2nd gen F-bodywork

Hey all,
I am looking to do a litte patch-up bodywork to the TA to hold me over until I can afford a full subframe-off.
I have noticed a small crack 1-2" long in the metal on the pillar next to the driver's side window, just below the t-top. A buddy said it was "metal fatigue", and that the whole area would have to be cut out and new metal welded into place.
Is this true, or could the crack be welded up? Is a crack in this area an indication of more serious problems? (The car has seen some healthy bang-ups in the past)

Also, good sources for door parts? My doors rattle like a coffee can full of marbles on the highway.:smoke:

Well, it could be a sign of bigger problems, or it could just be the typical cracks form hard livin'! My 73 had a crack running from the top aft corner of door glass about 1-1.5" on both sides of the car. I welded it up and went on with it. It never came back while I owned it but I never drove it hard either! I hope that some subframe connectors would help alleviate that problem. I have seen numerous other 2nd gens with the same problem.

As for noisy doors, just replace all the normal wera and tear items such as window guides, etc. Usually that will quiet things down some. You can even add some sound deadener to the doors. That will help too.

If it's right at the top of the window going backwards that's where mine had a crack. The roof panel seam is right there. GM only put 3 spot welds per side to hold the roof on there. So with the flexing it cracks the factory lead or any plastic filler put over it.

Fix is to take out the factory lead and weld the seam solid.The re lead over it.

My 73 had the same cracks where the panels meet at the roofline. When I redid it and put new quarters on we welded them up tight. Haven't cracked since (~ 20 years) and it gets driven hard.
