What size pistons do the C6 Z06 calipers have?

Does anyone have a template of them for mockup?

I don't have that info for you, but make sure you know what you are getting into with those calipers. They aren't all they are cracked up to be.

Not to say they wont work, in fact they'll work great, but there are other choices out there that may work better for you if you haven't already bought them yet (and I'm assuming you haven't).

Why is that? What are the downsides of them other than expensive pads?

Even though those calipers are of a "monoblock" design, they aren't as stiff as you might think. Performance Friction's 2-piece caliper is stiffer than the Corvette monoblock. Heck, they're 4-piston caliper outperforms the Z06 caliper in almost every way.

The worst thing about those calipers is the uneven pad wear. Since each pad moves seperately, they wear at different rates. This wouldn't be that big of a deal if the pads weren't $100 PER WHEEL, and the only compound available isn't very good. So at this point, you're stuck with a crummy pad compound that wont wear evenly.

I'm making this sound worse than it really is, but those are the downsides. If your car is going to see some heavy track duty, I'd SERIOUSLY consider different calipers. If it's a street/lapping day type deal, then they'll work great. And the price (minus pads) is right.

I can get you a template if you want. What do you need?

Template for mouting would be great. Im not sure if the z06's would clear my wheels or not. Front, and rears would be great. Im sure would help out a lot of members.

A template similar to what stoptech has on their website for front and rear woud be great.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Depends on the hurricane.

Definately food for thought. I remember a thread over at Corvette Forums where one of the first things Lou Ghilotti (of LG Motorsports) did to his new Z06 was to dump the stock calipers for a set of Stoptechs. At the time pad availability was his primary concern-- but he did mention pad wear and caliper flex as other reasons for the changeout.

I believe the pad compound availability issue is no longer an issue-- but correct me if I'm wrong.

Are the Z06 calipers good for stock? You bet. Are there better options out there? Yep. AP Racing, CNC Brakes, The Brake Man, Stoptech, etc, all come to mind. However you will pay more, and for hard street/casual track day abuse the C6 Z06 calipers will be plenty adequate.

and the only compound available isn't very good.

Except for not, Im sticking with stockers since my car will be no track whore but spend about 10 seconds on corvetteforum and theese came up.

I will have my calipers tomm, i can put them on the rotors and get you a pretty good estimate if that will help?

I think that will help. Exact measurements mounted of course would be ideal, but any bit helps. I wonder how compareable they are to the 14" 6 piston set up from stoptech?

Even just putting the calipers on the rotors, it should give us an idea how far the calipers stick out from the mouting surface. On my 18's, inside measures 16 1/4, so roughly 8" from the centerpoint of the wheel. That should clear diameter wise.

Pictures showing the measurements would be fantastic as well.

And don't forget to measure the pistons.

Well i missed the ups man on friday so hopefully someone will be home tommarow to get them. I dont have anything more accurate than a ruler for the pistons though...

Well I got them in, as best I can measure the pistons are about 1 1/4" however it was a bitch to get that ruler in there and get a point to go off of so dont do anything serious with those measurements.

Here is a pic of a square set on the face of the caliper, as you can see its pretty freakin huge, and the width is where the interference problems will arise unless you are trying to run 17" wheels...

Argh! Now that you went and posted those pics... I drooled on my keyboard and shorted the thing out! :jump:

I can't wait to get back on my car!

Thanks a ton man. Any idea how much clearance diameter wise to clear the caliper? Looks like Im gonna need a slight spacer to clear the face. Looks to be 1 5/8" wide, and I've only got 1 9/16"

ill try and get a more complete set of measurements after work today.

Ilovefirstgens,

Care to share where you bought those and for how much?

I'm going to try and look at gmpartsdirect...Hope i can find the parts #'s.

That is one killer set up! Are your rotors GM's?

What bracket are you using to mount them?

What spindle? Would it clear say, a Heidts 2" dropped?

Thanks man,

Lead.

Just FYI, you can download front and rear wheel fitment templates for the C6 Z06 brakes from the KORE3 site if you're interested.

http://www.kore3.com/tech.php#fitment_templates

The pistons measure 32mm [1.26"] outside dimension for both the front and rear calipers. I haven't pulled the pistons yet to get a more accurate measurement but that will at least get you in the ball park for calculating overall piston area.

Pad area is aproximately 3.0 square inches per pad when new and increase with wear due to the leading and trailing edge chamfers. OE pad friction material thickness is ~.40". Pads are the same front and rear with the only difference being quantity required.

Weights for individual components are as follows:

C6 Z06 Rear Caliper w/pins, w/o pads = 3.76 kg [8.30 lb] each
C6 Z06 Front Caliper w/pins, w/o pads = 4.13 kg [9.10 lb] each
C6 Z06 Pad = .15 kg [.32 lb] each (1 pad per piston)

As is evident by the previous posts and our fitment template, radial clearance will be a much lesser issue than face clearance. Hopefully this helps anyone looking for info on the C6 Z06 components.

Hey, Wait a minute!

Tobin from Kore3?

I saw your name on another thread about fitting CTS-V's on a 442...

I'm trying to get info on fitting my (bought this morning-complete C6-Z06 set up for 1495$ New from fred Beans.) and left 2 messages per e-mail on your site without any anwsers!

You guy's busy?? :)

Please let me know if you have the brackets to fit that set up on my car! (1969 Camaro Convertible-stock front spindle and 12 bolt rear)

Hope you can help! Parts coming in.

Thanks in advance!!!
