What wheels are you guys/gals using with your AFX spindles? I am looking at getting wheels for my project to start mocking up the rear, and am wondering what my options were that have enough clearance for the front. Any help would be appreciated.

Ditto. All I need is to decide on wheels and I can get going with my brake and suspension parts.

Call out to Tito and the crew at ATS: Anything you can share as far as known setups that work for early f-bodys?

I know about the templates from T-Classics, but am looking for known compatible 18" wheels with that brake setup that I already have.

I have Kinesis wheels and measured before purchasing. I will have plenty of clearance left over with C5 six piston 13" Wilwoods.

I just ordered my AFX tall spindles today!

I have chrome Zenetti Fives which I just checked with the Touring Classics C5 Template. Looks like plenty of room. I have the TC Hybrid kit, but now I'm swapping the rotors out for the C5 ones

Anyhow, the Zenetti Fives I have are 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear.

If I remember right, I have the 20mm offset which for the front is a little more than a 5.5 inch backspace.

I can't wait to bolt on the new spindles!

With that much offset make sure you have the short steering arms. If not you may run into tierod to rim clearance issues.

yeah, I had the wheels all mounted up with the stock disk brakes and no issues with the steering arms. I do have the shortest arms which did rub when I tried some 16 inch wheels, but with 18's, seems like lots of room.

Great, I am glad you did not have an issue.

FWIW.... I asked & was told the AFX spindle would not work w/the Touring Classics 'hybrid' 13" C4 brakes & that 3.5" BS was the max (my info was based on a 78-up G-body).

Your right, they won't work with the Hybrid Kit. I am swapping the rotors from C4's to C5's and all will be good at that point. ( I had said that, didn't I ;P )

Once I've got it together, I'll probably sell my freshly turned down drum brake hubs, the TC caliper brackets and the C4 disks. I even had the hubs and disks zinc washed. ( The AFX Spindles weren't available when I started collecting all this... Well, it's only money. :( )

3.5 inch backspace? Well, I guess it depends really on the width of the rim. I think most 1st gen guys were running something like a 4.5 BS when using an 8 inch wheel. Not sure... The 5.5 BS is on an 8.5 inch wheel and seemed to fit well with the stock disks. Track width is supposed ot be the same with the AFX spindles. I did dial out the turning stops on the speedtech arms a bit with the stock spindle. But I like the overall fit.

I can only tell you guys what does not work well.
Torque Thrust II's are one of the problem wheels. As are any rim that uses a 17" outer with a 15 or 16 inch center will be a problem. Most 2 pc rims will work, as will any HRE, Fikse, Kenisis, ect.. My advice-
Find the brake system you want and can afford, then send a template to your wheel manufacturer, and have them double check.

C5 brake systems require quite a bit of spoke offset to clear the calipers, so measure. Then measure again. Then have a beer. Then check your measurements.

I can confirm (not that Tyler's word isn't good enough) that the AFX will not work with TC's C5 caliper/ C4 rotor hybrid kit. I have Billet Specialties 17x8 Rebels up front that use a wheel hoop very similar to the TTII. It's that damn step-down in the wheel hoop that cause the problems with 17" wheels.

I plan on running Budnik Fat Lip (Rocker, Ice, or Cobalts)17's. I think they will make them to fit the AFX w/ TC C5 kit. I hope to finish the subframe next month. I absolutely agree with Tyler's recommendation to get your set up and then measure, measure, measure..... Oh yeah, then order wheels.

I have 18x8" Budniks FL Teardrop style with 4.75" BS on order. Rears are 18x12's. Should be here any day. I had to change my original order with them to accept the larger offset needed for the C5 brakes. I just recevied the Baer Brakes I ordered for the AFX spindle.

that sounds like a very accurate statement except it lacks enough beer

so are you all saying that any TT2 wheel...wont work? If thats true...im am S.O.L.

They will work, but they typically require a spacer. We put a set of AFX spindles on Wickedmotorhead's 87 Grand National with a set of TT2 in 17" and it needed a 1/4" spacer to clear the caliper.

thats not bad. did his car require longer studs or was it ok with the 1/4" spacer?? I have 17x8 fronts with 4"bs..and i already have the SC&C stage 2 kit....the spindles would just add on to that.

I ordered Boyd's for mine 18x8 with 5" BS - on Noel's suggestion I asked Boyd to insure 1" caliper clearance on the wheels. You might give Noel a call.

Cool wheels guys but what about something that doesn't cost $1K+ per wheel? Anyone?

Well, on the complete other end of the spectrum, I'm running the good ol' Coys wheels with mine. They're about as affordable as you can go with an 18" wheel. Baer GT brakes.

You can pick any Intro wheel style and we can do it for quite a bit less than $1K per wheel. We have both 2 and 3 piece wheel designs.

Wow, this post is a blast from the past. I actually think I read a post on the first page that sited Jason and I from when we worked at Budnik!

Our Rushforth wheels can be built to fit around that set up without a problem. Caliper offset is not a problem, and inside diameter will clear too. Give us a call, we have new styles ready for the mills, here are a few we have already done for other customers:

I had the ATS spindles w/ C5 calipers and rotors before I ordered my wheels. I told Frank what I had and what diameter, width and backspace I needed and he took it from there. Everything fits like a glove...

I believe those are just an 18x7 with a 4 1/4" backspace, they may be an 18x8 though, I don't recall. You just have to use the flush mount valve stems with the big brakes since the valve stem is right in line with the caliper.

As for the customer service issue, I used Tim at PRRC before he stopped dealing with them so it was fine for me. Seems like most people have still had success in dealing with them, but keep in mind, there's a reason they're so affordable. Customer service may not be an area where they spend a lot of money...

PM sent, glad you like that wheel. It's called the "Rated X" and is finished there with a brushed and cleared center, and polished rim outer.
