View Full Version : Touring Classics C-5 big brake kit
I wanted to plug Noel and http://www.touring-classics.com/ . I recently installed the Big Brake Kit on my 69 Camaro and the difference is nothing less than phenominal!
First, Noel is very helpful and knowledgeable concerning this kit. I contacted him several times with questions before I purchased and he was helpful in my decision.
I installed the kit with a little help from David @ Road Killer Kustoms. There were a couple of things I couldn't do, (machine the rear axles, weld the tabs for the new brake lines) but nearly everything can be done in your garage. The instructions are VERY detailed and should be read BEFORE you start putting the kit together. (don't ask me how I know this)
So, Noel is a great guy, the install is easy and the instructions are good, but do they work?
WOW! I don't have other aftermarket high performance brake systems to compare it to, but these are quite possibly the best brakes I have ever had on a vehicle!
I had the opportunity to take my car on Road Atlanta during the Year One Experience and the brakes were awesome! No fade, good feel, and they slow the car down from speed right now!
Thanks to Noel for putting the kit together and to David for the help with the install.
Pics to follow.

What do you mean that you can't machine the rear axles at home. How did you machine them by the way. :naughty: (Your secret is safe w/me)

I could explain it, but you wouldn't understand anyway! :slap:
I saw you and Chris Saturday. Going to the Cartersville show? Grill is looking good!
Larry, thanks for adding the pics!

Jim - I didn't see you at Cartersville? Where you there? I saw Steve (David did his silver 69 Nova) and he said that David was supposed to be coming over but I didn't see him either. Jeff (had the orange 69 that did laps with us at Year One) and his wife were getting there just as Kathy and I were leaving.
Yea I gotta get that grill done sometime soon! I've been busy getting this guest house built and I've actually been searching for a job again. In fact I have an interview this morning.

Thanks. The rims are Centerline Retro's. Not bad for the money, though they have gone up consideribly since I bought mine.

I have to concour with yall...that Noel is awsome...they helpped our 67 project out.....ALOT...
Very cool to talk to with a wealth of information, not tomention products that really work.
I didn't really mention fit and finish. All good! In fact, the brackets CNC machined brackets are beautiful and everything fit great. It's too bad you can't see those pieces!

You guys should get commissions, cause you have pretty much sold me on Touring Classics. 69rs, what are the specs on your wheels / tires? Did you have any trouble with rubbing or did you need any spacers?
Nice ride by the way...

My wheels are Centerline Retro's. They are 17x8 and 17x9.5 The problem with my particular wheel is that they didn't come in quarter inch backspace sizes, so I ended up using a spacer on the rear. The C-5 brake kit will not fit some wheels (TTII's for instance). For wheels like that, you would want the Hybrid kit.

69rs,
Thanks for the info. I think I will have to give them a call about their hybrid setup... I don't see much listed on it on their website. I still have a ways to go before I get to the brakes (patching or replacing a couple of quarters), but it doesn't hurt to plan ahead a little. If only these old cars weren't so hard on the wallet!

I haven't posted pics too much because, A) it looked like a 4 wheel drive, and 2) I am a computer moron!
Thanks for the compliment, but it isn't nearly as nice as yours.....yet!

The Hybrid kit just uses the smaller C-4 caliper so you can choose from a larger selection of wheels. They are hard on the wallet, which is why it took me so long to do the brakes, wheels and springs!

It uses the c5 caliper w/ c4 rotors
Ooops! Yeah, what he said. :here!:
An update-If you use the C-5 brake kit, paint the hat on the rotors or have them zinc washed. The rotors tend to rust. That has been my experience at least.

Ditto on Noel. He is a standup guy. I just got my C5 front kit for my ATX spindles today. Lookin' at those brakes and spindles makes me feel like a kid at Christmas!! Also, Noel really went out of his way to make sure I was getting the right braket for my 9" rear.

hey dhardison are those c5 or c4 rotors you have on your nova? i have a 69 nova with the c5 rotors and I'm told it will not work for me. i wanted to use a 05 zo6 rims 17x9.5 or 8.0 told that it would stick out to far.

They're C4 rotors with C5 calipers. The C5 rotors will work, but only with certain wheels. I already had TTIIs and the C5 wouldn't clear so I went with Touring-Classics "hybrid" kit.

