View Full Version : Rear Caliper placement? Front or Rear of axle?

I am currently working on building my rear axle and I have to weld on the brake caliper mounts next and I can mount them on the rear of the axle or on the front side. Any suggestions? Problems with one or the other? I have a R and a L side caliper and so they will one the same side of the axle and not staggered. I have not found any interference problems yet, so I don't see any problems with either side.
Just wondering if I am going to screw something up, or if I should just flip a coin.
Thanks.

Will both the bleeders end up on top?

Front will keep the weight inside the wheelbase.... and rear will move the weight behind. Although it isnt a-lot of weight, weight placement can be critical.
In a chassis with the majority of the weight over the front axle, my vote would be to place the calipers behind the axle..... keeping the bleeders straight up, if possible, and keeping in mind of how you parking brake (if used) cables will fit into the equation.
In reality, it comes down more to where you are going to place the shocks. Controlling the axle is more of a priority than which side to place the calipers on, IMHO.

Place them in front of the axle if you can, better for weight distribution as mentioned above. Also make sure your bleeders will be up top. To do mine, I had to mount the Baer caliper marked "L" on the right, and vice versa, which is no big deal. Also, the length of the e-brake cables pretty much determined where mine had to go.

Thanks guys. Yes, both bleeders will be pointed straight up. And I will have no e-brake associated with the calipers. I am going to a pinion mounted e-brake.
I like the ideas that you have about weight distribution. I just recieved my shock/springs today. I will have to mock everything up and go from there.
Thanks.
