View Full Version : HP on a stock 4l80e
540' chevelle

How much HP does a stock 4l80e hold? I have a 540 in a chevelle with a manual valve body th400 and I love untill I get on the highway and them I'm in pain!
Found one at a truck yard for $500.00 looks like a deal. But I have some questions.
1. How much HP can it handle stock.
2. Will my flyweel work.
3. What manual ratchet shifter will work with this trans.
Thanks

Here's a couple answers:
1. 500HP seems to be the consensus, and maybe 600ft/lb of torque.
2. I believe the TH400 flexplate will work, but the bolts to the converter will change to metric. ARP makes some good ones.
3. Any ratcher shifter for an OD tranny should work, but check the application guide. I know B&M sells a few, and Lokar too. Lokar also has a strong cable kit that goes between most ratchet shifters and the 80E.
If you can spring for a controller and harness, the programmable part of the 80E is great. It allows you to dial in upshift/downshift points per gear, line pressure vs. TPS per gear, datalog including temps, and much more.
TransGo makes a really nice shift kit for the 80E, and it is compatible with the TCI controller or a manual valve body.
Rossler now makes a transbrake for the 80E. Unfortunately it does not work with the Transgo shift kit, but it does work with others.

The stock 4l80e converters I've seen have been 6-bolt instead of 3 holding them to the flexplate.

6 Bolts that means that I will need a new flexplate right? Any one else care to coment.
I would like to shift it manualy like my ratchet shifter. My chevelle never gets any tracktion any way maybe a stocker would hold up.
Any one have one in a chevelle.

might have to open up the trans tunnel, the circumference of the 80e is much bigger.
There is a full manual version of the 80e available called quadzilla.
Another stand alone controller is compushift.

My SFI flexplate has a dual bolt pattern on it, but the Hughes converter only uses 3 of the holes.
I got my 80E into a 81 Malibu tunnel without a lot of trouble, and I think it was never designed for the TH400 like the Chevelle was.

I have one in a 64 Chevelle (not a stock trans). There were a spot or two that had to be "clearanced" for the electrical connections to clear.

I just got one in my 72 vette, replaced the stock 4 speed trans. It was pretty tight but it did fit with the only problem being the main electrical connector that I had to make room for. I couldnt get the stock dipstick in and ended up using a lokar dipstick for it. The bellhousing area is tight because of the big stock converter that it was designed to hold. It actually looks empty with my 2500 stall converter in there. I am using a PCS controller with mine and the stock vette auto shifter. I am adding Steevo's paddle shifter setup so I am not concerned about a good quality shifter as all it really needs to do is go from park to drive. I have 3.08 gears and even with that I would tach about 2800 at 75mph with the 4 speed stick. The overdrive has dropped that down to 2200 now, its sweet!! I have only driven it a short distance and still have lots of playing around to do with the software. Good luck with the install, you will love the overdrive.

How much HP do you have Mike?
Folks the 4L80E is NOT as big as people say. It's size, weight and HP loss is exagerated.

I havent had it on a dyno yet so whatever a 468 with 8.5 comp, oval port heads, mild cam and 15 lbs boost will produce. I have a 700 trans out of an 89 vette thats about the same length overall as a 4l80e. I weighed it on a digital scale and it weighs right at 200 lbs without the converter in it. The stock 6 bolt converter weighs around 80 lbs and the 2500 stall converter with the flex plate I used in mine weighs around 45 lbs. I weighed my saginaw 4 speed with an aluminum bellhousing and the stock flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, throwout brg and it weighed 140 lbs, so I figgured the 4l80e swap will add 100 lbs to the car. I guess if you were in a situation where hundreths of a second counted it might make a difference but in a street cruiser it probably isnt that big a deal, at least to me it isnt.

...And it's 100 lbs right at the bottom middle of the car. 8.5CR and 15lbs boost is about 1.8hp/cube. :jump: 850HP
