hot right now. You will more than likely have people breathing down your neck at SEMA.
Obviously it is best to sell when the car is at its peak in terms of exposure and interest.
The hot rod car industry reminds my of my single days.
The fun was in the chase. Once you are successfull in reaching your "goal". You start wanting to go onto the next dream.
Please do not interpret this to mean that I don't LOVE driving my cars because I do. But I like the adventure as well.

The interior is almost done.. Eric Thornson did the carpet, the back seat blockoff and he covered many of the cage bars in leather.

I also installed the G2X Rackpak GPS track computer. It's coming along nicely. All he has to do now if finish the door panels. They will have an OEM retro look. He does very good work, in fact the other car he's working on for SEMA is Steve Strope's Torino.

I think the right "sold" number would be more like 200G, then your about at the same cost Dale Jr. had to pay at DSE for his ride. At that price, you could sell it and be happy. Anything less your selling it short. If you don't get that... drive it! It is really one of the nicest examples of a PT car out there, you had better drive it no matter what, sale or no sale.
Looking forward to seeing it in SEMA.

Here's one before the seats, still covering the roll cage. The carpet is like the OEM stuff but with a tighter look. He edged it all in a cloth binding (Mercedes??). I highly reccomend him if anyone needs interior work, he's in Agoura Hills, CA.

In the center of the dash?

That panel is a remnant from when the Camaro was a Sportsman class drag car. Back then (1995/96) it ran 9 sec quarter mile times on nitrous.

The panels control all the electrical functions: lights, ignition, fuel pump, cooling system, etc. - There is no ignition key.

There are three buttons for Nitrous, I guess I should add a system so as not to be a poser. lol

She is officially back on the road. I drove her about 20 miles from the interior guy to Wilwood where they are going to fine-tune my brakes. About the only "road issue" I had were a few small rattles and such that I need to track down.

I can't tell it was ever hit. The shop spent $2500 putting it on a computer rack that pulled all the panels to '68 Camaro factory specs. Was pretty cool to see done.

Still needs a GOOD alignment, will see how time goes.

well, the door bar makes a perfect arm rest :)

I really like the simple pull tabs, one of my better ideas and Eric nailed what I wanted for the interior, an updated OEM look using better materials. He even incorporated the CAMARO emblems.

I'm very happy with how she came out. I think I'm going to make a sticker for the window that has the paint code since I was asked that question about eleven million times. lol

No, I'm running 335/30/18s in the back.

In the front I went with 255s instead of 275s since they were almost as wide as my old 275 RA1 tires.

Not installed yet, I need a couple no-load flashers.. But, it will be operated off a toggle switch on the dash. The horn is a red button on the dash.

Well, there are still keys to lock the doors and since there arn't any door lock pulls you can't just smash the window and unlock the doors.

I doubt an ignition key switch slows down most good thieves. Plus I have a kill switch and specific way the switches have to go for the car to start. Plus I can take the steering wheel. lol

But you're right. It's not like I'm going to park the car at the mall for 6 hours or overnight in a bad area.

lol.. that's not my car.. I shot that for the paint and body issue last year. It was at DP Chevy in Huntington Beach. All tapped up like that is sure looked like my car though (but it was a 69).

Just a steel Goodmark hood.. I wanted CF but they couldn't have it done in time for SEMA. I might add one later though.

I got one of the tachs (the digital one) working great but the other one won't go below 1,700 RPM and seems "slow"... gotta call SW on it.

The speedo has been calibrated and works great when the car is in motion. When at idle it gyrates all over the place like it's on crack.. again, time to call SW.

The clear protection is on the car so she's ready for the road. Next week she goes in for a super double-throw-down alignment.
I still have a squeek in the front drive assembley. I doesn't make noise at idle, just under load. I've replaced both the tensioner and idler pullies so it must be the PS, ALT or water pump..

I still need to wire in the Racepak..

Anyways, that's the Penny update.. and for visting the thread here's a bonus shot. This was taken by Mike Harrington of Super Chevy and was one of the candiates for the cover (but it was never used).. was taken up in the mountains.

That 'bird is awesome, even though I'm not a fan of the hood on it.

It is very difficult to keep your self control when someone has just busted your baby. When I was in a wreck with my T/A (wasn't my fault... guy came flying by me and hydroplaned in front of me), I could have beat him when he started yelling at the officer because he didn't understand why his insurance had to pay. We were in the back seat of the patrol car behind the cage so I'm pretty sure I could have got a few punches before the officer could have got to him (and I was quite upset). After listening to the same thing "why does my insurance have to pay" a few times, the officer turned around and told him about the numerous tickets he would issue him if he didn't shut up.

Glad to see Penny back on the road, it is an awesome machine!!

Hints and tips on your wiring of switches for the car, keeping the engine bay clean.

Look forward to the list, not trying to copy Bad Penny, but there are a lot of ideas I'd like to try, or if not then I have an idea of what I want to do before I do something and have to tear back into the car to change it.

