      Killing Chrome!!!

How do you guys get rid of chrome? Bumpers, interior parts, etc? I want flat or satin black for my interior parts, possibly body color for my bumpers. TIA,

Hi Vince, I have access to a media blaster, so that is not a problem. I will start with some small interior parts, like turn signal and tilt levers, and others.

What do you recommend I coat/paint the parts with? I am trying to black out my interior as much as possible.

For the real metal parts, powder coat them. The eastwood kit works very well.

Catalyzed enamal with a gloss reducer in it works very nicely when sprayed over etching primer.

If you need to spray bomb something, use PJ1 Fast Black "Engine & Case Paint" in Satin Black. The stuff takes a day or so to get totally hard, but you can't beat it for durability (when compared to other out of the can stuff). You can usually find it in a motorcycle shop, great stuff.

If you are going body color on the bumpers hit them with an 80 grit disc on a D/A with a soft pad. Rough them up real good, wipe them with degreaser and spray them with a self-etching primer like Duponts Vari-Prime. This will get a couple of heavy coats of 2 part epoxy. If no body work is needed I'll topcoat over the epoxy. I've never had a lifting or peeling issue using this method. Of course powder coating doesn't need the primer but the sanding method works well for that also.
As long as the chrome is good (not peeling) it really doesn't have to come off as long as you get it prepped correctly.

For bumpers, you might consider picking up fiberglass replicas ... then paint as desired.

For other stuff, I did the Mark method: d/a with 80 (or 100), spray with etching primer, then topcoat.

I know THAT feeling... the words 13years constantly go through my head. That's OK though as there is little else in there to worry about.
