I'm looking for a better than stock upgrade on my front disc setup for my 79 Monte. What do you all recommend? Is there a particular kit from someone?
Also, is a spindle change really needed? I'd almost rather not change the spindle so that it doesnt interfere with the Air Ride Tech control arms I plan on using...
TIA for the help.

A cheap way to get bigger/better brakes is to install 98-2005 2WD Blazer complete/loaded front spindles. They are a bolt operation. The only change you will need is a thread adapter to convert the female end of the brake caliper hose to fit the factory threads on the steel line at the frame.
This will give you a 1/2 inch bigger rotor and a much better 2 piston caliper with increased clamping pressure. No other changes are needed.
If you shop for the complete spindles at the local boneyard AND the boneyard is NOT familiar with this upgrade, expect to pay $100-$150 for the pair of loaded/complete spindles. If the boneyard is savvy and watches EBAY, expect to pay $300-$350 plus shipping for the same parts!
This is an nice, cheap, easy and big safety improvement for any G body car.

Well the yards around here will give you no deals. I'd rather spend the money and get a setup better than stock and I've the room with 17" wheels so I'm looking for a good kit.....

The '78-79 g body's used smaller wheel bearings. I don't think there's a kit for them. An 80 up spindle fits the same, except bearing size. FRANK

does that SSBC upgrade caliper really make a difference?

Use the "spindles" from the S10 & make a bracket to mount C5 Vette 13" rotors & 2 piston calipers.

are there drawings out there for doing this? how involved is it? reason I ask is I am looking to upgrade the brakes on my s10 in the near future but wanna do it on the cheap if I can. I might just end up with some decent pads/rotors/lines though.

62fairlane - If you buy the S10 ZQ8 front spindle/knuckle assemblies they will bolt onto your truck without any modifications. From the factory I think they are 11" rotors (maybe bigger, I will measure) with 2 piston calipers. Just doing that alone will be a big improvement over what you have. I had a guy at work make my adapter brackets. I didn't have any prints. Not much to it though. I think all 4 holes are in line with each other. I think the two outside holes are 14mmx1.5 threads & the inside are a 15mm hole. And the plate is about .5" thick. This is all from memory.
