Stip to old primer or to bare metal?

When I repaint my car would it be better to stip the paint to the original primer and prep from there or to strip to bare metal?

Bare Metal. It will be hard to stop at the primer anyways. Besides you need to see whats under the primer - good metal, rust, bondo what?

I just stripped my car down to bare metal and I am glad I did. I found a few rust spots but nothing too serious. It's good to have that piece of mind along with knowing what the body shop is going to have to deal with in terms of the quote you get!

Ive always heard nobody seals metal better than the factory since it is dipped rather than sprayed. but as these guys have said, it is difficult to stop at that primer, best off to get some por-15 stripper and start all new.

Always strip to bare metal if you have no idea whats under the paint. Our Mustang is the ultimate example. I have never seen so much crappy bodywork on a car in my life. So much newspaper and coat hangers in place of where real pieces were supposed to be. Here are 2 pics of my point. The first pic is what it looked like when we bought it. That front passenger fender looks good right?? Wait until you see what it looked like once we started poking around with a screwdriver and started removing paint. Thats just one section of the car. ALWAYS STRIP TO BARE METAL.

OUCH!... kinda looks like my quarter panels on the Camaro - there was close to 3/4" of bondo in some places. The quarters looked really good before "digging in" as well.

Oh yeah her entire mustang look(ed) like those pics above. Now we have replaced all most all of the sheetmetal on the Mustang. Both rear quarters, floor, passenger fender and other misc body pieces. Her quarter looked worse that that fender.
Here is an example of my 69 rear quarter after I started removing the paint when I got it.
