As promised, I snapped a TON of photos at the event. There were tons of pro-touring cars at the show, and I was glad to see several of them doing laps on the track too.

There are even a few pics of the Popular Hotrodding photo shoot of the Detroit Speed '69 Camaro, to show you guys how much effort it takes to produce photos as nice as Hunkins does. Thanks for the photo tips Johnny, your time was appreciated greatly!

Everyone, enjoy!!!

sorry about the drool  on the vette...

For those that didn't attend, the indoor pics from IMG_508 and higher were from some guy's GARAGE on his property. Amazing stuff, it was like Disneyland for car enthusiasts.

i freaked the first time I saw one too. Then i saw the hood, and the magic was gone.

That hood is wrong. WRONG!!! fix it Unique. You're charging enough.

compare, hood pin location and the peak of the hood bump.

ok. i don't like it. The top doesn't work.

however, the real question is, Is this a pro-touring car or not?
The answer to this question will answer the question weather bob's SN65 is also. The concept is the same for both cars.

We were talking about that 69 Camaro somewhere on this forum and I cant find it now. These pics answer my question about it. I was wondering if it had 4th gen interior and it does. Windshield, doors, T-Tops, and rear hatch window. I respect him for trying it. There is a crap load of fabrication involved in that. I had thought about doing the T-tops with the 4th gen interior but I stopped at just doing the interior because I just couldnt get myself to do it. I ddint think it would look right.

It is a 2002 (I believe) or a 2000, that he grafted the 69 body panels to. Definitely a lot of work.

with the 69 camaro boom, they should sell good,i would build acouple to sell, best of both worlds.cheaper and faster.

Hi Tony,

I kind of like the way it looks (at least in the photos, most cars tend to look a bit different in person). I don't have as much trouble with the roof as I do with the length of the fender between the wheel and the door. It would look better if it was a tad longer.

You have made an interesting point. When does the line fade from updated classic to a late model with a body kit?

What is the defining criteria?

For example. Take a 71 Cuda. And you replace every last mechanical, electrical and interior with todays technology. Then you modify every last body panel, making basically the entire car a one off creation that has maybe 20% of original cuda left.

Is that a pro touring car?

Take a Corvette where the entire frame, suspension, drivetrain, electrical and mechanicals are all totally replaced with current technology. All that is left from the original vette is the fiberglass body and that is extensivly modified (late model door handles, flared fenders and quarters, etc).

Is that a pro touring car?

Take a 65 mustang where the entire chassis, suspension, drivetrain, electrical and mechanicals are all totally replaced with current technology. All that is left from the original stang is the body and that is extensivly modified (flared fenders and quarters, modified hood, etc).

Is that a pro touring car?

It is an interesting question, that I personally cannot answer. I think that it is an issue that needs to be decided by the pro-touring "powers that be".

Bill Howell

Honestly, no car here is very original if it is protouring, so I don't want to be the one to make the mark in the sand. Having seen SN 65 twice now, I like what I see. Comparing it to the white car is a bit unfair. Not that both don't have a ton of work, just style I guess. The SN65 looks like a 65 mustang at a glance. The camaro looks like a late model car with a 69 grafted on each end. I am not knocking it, it is just not me. I do not think the two pieces flow, even though the work was good.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program....

Didn't want to start a new thread just to start a flame war and have to take it down later. This way more minds get to ponder the question.
A locked thread falls off and wont get looked at. So it was simple logistics for me and my agenda. (lol)

Hi Tony,

The SN65 took first in it's catagory and came in second for the Year One Cup. First place in the YOC went to an early Chevelle (looked like a Riv at first glance). Third went to a Chevy II.

That is a replica of a Grand Sport. The original Grand Sports did track duty back in the mid 60's. In fact that is where Corvette originallly used the Z06 term. While I have never liked the headlight treatment, this was a good exsample of a gs.

LOL, this was the first Grand Run I have missed in 10 years, but unless one or the other event changes dates, it won't be my last one missed. The Year One Experience was more my speed, more than just walking and looking at showcars for sure.

Awh man, it sucked!! Not a single show stopper up there *at least that I saw*. I don't know if it was the rain... or if all the cool cars where down there at the Year One Event (From the looks of it, that is the case).

I even meant to email you to see if you were going.... and had I remembered to do that, I would have changed plans when you reminded me of the YOE. Getting older sucks! I'm definitely putting the YOE on my calendar for next year.

