That is about it for now. Now that the cage is just about done I can start on fitting the t56 and the LS6.

Looks like a fun little project. I like how the cage is tucked up in the car, so that you can hardly see it.

Yeah for my first cage I am happy how it came out. I used a JD2 bender to do all the bending.

I used to look at these cages and think, Oh a few pieces of tubing and a bender and Voila! After getting the bender, etc. I learned different. Very nice cage, looks to fit really well.

Yeah this is the same car. The last picture was taken last weekend, I am hoping to stab the LS6 in it in the next few weeks.

An interesting note about this car is that those first few pictures are not only the first time I saw this car but was also the first time the previous owner had seen the car in more than 10 years. He couldn't even find the keys to the storage unit for a few weeks before we went to meet him over there. The only reason we got a hold of this car was because a friend of ours that owned a concrete company was pouring a new pad at this guys house and asked if any of the cars were for sale, the guy initially said no, but than said that he did have another car that he would get rid of. And that was this car. I actually found a 1989 Phoenix Suns season ticket tucked up under the seat!!! Those finds are the best! :)

Ummmm I don't think so :). But thank you for the complement!!! I have got about 100-150 hours in the cage to get it this far. While I probably will do other one for my 65 Corvair i'm not looking forward to it!

cage looks good, nice fit. Will this car be more like your dads?

PhillipM
11-24-2006, 02:19 PM
Umm.. yes and no. I stole the old LS6 that came out of his car, and I also copied his cage design almost right down to the T. The overall theme that he was going for was more of a late model performance by using the Due front end and the Dana 44 rear, along with now, the LS7. What I am really going for is to put up older based technology like solid axle w/ traction bars; updated global west front suspension with the updated steeringbox. I will be using 15" minilite wheels and basically stock "style" brakes front and rear. I may upgrade the rears to aluminum finned 11" drums but I am not sure yet. You can see that I'm even going to run long wheel studs for the right look:) From a distance I really want this car to look period. But as you get closer you will see the entire drivetrain has been updated. Will it be quicker around the roadcoarse than his? I don't know. A smaller course probably yes but as the straight aways get longer probably no. The other reason I don't want to follow in his footsteps is MONEY. I don't have the resources that he does!! But I do love the way his car came out. My dad always seems to pull of something that I originally looked at him and said that will never work and look good at the same time. I think that my ultimate goal with this car is to run the Silver State in the 100-110 mph class. Nothing too crazy if I like it I will probably build my Corvair to go faster. This will get my feet wet and see what it is like.

Thank your for the complements guys. I have only worked on the car a little bit over the last few weeks because I had finals to attend to which went well. I graduated from ASU with my last day of school being last wednesday!! I will try to remember to snap some shots of the rear bars but they come down through the package tray and land right on the rear subframe. I plan to basically make a cradle that will go through the floor and weld to the rear subframe to reinforce the top plate. And yes this is the very first time I have ever touched a bender or designed/copied my dads :) cage.

Unfortunatly I won't be able to work on the car for a while because I am currently now living in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. But I will certainly update when I get back home and started on the car again later this year.
PS If you liked his car in 04, you should see it now with the LS7. Its crazy.

Well holy crap… I can’t believe this car is seeing the light of day! After a few years of being on the back burner I have finally found the time to get this thing out. A lot of things have happened that have impeded my working on this car but I am now back on it! We have moved into our new shop and below are the first pictures of the car off of my body cart in 3 years. We also got the motor out and installed the Front Runner system on it. At the moment we are fighting the transmission not wanting to go on the motor. I also recently picked the car up from having the roll cage welded in for me by a professional. Dang if feels good to be moving forward on this car again.

Well after a rough couple of days trying to install my new D&D T56 I had some help come over and learned that I was using the wrong roller pilot bearing… So alas the trans has found a new home and is mated to the engine. While I was working on that part of the car I thought that I would install my new ATS transmission mount. Only to learn that it wasn’t designed around lowered body mounts. But, as with every car that we seem to build it wasn’t anything the mushroom tip on the air hammer couldn’t take care of. I was able to “clearance” the floor just enough to give me the room I needed. I was also wearing about 5 pounds of sand by the time I was done with the air hammer! Guess I didn’t quite get it all out after the blaster! Tonight I plan to slide the motor in and begin to modify the tunnel to house this package.

mdprovee- Thanks for the compliment.. That is the first cage I have ever built. Was a lot of work but totally worth it.

