18x11's on a 67 Chevelle

What is the widest wheel and tire combo I can run on the rear of a 67 Chevelle. I would like to put 18x11's with a 295-35-18 or 335-30-18. Is this possible for a stock susp. car? Thanks guys for the help. Cory

Corey,
Generally a 10" wide wheel is about as big as you can go without mods. The rear wheelwells on my 67 el camino are 12" wide inner wheelhouse to outer wheel lip. You can cut the outer wheel lip some but watch for the outer wheelhouse as it comes in about as much as the lip just above the lip. The lower the car sits the less room you will have. Take alot of measurements to see how much room your car has to see if the larger wheels will fit. I'm not sure they will fit without modifications. Good luck.

You are going to have trouble with anything wider than 9.5", unless you're willing to do some cutting.

I have 9.5" rears w/ 5.625" BS on my '66 running 275/17 rubber. There may be room to go to 295's (there's some room inboard toward the trailing arm) but it would be tight and not allow much room for movement under dynamic driving conditions. Don't see any way a 335 would go without significant mods.

Sounds obvious but make sure you have your suspension and brake package finalized first as those obviously impact where your wheel mounting surfaces are. The Bear package I decided to go with sometime after buying the wheels moved the mounting point out at least 1/4" per side. I had to roll the fender lips to get the needed clearance.

There is a guy on TC with 11 inch wheels. Whe says he has no issues, not tubed either.

Edit: his car is a newer chevelle, I think we have more room that you guyz.

Sorry,a 10" wide wheel on a 66-67 is about it.
68-72's have larger wheelwells and can handle a 11" wide wheel.

What Clint said. You'll have to be perfect to fit a 10" wheel under the back of a 66-67 Chevelle. Even a 285/40/17 on a 17 x 9.5 is tight under a 66/67, and does rub a little when you really flex the rear end like going into a steep parking lot entrance at an angle. You could probably squeak a 10" wheel and a 285 or 295 18" tire under a 66/67 if you trim/roll the fender lip and pound out and flatten the bead in the inner wheelhouse just above the fender lip.

You'll have to measure YOUR car since an 11" wheel is at the ragged edge of what fits... but assuming you have a stock width rear end typically about 6-6.5" of backspace is required to fit an 11" wheel under a 68-72. I run 17 x 11 with 285/40/17, 6.5" backspace, with no cutting needed. About 5/8-3/4" of room to the inside and the outside.

I have a 66 El Camino with 18x10 and 295/40/18 Nittos. The only mods I made were trimming the fender lip and rolling what was left of it. I have plenty of room on either side of the sidewall. The backspace is 5.5". I can send or post pics when I get home if you're interested. There's also some pics in my PT Garage.

A 18x10 is actully a 11 wide wheel,so if you go with an 11 wide it will be a 12 wide.

Hot66ss, I was thinking about moving to 305/35/18's because I'm starting to get tired of the look of the tall 295/45 (I made a typo above, they're 45 series, not 40) I'm currently running. If you go this route let me know how it all fits. I think the 305 will fit fine but haven't tried it yet.
