Your pictures is probably too big to be loaded onto the site as an avatar. Go find a site/program called "irfanview". With this program you can resize pictures/images. If you resize your picture to 640x1280 it should work fine as an avatar.
Looks like you kinda got it... this might work a little better though.
Bump, don't know if ol' boy saw it.

Imageshack should be providing some links after you upload your image. Can you post those up here?

Use
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/3228/dscf03077el5ea.jpg
as the path to your avatar. (since it likely has dots in place of some of the text, right-click it and choose Copy Shortcut)
Now if only I'd remembered where I had my old avatar stashed...

I used the moderator control panel, which doesn't help you much at all.
When I was trying to do it the normal way, I went to the User CP, chose Edit Avatar, and entered the URL above in the Avatar URL box. Make sure that you have the actual URL and not the chopped up one the way that vBulletin shortens it (right-click the shortened version and choose "Copy Shortcut").
Once you hit Save Changes, the new avatar should be in place.
