I have an opportunity to buy a complete hydroboost setup off an '81 Cutlass Supreme that originally had a diesel engine.

Would there be any benefit to picking this up for my '87 Cutlass? I want to convert mine over to a hydroboost setup but didn't know if the older units would work as well as the new hydratech systems?

Can an older hydroboost unit be upgraded at all for better performance?

Thanks,

the effieciency is much higher on the newer design units, and will require less line pressure to create the same amount of force, requireing less horsepower to drive the pump. Just step up to the new unit of your going to do it, i bought mine for a 1 1/16 bore chevy master cylinder for $500 for a complete kit ready to install, well worth it.

Those old hydroboost units had a rust preventative feature that the new ones don't. Once warmed up, they tended to spray anything within 2 feet with power steering fluid. :lmao:

The older ones had an internal reservior, so they're smaller. But I would, and did, go with a newer type 2 style. All the newer ones look the same externally but have different bores inside. I used an Astro van unit which was one of the biggest ones I found at the wreckers.

I went with the newer set up too. Some later moder l10's have the hydroboost with the reserve canister (co2) I think....
Anyways its alot cheaper for you and I being that we have the g chassis and they came with them from GM. Be sure to get the pedal because some of the diameters are different on the brake pedal stud. I did a 84 GN hydroboost on my malibu. Have yet to use it but mabye in the next 6 months.