Bill Howell
04-26-2006, 05:45 PM
They did get the engine back in, and he drove the car to the event, but they did not get any dyno time and wanted to do that before running the track. The car was killer though and sounds like a top fuel funny car just cruising around. I followed him on the cruise a little ways, just sweet car. There will be a link to a video I took on our cruise tommorrow here, and you can at least hear a sound clip and see it coming at you in the video. There was nothing wrong with what I saw/heard. Hopefully they will dyno it in the next week or two after a few more test miles. Stay tuned.

I called a buddy of mine Ken Sarbo and conned him into coming to the YOE last week-end. He had the 62 Bubble Top Chevy with the 572..Green/Black..Paul Atkins Interior..He didn't get voted on either because he was parked in the paint company display. It is a supernice car built by Mike Bluett..It absolutely deserved to be in the finals..anyone see it?

Oh yeah, I drooled over it. That is the same car you sent me pictures of several weeks ago to post up in a thread. I talked with Ken both at Year One and again at Milton's. That was one nice car. Did he pick that spot or was he placed there. When I first looked at the car, I thought he was displaying it for the paint folks too. I have a weekness for 62 BT so it was one I took several pictures of.

They donated the paint for the build..he felt obligated to park it there when they asked him. He's feeling pretty dejected..he took it to the Super Chevy Show in Fla. a couple months ago..didn't get picked there either..lots of lesser cars picked over him. As he was loading the car, Super Chevy approached him to shoot the car. I had told him I wanted PHR to have the first refusal. He told them he couldn't let them shoot it as he had made another commitment..and why would they want to shoot it when it didn't even get in the top 10. They wrote a nasty blurb in a subsequent magazine about him getting his toys and going home because he didn't get a bunch of trophys. he's as nice a guy as I have ever met. He doesn't deserve that BS.

BRIAN
04-29-2006, 05:59 PM
That is funny, I barely read a word in SC but saw the negative comment about the 62 owner. I have to say I took their side until you just gave an explanation.

Anybody who doesn't think cars shows are who you know rather than what you have are either blind or associated with the show.

Your car (Cuda) is probably just too high dollar and well done that they do not want to loose the average guy as readers or participants. Either that or you car looks like SH-T in person? Only kidding, I would have to suspect it's the too well done deal.

They are having a show at the local Dairy Barn, maybe you can place ther?

Bob Johnson
04-30-2006, 05:53 AM
I doubt it..the local guys all show up with their cronies..draw straws..and vote for the winner..I don't care unless the prize is money or food..I don't want the trophies..you will never find a nicer guy and more humble guy than Ken Sarbo..His builder, Mike Bluett quit building cars because his cars never got the respect that they deserved. Mike is a quiet, humble, guy that just doesn't get noticed. He didn't politic with the POWERS TO BE and he and his cars just got ignored. It finally wore him down and he didn't want to continue building cars..
A real loss for car guys..he did some very innovative stuff. He's moved to Tennessee..not too far from Alloway..or Howell,, I'll miss him at the shows...

I always say that I judge my builds on how it is accepted or not by the real car guys. Those who come up and notice that small killer detail that took forever to accomplish.

It drives my wife and buddies crazy but I always leave when the start the trophy deal. I just do not want to know if I won or lost. Honestly I just love building the cars and hate the judging deal. Great people to be met at athe shows but you can't take the judging seriously or it will drive you crazy.

Bob, I drooled over that black/green bubble top. There are a couple pics of it in the link I posted at the beginning of this thread.

I also thought it was a paint display car. They typically do not allow vendor cars to be in the show. My '69 didn't get voted on or judged last year because I was in the Year One booth.

The judges are media guys, sponsoring vendor reps, previous YR1 cup winners, and various automotive professionals. Probably 30 people in all.

The Year One Cup pays $5K in car parts as the prize. That's something to get riled over. I don't care what anyone says, every owner and builder wants their accomplishment appreciated and admired by their contemporaries. 99% of the people at car shows just don't have a clue as to what goes into a top quality build. One off custom pieces just don't get noticed by everyone. Lots of car guys that attend shows regularly look at the Cuda and think it would cost $150K to build.

ProdigyCustoms
05-05-2006, 05:17 AM
$150K? Why so much? LOL!