Like I wish I would have thought of/know about how to smooth the firewall before I had it painted body color and installed the motor and such.

Don't worry they have already flown my way!! :dunno: Just because of color. Nothing else is even close to the same much less the quality........go figure. Anyway like you said there are only so many colors and the funny thing is Prowler Orange is an OEM Chrysler color from the 02 Prowler, I loved the color when I first saw it in 02.

The guy who did my LS2 tuning recently bought a new alignment rack. This thing is so cool. It can measure bumpsteer, check if the chassis is square to the body and a host of other things. I guess it cost over $50k installed and uses digital cameras on targets. The technology and graphics were stunning.

Anyways, the best news was that my car is perfectly square.. to the hundreth of an inch. :woot:

And even though my car is a bit lower than optimal the bumpsteer is very minimal. Almost none in a rise and very slight to the right on a compression (1 inch each way).

My thrust angle was at about 2-degrees so we brought that to around zero. Scott was impressed with how easy the LD three-link was to adjust. We went for a good performance street alignment since that's where the car will spend 90% of its life.

The alignment wasn't cheap but I feel it was worth every penny. The car tracks dead straight, doesn't "hunt" the ruts in the roads and feels great. We also did some computer fine tuning and figured out my front squeek. When I had my alt bracket powdered they coated the nub where the idler rides by accident. I cleaned it off, but not good enough thus causing the pulley to ride at a VERY slight angle. This causes the chirp. I will order up a new brackt tomorrow and just paint the damn thing. lol

I also found out that my car runs out of gas at 1/2 tank on the gauge.. don't ask but I need to adjust the sender. :_paranoid

Here's when I got the clear film done.

I must say, from a few feet away you can't tell it's there and even up close it's not noticable if you don't know to look for it.

I ended up doing everything from the middle of the door down along with the front upper and lower valances. Now I really only have to worry about the front of the hood and the front of the fenders. I will spray on some protector at track day for these areas.

Getting a picture of it is hard, but I guess that's the idea. lol
The guy, Shaun, used a product called Venture film. It had far less grain compared to the 3M stuff and was very optically clear.
They also reccomended using that turtle wax ICE stuff to maintain the look of the film. Luckily that company gave me a case of it a few months ago.

I saw some of the clear 3M on a two 79 Z28's on the power tour. It looked good but one was Red and the other Silver. The red car you could hardly see it. The silver cars paint looked a little flat were it was applied.

How's it looking on Penny? Did the paint loose any sheen or have a color change. The color flip flops all over the place anyway so it may not be noticable....LOL!!

Fixed the squeek from my front drive today. It was a combination of a bad bracket and a very dry belt. :woot:

She's running good now.

Also, found a radiator cap worthy of our cars.. nice but not all polished and flashy. It's from Billet Specialties and was about $20.

Someone asked me about my fire extinguisher mount. It's just plate alum I had cut to a template at my water jetter. I then drilled the hole and rounded the edges. After that I attached the plate for the Safecraft extinguisher. Oh the "tongue" is offset one inch and was bent down towards the floor just a bit.

Lastly, I had a request for a pic of how my proportioning valve is mounted. Here it is. it's hung off a bracket that is attached to the master and the clutch master hangs off it as well. Makes for one tidy package.

I will hit C&C after Barret Jackson.. :)

Had to be one of the most borning C&C's in a long time. A bunch of stock BMW's, cool.......not. There were nicer cars in the over flow then in the main lot.

I have seen your f-body a few times, and I saw it again at C&C last weekend. Looks great. I'm sure that 502 is nice. ;) Still amazes me how low your car sits.

Yea, the radiator cap is black annodized. It pops on over the actuall cap. It only comes in black but I suppose you could have ti refinished however you like. I was going to coat it like the headers but I'm not sure since the black looks pretty good.

Here's another one. The bracket is a simple L shapped deal. It goes from the master cylinder bolts forward and is sandwiched between the prop valve and the cluch master. It's charcoal grey in color (like the ATS bracket). I will try and find just a pic of the bracket at home.

My new lightened and polished 3.90 gears came in.. man, they are almost too nice to hide in the differential. lol
Cost was $240 for the lightening and $99 for the polishing. The new case is an aluminum unit that will knock 20lbs off the back of the car. The best part is that weight is unsprung!

Steve it has been a joy reading all about Bad Penny again, I absolutely adore this car and it is the one car that made me fall in love with the first Gen Camaro!

I only wish I could afford to do one with 1/4 of the detail you have here, heck I'd just be happy to have one full stop :)

You know.. having a car "detailed" is pretty cheap.. it just takes time and patience. It's looking at the little things and figuring out how to make it look cleaner and more integrated to the car.

Thanks Steve, I have a few ideas for a PT car I'd like to build, will be a few years before I pick up the base car. I'm looking at using an Holden (1976 - 1978) LX or UC Torana Hatch body as the start. A first gen Camaro is just too expensive over here to find, specially one that doesn't need everything replaced...
