i have a z-gauge from autometer brand new, the engine overheated a bit because i ran a reverse flow water pump using stock 69 pulleys. stupid mistake, however... the water temp gauge does not work anymore. installed new water pump and old mech. gauge, and runs well now. but new gauge won't work.
what should i check? how do i know if it's the sender, or the gauge that's broken?

just wondering if there is a way to check if the gauge is broken?

Could always put 12v (or 9) to it, see if the needle moves.

aw jeez i feel dumb, i was running the wires from my painless wiring kit to the designated gauges, but spliced them into the main gauge cluster. and at first the temp gauge worked fine and the oil press did not, so i made a new wire to the sender for the press and it worked. the temp works by the same procedure now - i just don't understand why it worked before and not now.
thanks for the help guys

Don't hesitate on sending them back, Autometer is top notch on service- I had a recall tach die after about 4 years, they fixed it free; another time I got overspray on the lenses, they rebuilt them really cheap and fast- good people.
