Cheapest paint job ever...

I have a pretty small budget to do a PT car, so paint has never been considered. I know eventually I will have the cash to go ahead and paint my car right.

If I had another project (A BEATER PROJECT), I would consider this.

About 7 years ago I sprayed my old mud running Blazer with commercial paint that we used to used in Industrial buildings. Similar enamel paint as what was used above. It wasnt real shiny but I was surprised how well it held up after all the abuse. The paint never peeled off at all. THe nice part was how cheap it was and it covered the original ugly brown with no problem. Good way to to if you have a car you dont care much about. Using rollers, now thats just too funny. Our 67 Mustang was rolled with latex paint. yes LATEX paint. Thats why the car was soo rusty when we stripped the paint off.

I had a friend that had a 68 Camaro painted and when it was done you could see that the door gap wasn't quite rite and my friend asked the body shop what to do to make it look right and they told him he needed to alter the quarter panel to make it right. When he asked them about what to do about the painting and whether or not he could schedule it in for painting, the body man told him he couldn't get him back in for weeks and that it would be easier to just brush on the paint,block sand and buff. You never could tell that it had been done and the paint was Dupont acrylic enamel.

I have always been a proponent of PAINT is PAINT and that it really doesn't care how it gets on as long as there is enough to cover and sand flat. Think about it? how does the paint really ever know?

I do however believe that you have to do opaque colors. Metallics,pearls and candy's are out of the question do to the type of control and consistenancy that has to be maintained but opaque colors just don't have the problems.

So goodluck and go for it guys and the spraycan thing has been done sooooo many times I can't begin to count how many times over the years I have seen it work out great.

I guess I should say its not the type of roller that you would think of painting your living room with.
They used a high density foam type roller with a paint that from what I read was designed to be applied in this manner.

He estimated a total of $50 in materials.

I agree. I had them do their $250 paint job on a work truck I have. Looked pretty good, well, good enough.

I don't know if I could of did it that cheap. Really, I just didn't want to screw with it.

Did they do all the bodywork and everything or just paint it? Do they tape it off or did you do that? I am pretty sure when they do the cheap version they just use acrylic enamel. You can buy even the metallic acrylic enamel for around $100 from most paint stores. It can also be wet sanded and buffed. Acrylic enamel paint jobs can look pretty good but nothing like a basecoat clearcoat paint job.
Like he said in the first post, this thread is basically a way to paint cheap beater cars or cars you arent too worried about the finish.

They can do whatever you want. But for $250, they mask it and shoot it.

Dang that is a very good deal then. $250 and they do all the masking. Hard to beat that deal if you just want to get a regular car or beater painted. I have been trying to decide a good cheap way to re-paint my 79 4x4 truck. I really dont want to waste the money and BC/CC it so more than likely I would spray it with acrylic enamel.

Jsapata....kinda off subject but I wanna thank you for posting that first link to Moparts. I found an old friend over there that I haven't talked to an almost 13 years. He owns Modern Cylinder Head (http://www.moderncylinderhead.com/), he responded to that thread under the username "moderncylinder". I'm heading out to see his shop this weekend. Ok, I do not have the patience to read through 30+ pages. The general gist is that Rustoleum is thinned and rolled on with sanding between every two coats.

I looked at the gallon cans of Rustolem at Lowes and they were oil based. Is this what everyone is using in this process? I could swear somewhere I read that this was acrylic/enamel....

Thinking of trying this on my truck, and don't want to :drive2:
