I think I am about to order a set of 18" Coys C-5 wheels. http://www.coyswheel.com/coys.html Has anyone used these and how do you like them? Did they ship promptly?
Thanks, Frank.

I hear great things. I haven't personally used them but do a search for Coy's on our site and you'll find lots of satisfied customers. I plan to use em too.

I just got my two front wheels yesterday for a 56' Chevy were finishing up. I did a staggard set up, 18's and 20's. The 20's were shipped right away. They told me the fronts would be 2 weeks.

I should have them mounted and on the car this week. :woot: :yeah:

I have had a lot of issues getting some stuff back. Long story short. I went to have my wheels mounted and the tire place bent one of the lips on one of my 17x10s. It took Coys almost three months and me getting kicked out of the tire place to get my wheel back. In the process one of my center caps got lost. I have been told now for almost two months that they would send it. I finally had to order a set from Intro at $20 bucks a pop.

On a side note when I ordered the wheels back in Jan it took three weeks to get them, I was really happy with their service up until my wheel got bent. I was told that the issue with getting the wheel back was that they couldn't find a hoop to replace my bent one with.

Thats just my 2cents tho. I have heard that there is a place Indianapolis, IN that sells Coys wheels and that people have had good luck with them.

Lower90, is your bent wheel a coys or another brand?

It's a Intro wheel, that Intro built for Coys to sell. I have never seen the wheel on Intro's website.

From what I can gather, Coy's doesnt build wheels. They buy/contract other companies to build wheels for them. There has been a talk on other forums that the Coys C5 are really Boyd Smoothie 2s, with a Coys logo on the center cap.

yes they dont make the wheels they are contracted.....i think thats why it tooks so long for my wheels to be sent out beacuse the 20" c5s werent ready yet i think?????

oddly enough most wheel companies use this model. Wheels are made by MHT or some other big company to specs and designs for whoever wants them. (foose pops right to mind) It's just the easyest cheapest way to get it done.

Three piece wheels are different, and usually cast and forged right there, hence the huge price difference. Coy's turn around of 4 weeks sounds ok to me. Some places take months.

Oh. and the claim that coy's are boyd smoothie IIs? thats crap.

note the peaking on the spokes of the smoothie and the cast area around the lug nuts. Totally different.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Now a real case could almost be made that coy's copied TTIIs.. almost.
note the peaking of the spokes near the bolt circle in the middle as compared to the softer radius on the coy's model.
Subtle but diffrent enough.

there's no question they are real close to each other. but the lip is different, "fat lip" style. I gotta say i like the coy's interpitation best. And the 200 per wheel price aint too shabby either. (for the 18x7s Im getting)

I did order the wheels today [my birthday]. They assured me that they had them in stock and will be shipped Friday. It will take a couple of days to get and install my tires. I had them also supply my BFG g-force T/A KDW2 tires so they will be sent mounted and balanced. I paid a little more for the tires but I like that idea in case there are any issues. No one can blame anyone else. $1650 total including frieght.
I'm told that I should have them next thurs. :3gears:
I did ask where they were made. They are they're own design and are made for them by an off shore manufacturer [like everything else].

I talked to Coys last tuesday and was told the owner had just finished a meeting with their supplier from China.I was told they wouldn't have my wheels (18x9.5 rear) for 2.5 weeks and I wouldn't have them for another week after that. If I didn't like look so much I'd order something else. Larry

The reason why I would NEVER buy these.

Do you really want to risk your car and your life with some madeinchina crap?

I quite agree with the made in china crap and I hate supporting them but any made in north america stuff is just way out of my comfort zone price wise. Plus in the past many items I have purchased assuming they were north american made were off shore after all. Also, does anyone have any experience with these types of components failing? To be legal to be sold on our highways, we do have the protection of them being d.o.t. approved for safety I should hope.

You are correct. The only "quality" issue I know of that is made in china related is the powdercoating coming off of Foose brand wheels. (could have been a bad batch) but Foose isn't known for slapping his name on crap. I trust them enough. If and when I go into the performance part business as we plan to, we'll follow the same model and offer cool wheels, made in china fairly priced.

The DOT does not test each wheel. They approve the design with the specified material and manufacturing process. It is then up to the manufactures QC to determine if the wheel meets spec. QC is the biggest problem with PRC stuff.

Im sure not, there's plenty of people out there that like stuff made in the usa. Sadly, the costs involved keep parts out of reach for the average or entry level enthusiasts. And truely thats where the money is. Just a fact of business in this day and age im afraid.

Taiwan is a politically much less objectionable supplier, have you checked into sourcing from there?

I too am thinking of buying the Coy's (grey centers that I will paint satin black).

My only issue is that they do not make a 5" BS 18x* wheel only a 4.75".

I guess I will have to call them.

Anyone ever run a 4.75" front?

brickyard, I see where they make a 4.5, 5, 5.5 b.s in 18" depending on the width. I don't see any 4.75 in 18".

