Gold coat/Zinc coat... where to get it done?

Hey guys, I have my window hardware pulled out of the doors on the '68 camaro. I wanted to send it somewhere that can dip this stuff, clean it up and zinc/gold coat it. Not sure what else you call it. Anyway, just wonder if there is any good places to get this done and about how much it costs to do so?

      Thanks
      Buddy P

I have no idea where you can do it in your area, but I like the zink coating best and it keeps up very well.

Check with your local plating shops. If none, should be one in Indy or Detroit that can. Cost here runs about $4 per pound.

I had all my pieces electroless nickel plated. They do yellow zinc as well.

Cad plating is another option you might explore as well.

A different material. Cad or Cadmium is a anode plating. It's the gold/tan mottled stuff you see on a lot of aircraft hardware. It is intended to be used in dissimilar metals applications (bolting an aluminum or magnesium thing to a steel thing). Essentially, the Cad is the material with the highest electrical potential so it gives up it's electrons first (corrodes) and mitigates the corrosion of the steel or aluminum.

I believe the gold/green/tan finish on aircraft aluminum is Alodine, a hex chrome conversion coat, not a plated finish.

Cad is an alternative to zinc and was factory finish on brake boosters and other hardware. It can be silver or yellow if an additional hex chrome process is done after plating. Cad is a little better sacrificial coating than zinc, but is much more toxic and has been outlawed in most places. I deal with a place in Dayton Ohio that does both zinc and cad and will also do yellow zinc and yellow cad. They are also very reasonable: B-N Plating, 937.228.2963.

I have the Caswell kit. If you're only doing rotors have someone else do it.

The gold on cad or zinc is an irridite that allows paint to adhere to the plated part as alodine does for aluminum. original parts were clear (referred to as silver). IF you cad or zinc plate the assemblies, have them baked to removed embrittlement from the springs. If not, you might get a suprise when you stress the spring. Another alternative would be to tin flash.

"Alodine" is a process where you first acid etch the AL and then apply the Alodine conversion coating (chromate). Alodine is a strong oxidizer and does a chemical conversion of the surface (oxidizes it).

Alodine essentially creates a barrier to further corrosion. Sort of a man made version of the natural patina that develops on bronze or copper.

When this process is done (zinc, alodine, etc.) does it eat into rubber/plastic?

My previous career was in the Coast Guard and managed aircraft maintenance. Alodine and CAD plated hardware were daily use items.

I'm not especially smart, but I've been around a bit.

That looks to be galvanized. I need to look at some regs I have here to verify. Cad will eat plastics. Alodine won't.

I just want to get them redipped/coated or whatever. I figured zinc/gold coat would be the best thing to do?
