Hello all

I am getting ready to paint a 73 RS Orion silver and need to make a primer color decision. In the past I have always used a color of primer that is close to the final paint color. Following this procedure, I would normally shoot silver over grey primer.

I got to thinking, which usually get me in trouble, that if I used a black primer the silver may have a little black component to it. I am considering painting black stripes and thought that might help tie the colors together a little better.

How much does the color of primer or sealer have on the final color?

Whats peoples opion on 2nd gen with stripes on a RS, do like the cars with stripes or solid color?

Thanks
Dave

I like stripes on 2nd gens.....definately better than no stripes in my opinion.

The color of the primer will lighten or darken the base that your putting over it. The transparency of the base also plays a role in the final color as well. Orion silver covers pretty well as far as silvers go and if you paint it over black vs. a grey primer you will get a slight difference but not enough to get the effect your looking for.

Edit: Stripes that are a few shades darker than the base would look excellent.

Thanks, I think I will just do what I normally would do and use a grey primer.

If you want to go nuts, you could base it in black and mix silver ultra mini flake with some SG-100 and throw that over the base....but that might be a little too much bling for ya.

Yea that may be a little too much. The car was originally silver so I thought I would repaint it silver, just wanted something different than the factory color. I am building the car to sell and don't want to get too carried away.

If you have shot Orion which one do you like better, the Glamour Metallic (larger flake) or the Fine metallic. On the color chip I like the heaver flake Glamour but I don't know what it will look like on the car. I don't want it to look like a bass boat.

On a different subject, I am going to paint my 69Z with Corvette electron blue and ghost Z28 stripes. I was thinking of HOK Alabaster white or Silver dry pearl mixed in SG-100 over the blue for the stripes. Any other suggestions on pearls or techniques I might use?

I prefer the finer metallics for overall jobs. However, it might sell better if it "sparkles" more.

Using white for ghosting won't give you the look your after(IMO). The silver pearl mix is the route you want to go to achive your ghost stripes, however, the silver over the blue has been done to death(again, IMO) Look into the dry blue pearls and look into an ice blue pearl as well(possibly a fuzz to blingy) Look into KBC (kandy base coats) as an option as well. Those mixed with the sg-100 will give outstanding ghosting capabilities as well as solid colors. I think you should stay within the blue hues for the stripes.

Thanks for the ideas. You think the silver will work better than white, how about the silver white or white sparkle?

I never thought about the blue pearls. So something like the Lazuli Blue or blueberry over the Electron blue? Or the Kosmic Ocean Blue? The Kosmic Ocean blue looks like it has some silver in it, that may be the way to go.

I plan on preping the old hood and spraying several pearls on it before making the final decision.

Do you use a set ratio when adding pearl to the intercoat? or is that just another factor in creating a look you want? Is there a good starting point? I would like to minimize the # coats of pearl/intercoat to minimize the mask line in the clear.

Thank for the help

after primer, and prep work, lay a coat of tinted sealer over your primer, If you tint it right, you'll use less paint material for proper coverage. Also the sealer looks down the primer and any platic work so you won't have any bleeding. Good Luck

HOK makes a silver sealer covers real well and looks just like Orion Silver.Give that a light sand and go over it with Orion. It takes a lot of coats to get FULL coverage with Orion base.

I may be wrong but I was told by Wyotech that your not supposed to sand sealer, make sure the body is straight and block the primer and when ur rady for paint lay a wet coat of sealer just before paint.

U shouldn't have to sand the sealer before the top coat but we do it just to hit any dust nibs if any.

Dave, there is no set ratio of pearl to clear. However, the less you put in, the more coats you need to get the desired effect which means thicker tape lines. You can go a little heavy in the mix as long as it's mixed thoroughly. When I do pearl graphics I never get a tape line once the first clearing is sanded and buffed. If your after a ghosting effect, dry pearls are usually the eaisest. You can use the Kosmic, KBC, or PBC lines and they will all work. I've just found that you will get a tape line with these, which is fine, but it'll require two clearing sessions. If I use any type of silver in a graphic, it's the Silverwhite Pearl. You can usually over-reduce this for a ghosting effect, but you need to be particullarly mindfull of mottleing.
As far as sealing, I choose not to seal anything as it usually is just another coat that attracts dust. As long as the primer is one uniform color, I prefer to spray over it.