------------------------

Well it was a pretty good weekend. I was able to work on the car Friday night and again on Sunday. Friday we slipped the engine and trans into the car and learned that lowered body mounts make this swap a little bit tougher. To get the ATS transmission cross member in there I had to cut out the humps on either side of the tunnel to make room for the new mount. We also had to cut the top of the tunnel off and raise it about 1 inch to give the proper clearance. I also mounted my e-brake on some plate to spread the load out. I am thinking of lengthening the handle which explains why it is sitting back a little bit. Plus I am about 6-4 with shoes on and have to move my seats 4 inches back from stock just to drive these cars comfortably. Well that is it for now. I am headed to the mid-west this weekend for a wedding so I won’t be able to get to the car until the week after. Bummer.

What the specs on the LS6?

PhillipM
10-09-2008, 02:09 PM
It is a 2002 LS6 with a blueprinted oil pump, ARP rod bolts, Comp XR281HR Cam, ATS oil pan, and I am running a stock computer. I'm also using Stainless Works headers and ATS motor mounts. I'm not sure how much power it is going to make but I think high 400 should be about right for that cam.

Well I didn’t work on the ZBeater very much this weekend but the time I did spend on it was a rewarding escape from doing other things. We named this car ZBeater a long time ago and like many projects the goal has changed slightly but the name has not. This past weekend I extended my Lokar emergency brake handle to something a man older than 5 years can grab onto. I used 1” .120 wall tubing to extend the handle a total of 8 inches. At first I thought the 1” tubing was going to be to large but in the end it worked out perfect and feels good in the palm. The inside of these things is very basic and includes all thread and a spring with a few retainers. I went down to Ace hardware and bought a couple new springs and a longer piece of all thread to make everything longer. The total project really only took about an hour, and that included riding my bicycle over to Ace! I have included another before picture for reference. Moving on to the A/C system I made a couple new brackets so that I wouldn’t have a bolt through the firewall and also so I would have more room to route my hoses after the dash is back on it. I welded a tab onto the roll cage on the right hand side and just moved the mounting screws. I will fill the old holes with some 3M glue. The bracket in the back of the unit now goes straight up and bolts in through the cowl area. Well that was really it for Sunday. Tonight I plan to weld the dash back in the car.

Thank you for the compliment! I have about 7 months to finish the car. And seeing as how I really only work on it about 2 days a week that is about 56 days to finish. I'm sure as we start to get really close I will have to work a few more than 2 days a week, and at that it is really more like 1.5 days a week. But we will get it ready for Power Tour. This car will make it!

Got a little more work done on Sunday.. The seat and the harness bar are now mounted and tacked in place. I am waiting on some parts for my welder so I am holding off the final welds untill I get them. I thought I would support local businesses and order it from the welding shop but was quickley reminded why you don't do that. First by the price and second by the rediculous wait I am going through. But I had to pre-pay for them so I guess I will continue to wait. I also need to call Mark at Arizen seats, as you can see my seat doesn't sit level and that's becuase one of the sliders is thicker than the other.. Weird. Here are a few pics of the progress.. Yes it's a real Z/28. It was missing the engine and transmission, plus, I'm not the build it original type of guy.

As for the seat issue for some reason my original seat pans are not level in the car. So I went ahead and spaced up the rear outer part of the bracket and everything seems to be happier in that department. Last night I got the drivers side removable door bar installed and tomorrow night I will get the passenger side built and mounted. I am using these to make my bar removable, they are from Kartek.

Thank you guys for the compliments!

I have not gotten done as much as I would have liked to this past week but I guess that’s how it goes. I would say I have about 20 to 25 hours total into the cross brace above the engine but I am really happy with how it has turned out. The fit is exceptional and the bolts line up without any persuasion needed. Along with the cross brace I got the door bars finished up and they come in and out with just a little bit of help from a soft mallet. I also received some loooong awaited parts including a header from Stainless Works and an ATS/Lee steering box. I am happy to report that using these headers with the ATS engine mounts does fit a 600 series steering box without modification. Stainless Works may have changed their design slightly because I have plenty of room unlike earlier versions of this header. Here are a few pictures..

Yeah Scott over at Stainless Works said that this drivers side header is like their 3rd or 4th redesign. The passanger side is and older design from a pair that we bought years ago. Has a thinner flange and hangs about .25" lower than the new design. Doesn't seem like much till the car is sittin low. Then you can see the difference.

So I guess I’m at this stage in my project where aligning sheet metal either drives you to produce a piece of work that you will admire for years to come, or, it drives you literally insane. I am not sure where I am at with that question but after an entire weekend of rust repair and panel fitment on my second driver’s fender and trunk lid these pieces seem to be fitting better. Before I started putting this car back together my Dad and I triple and quadruple checked that the sub-frame was straight. Not only by it’s self but installed in the car because it is for all intensive purposes not removable anymore. So now coming down to installing the sheet metal it has proven necessary that the fenders needed a push here and a tug there to get the gaps non pinky compliant… Meaning I don’t want to be able to slip my pinky in them like some cars that we all see now and again. The only aftermarket piece on the car is this hood. And already it is giving me a run. We need to slot the holes in the hinges to allow a little more adjustability because although we have got it straight it needs to slide over to the drivers side about 1/8”. That doesn’t sound like a lot but I’m learning that just that little bit makes a difference. I also got a little work done around the inner fender wells closing out the notch around the roll cage. That’s all for today, thanks for looking.

Hey Mark!

The original color of the car was blue with white stripes. I just got a call from my buddy Scott last night and was updated that everything but the hood and a few spots on the passenger fender and door are blocked out for final prime. Maybe this thing will make it on Power Tour! hahaha

Wow Phil, its been awhile. Coming along very nicely!

I had forgotten about your car, but sure am glad its back on track. I liked your cage layout so much i copied some of it (with some variants in the rear cause its a 'vert) but the front is looking very much alike. So much so, i was looking at your inner fender pics and remembered i have to notch mine too just the same! (they are on their way as of right now) Lol!!! Tell me, anything else i forgot??? Lol!

Why did you have the tail panel lines filled tough....Its a no-no in my book, but hey, to each its own. Maybe a reason other than taste?

keep it up man! Great work!

Lead.

Here is what your inspiration did in mine...I really liked how the front down bars we're close to the inner fenders, so;

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/DSC08266-1.jpg

Its quite ahead of these pics show now, the whole front susp is on and the sub-frame and firewall are filled and painted too as is the underside of the car, waiting on body panels on order (doors, inner-fenders and other front panels)....Moving slowly too! :crying: I moved from my 19-20" forgelines and the PT style back to street machine look (30x13.5 ET street) for now tough, sold everything PT and now all wondering again...Damn it! I need 2 cars!!!

[quote=Leadfoot1;509368]Why did you have the tail panel lines filled tough....Its a no-no in my book, but hey, to each its own. Maybe a reason other than taste?quote]

Well I actually filled them in for three reasons. First, I actually like the smooth touch on the rear. I think it is just enough to make a difference but most wouldn't really notice. And second, that was the first quater panel that I have ever done and I really cut and welded it without much experience. It was just a lot easier for me at the time to smooth it in then to recreate the joint. And third, the drivers side gap on the lower rear valance was so wide I could fit a 1/4 in piece of round stock in there and still have room to weld it up and metal finish it. My car was in a pretty good accident at some point in its life and that is probably when that body gap was widened. As for the inner fenderwells you will definitely need to notch them. It's not too difficult. Now you just need a cross over brace that unbolts and you will have that front section done! Haha

Yeah I knew someone would nail me on that.. If I weld that in then I won't be able to install my back seat as it wont fit through the holes.. Or if it does I'm a dufus cause I could barley get it in there now! I figure I could TIG one in later if I need it for an event.. We'll see.

So I spoke with Vintage Air and apparently they can convert my sure fit a/c system to hook up to their stream line bulkheads that pass through the fire wall. So the other night I cut out a piece of the fire wall that I had drilled for the tubes to pass through and welded in a new piece of sheet metal that will house the Streamline bulkhead.. Nothing like creating a little more body work for the body man.. Sorry dude!!

Thank you guys for the kind words!

WELL,

It has been a long time coming but we have finally moved the car to where we can continue to work on it. Some may recognize that the car now resides in our old shop that we used to work out of. It is here that we are going to build a home grown paint booth and finish painting the car. Last Sunday we cleared out what seemed like 50 copy machines that had acumulated in this room to make room for more important things... like cars! Scott finished prepping the cage and shot it in GM Recon black for me. The paint is thinner than I remember so tonight we are going to shoot a second coat on the entire thing. After that we will begin masking off the interior and preparing to paint. I have attached a few photos that I snapped last night of the cage and hope to have better/more pictures this weekend!
