      Biggest rear tire on 15x8 4.5BS for 68 F-body

I went through 60 some pages on this forum and couldn't find this question anywhere. At least not from looking at the subject line.

Anyway I plan on using Hotchkis lowering spings with factory disc/drums on my bird and want to know what the biggest and safest (as in clearence) tire I can run. My thinking is 235\60\15 in front and 245\60\15 in the back.

I saw one guy with a 69 camaro was running 2inch lowering springs with 235/60/15 and 255/60/15 but this was on a 69.

Am I being to agressive or will an even bigger tire fit in back?

I have fit a 275/60 on the same type rim. Close but no rubbing with clearanced lips.

But the 69s have a inch more room don't they? I'm guessing I wont get much response on this one since most people are running 17s or 18s on on this site.

Way back before 18" wheels bacame the norm it was the 275/60/15. This is about a 28" tall tire so it tucks well under the rear fender.

Well I finaly measured my ralley rims and found out they are 4.5 backspacing on a 8 inch. I was hoping they were 5 inch backspaceing. I think I'm just going to go with a 235 in front and a 245 in back and keep it safe.

4.5 will be fine as long as you have good bushings in the rear. I ran a 275 on a 15x8 with 4.5 and on a steep angle up a driveway actually wedged the inner sidewall into the wheel housing. I changed the bushings from soft rubber to hard Poly and it went away.

Then I should be in good shape then. Except I have a 68 not a 69. I'm still going to go with a 245 in the back. I think I will burn them up fast enough that if I don't like them I will go bigger on the next set.

      Thanks

At the risk of incriminating myself...I'll admit to having run a 305/50/15 on an 8.5'' wheel for over 3 years on my 69, strictly on the street and dragstrip without problems. Though I should add, that doesn't mean that I wasn't asking for trouble...I was 16, didn't know any better!

Anyone have pictures of a 275/60 on a 15x8 wheel? I've got a 69 Firebird, and I might end up having to stick with a set of rallyes for the time being.

Bad ass cars john.......I agree the fifteens look great on those cars, I grudgingly run sixteens to get a good tire.