Another kudos to Noel - one of the nicest guys I have ever dealt with, straight up guy. I order front and rear for 3 cars:
67 Camaro with C5 - 12 bolt
69 Camaro with AFX C5 and 9" ends
70 Chevelle with Hybrid - 12 bolt
Everything came labeled (all 438 pounds of it!) and very neatly packaged.
I would recommend Noel to anyone wanting to upgrade their brake system.

Great kit for the money! Just got my front/rear kit for my 69 camaro
along with hydroboost. Everything is high quality. I would recommend
Noel highly. Before going with him I called Precision and got alot
of different info and prices on the same parts depending on what salesmen I talked to.

All right - EVERYONE KNOWS Noel is great with the whole brake gig - But he can also hook you up with Budnik Wheels. I ordered a set of Four-Thirty Budniks - got a great price and they actually shipped EXACTLY when they were promised! Some day I will share the store on my Boyds - 4 months and still waiting - but that is another story for a different day.
By the way for anyone interested the finish on Budnik is awesome - very high quality wheels.

:twothumbs I also got my brakes from touring classics! This was a while back and I dealt with Jonathan Duke. Brakes still going strong.

My next project after I receive my 18" Billet Rallys is brakes. I have been contemplating Wilwood or C5 Kit from Touring Classics. From reading through the posts it seems that Touring Classic kits are preferred. Not only for the money, but for the customer service when ordering.
Hmmm... Seems like Touring Classics is the winner. LOL! :attn:

I am considering this kit but have a quick question.. If I have drum spindles I need to grind them down still, right?? The kit does not come with any spindles. Also, 69rs recommended painting the "hats" on the rotors - What is this? I am a newbie and have been studying disk brakes for a month or so and I am learning. I am about to start on my first 69 Camaro (a car I have wanted for 20 years) and would like to do some of the work myself. I am mechanically inclined and knew nothing about disc brakes before this but with these instructions could a newbie follow along and complete 90% of it? Thanks.

You will not have to do any grinding to the spindal itself. all you have to grind down is the diamater of the hub for the Brake rotor to clear and i think Noel can do this for you if you need. The kit is fairly strait forward and i would say it is a fairly easy kit to install. As far as painting the hats i think noel offers zinc coated rotors now. i would spend the extra money for this. The hat is the part of the rotor that would be raised if you where looking at it flat on the ground. I painted mine but was not 100% happy wish i would have got zinc coated.

Thanks mac71ss. The hat thing should have been a little more obvious to me I suppose. About the spindles, it is the upper mount hole on the drum spindle (which I have) that I was under the assumption had to be cut down so the bracket would mount flush which holds the calipers. The hub would have to be modified as well.
Like what is stated here about 2/3 the way down: http://www.pozziracing.com/brakes.htm#Converting_Drums_to_Discs
The upper bolt hole boss is 0.610" taller on the drum spindle than a factory disc spindle and needs to be cut down. Does this not apply to this kit for some reason? I hope so because this would be 1 less problem to deal with. Please pardon my ignorance on this subject. Thanks.

On my 67 I went with Speedtech caliper brackets, since I had not heard of Touring classics. I also sourced all my other parts myself, it took awhile, since I was learning as I was building. My point here is the brackets are probably made to bolt up to the spindles that you have, like mine did. It was a bolt on deal all the way through, except for machining the drum hubs.

That quote is referring to fitting OE GM 10" discs to a drum spindle in which case you would need to modify your drum spindle to look like a disc spindle. The better aftermarket kits design the offset into their brackets and provide a spacer with kits for the disc spindles which isn't necessary with the drum spindles. :woot:

What about a parking brake ?
Does the kit have a parking brake ?

If you visit Touring-Classic's site, you'll see that they use C4/4th gen LT1 F-body PBR rear calipers which have integral parking brake mechanisms. http://www.touring-classics.com/Rear-12.htm

I actually did try looking at the site , but the site ( or my computer ) wasn't working properly yesterday.
Thanks for the info.
I always like to get firsthand information from an actual user of a produst as well as the company if I can.

I installed Touring Classics Brakes on my 68 Camaro with a Hydroboost and it is a great package! Noel was alot of help.
Heres a spindle with the front caliper bracket installed - this is a Hybrid bracket.

did you have to use a washer to space out the bracket on the spindle or was it a disc brake spindle... ?
I recently installed new pads, though the originals weren't too bad. I replaced the stock pads with EBC red pads. They feel great, but I will know how good they work at RTTHIV! I'll update again after that!
The brakes worked great with the new pads! They stop very hard, yet smooth and controlled. I need to get my car to "go" as good as it will "whoa"!