For those of you that have purchased a set of COYS or are going to order a set, which style of the c-5's are you going with? Polished, chrome, or the grey centers? just curious. Just taking a quick look at the gallery on the COYS website, IMO I think the chrome version look kinda odd, I like the polished versions myself, also love the grey centers on the correct colored car, maybe black or silver. late.

weird......anyway

i have polishes c-5's.....n those look very very dull in dark places.....not like weld wheels how they still have a shimmer when its darker....... but if u let the light hit those COys...omg..... the look like chrome...... i have seen the chrome c5s in person (kinda upset me beacuse i thought i was gonna be the only one with those wheels in my area) an those are very very bright......

TonyL
06-30-2006, 07:07 AM
Its the shortening of the words he's talking about the N instead of "and" and the u instead of "you". Plus we like to use punctuation around here too. you cant be bothered with typing out a three letter word, but you can type six periods in a row instead of one? He's just asking you to use proper spelling and grammer, it's in the rules.

Not to get into heated debate but? I have to agree with the made in China deal in regards to shopping elsewhere. The problem with Americans is we do not care who we do business with if the price is dirt cheap. I guess they do not realize the US made prices are higher for the exact same reason. Does China make some good products? Yes, I guess so but I would rather spend a little more knowing it was made with quailty US hands.

The China quick sell products are the biggest problem we have today with the trade industry. Didn't Edelbrock have huge problems with the copies of their manifolds? Greed is the sole motive. Take a US made product, bring it over to China and have them bid to copy 95% of it and sell it to compete against the US counterpart. Not always, but there may be quality control reasons they cost more here. I do believe the Boyd confusion was they were marketed as Boyd wheels on Ebay when they first hit our shores.

Buy American as the job you save might be your own!!! Also last I checked we are at war and need the cash flow. Although the parts might be made in the USA but the accounting dept will be in India. Just my 2 cents.

I don't know if you've checked out Newstalgia Wheels, but in the past 6 months I've bought two sets of wheels w/ tires mounted from them and they are a first class act. Shipping was prompt and prices were great. In fact, if you buy your wheels and tires from them as a set, mounting, balancing, and shipping are free. However, proper fitment is up to you. If the combo you order doesn't fit right, I don't know what they'll do for you. Ask for Howard.

This pic of my '65 has 18x7's 4.5 backspace.
I will try and post a better pic.
I would prefer 8's but then there is too much interferance on the fronts at full lock steering. I want all 4 wheels to match. Bfg kdw's, mono leaf front, solid bushings and urethane everywhere, Howe long stud upper ball joints, tubular adjustable upper control arms, Bilstiens, Camaro front spoiler, it handle's great.

VBP monosring kit. I haven't used the rear mono yet because every car I have been in with it has been bouncy. No good.
No squeaks from the urethane yet but I only have them on the lowers. The uppers are solid bushings from http://www.scandc.com/ included with they're control arms. At this point I would try to find del-a-lum lower control arm bushings. I did not know about them when I installed my urethanes.
The wheel spokes on my car are "Gunmetal" colour. It does not show up well on the pic. I would perfer a semi gloss black but that is what http://www.coyswheel.com/ has.

It's not the ATS spindles rather the C5 caliper offset. They are farther outboard than the typical big brake setup for a stock spindle. Touring Classics has templates on their site. I am super interested to know if these wheels will clear the calipers. -eric

Mine are 18x9.5 and 17x4.5 I belive they were 5.5 on the rear and 4.5 on the front.

Call James at Coys 801-812-2929.

He knows a lot about the fit of these. He really helped me figure out wat way to go.

I also have Touring Classic big brakes on mine and a Hotchkis total control system with a 2" drop.

I got great service from Tim, Must be a temporary setback.

BTW: It was very hard to get the tires onto these wheels compare to TT2's. What makes them look good has a backside aswell. The wide lip means there is a lot of distance before you can reach a "step" in the rim starting from the front. So you have to push the tire down a LOT to get it to go into the smaller part of the rim. It creates an angle on the tire during mounting that is so great that it's very hard to get the tire over the wheel.

If your tire machine has delrin(plastic) protectors on the clamps, I suggest setting the rim upside down, and the clamps over the rim for the mounting of the tires. The backside of these wheels have the step located very close to the edge so mounting the tire from the back is MUCH MUCH EASIER.

Actaully the "touring" in pro-touring, could be taken either way. This has been the debate forever, is a pro-toured car geared to be a reliable cruiser or race car? It'll never be settled. Either way, proportions are proportions, and some cars just look better with bigger wheels.

Received my Grey 18's from Tim at PRRC, tires being mounted today, should have it rolling by Saturday.

Just wanted to give credit to Tim for going to bat for me with the manufacturer after I made a mistake with the ordering :hammer: . He worked hard to make sure I got what I needed and that is extremely appreciated in this hobby! Looks like the offset in the rear is going to be perfect. Whew!! I'll post pictures when we get em mounted up. Interesting note, they changed the center cap logo from that red to a nice black and gray (which looks a lot better in my opinion), now i just need another two black and gray ones to match.

Or...Did anyone ever find out for sure whether the american racing TTII caps will fit on the coys? I could swear someone made some nicer ones than these, but can't find them now...

Those are 9.5" on the rear.

The guys at Coys have a perfect 18" setup for a non-minitubbed car. It is the same setup that TT has.
