View Full Version : Rust repair question
I have some panels on my 67 firebird that need to be replaced. The floor will need a patch, both quarter skins and outer wheel housings that I know of, but I'm sure there will be more once I get into it. Anyway I'm going to try and do the work myself but I was wondering if there are any good instructional videos out there that would be helpful? Also I was planning on driving the car for a little while before I tear it down but do the repairs need to be done ASAP or will it be ok to drive it for alittle bit? One last thing, is it best to replace panels with all 4 wheels on the ground or with the frame on jackstands?

It's best to have it sitting on the ground this way the car will not sag or tweak. You can put it p on jackstands just put them where the suspension would be carrying the load. Such as the axle tubes or the balljoint/spring pocket. Without properly supporting the shell and cutting away some of the major panels it's possible to weaken it enough to create a real mess. I would also align the door best you can to have a good reference point when installing the 1/4s.

The quarter skins can be a bear if you have no experience with this type of work. PLAN first, and measure a whole bunch and mock up a bunch, study the new panel for differences/similarities. then you can begin the cutting. Cutting too little is usually o.k., overcutting makes for a lot of fabrication to do in addition to the quarter panel replacement.
