View Full Version : DSE coilover install questions...long

First post! Long time lurker...

Finally got around this winter to welding/assembling my DSE coilover setup...and I just got the subframe back from the powdercoater.:jump:
Can someone roughly outline the assembly procedure (I moved this summer and now can't find the directions) :hand:I have attached the a-arms.

I think I need to:
1. Compress the spring externally (1" maybe?)
2. Insert shock
3. Tighten up the coilover adjusters. I have the BBC springs (650#) with a BBC/Alum intake and heads/alum radiator/battery in trunk/Hotchkis rear springs/17" wheels. I'd appreciate rough "dial-in" from anyone...sweet as this setup is, it looks like a real PITA to adjust more than once...
4. Mount it up...upside down.

I need a different external spring compressor, the knuckles of mine had too much steel inside the spring and interfered with the shock, so I couldn't use it. Brand/Store of one that works?
Any other tips/tricks?
Thanks for everything,
Scott

The spring should assemble as part of the shock to make a unit and require no crompressing. Have you tried e-mailing DSE to get the directions form them?

It was nighttime/weekend, so no I didn't call oremail dse. will do it today of course...thanks

yes, I assembled the spring/shock, but without compressing, I don't see how I'm gonna attach to the a-arms...also, I'm pretty sure you have to compress the spring some minimum distance as a preload.

I searched the site but didn't find any pics...i recall a long time ago a post by tito? that had a great step by step photo montage, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks,
Scott

set it up so there is little/no load on the adjuster so the spring has no slack in it, then once you get it on the ground adjust it to your liking
from there.

Do you have the spanner wrench for the adjustment nuts on the shock body? That will be of great help in changing the ride height on the shock.

Check out this earlier post. I asked the same question.

VanB,
I saw that post...I hoped someone who had the DSE kit with a BBC could ballpark my first attempt.
Right now mine is installed per Homerneedspeed's suggestions, but it will be awhile before I get the engine/wheels/and sheetmetal back on to see what the ride height will turn out to be.
Thanks all for the help.
