Im gonna buy a 383 stroker from recon for $2000. Its not that bad but considering im only 17 and have a tight budget its all i can afford. here are the specs that i got on it:
Dart heads w/ 2.02 1.60 valves .560'' lift springs
cam has a lift of 4.88 int. .510 exh. w/ 114 lobe sep.
it is rated at 400hp and 440 lb
What cheap upgrades can i do to it to beat my dads SRT-10 viper?

Agreed with above.
But if you are going for cheap HP, Nitrous. A carb plate system should put you up to 550hp if tuned right, and it wont hurt the buget too bad.

When you say you want to beat your dads viper are you talking road courses or drag strip? The engine is only the beginning but a 383 is a great start. $2000 is a good deal.

$2000 for a complete 383 - too good to be true, stay away from it.
Time for my speech on engine prices...
There is very little profit margin on engine parts, at best 35%.
All professional engine builders pay about the same for their engine parts.
Yes there is some money that can be saved in machine work, though lower employee wages ect... BUT we are talking about less than $1500 savings AT BEST.
So - using this information we can infer:
If you find an engine for signifigantly less money than everywhere else than something major is either missing, substituted, or done half-assed.
FYI A properly done 383 stroker should cost $5000-$8000

Lowend is right, I had a 383 built just this past summer and it also has Dart heads, Eagle rotating assembly, big solid cam, 6" rods, wisco pistons... etc... With all the machine work, balancing, head work and assembly of just the long block, I've got well over 6K in it. And I didn't go with all the High end goodies, just a step below that. So I'd almost be safe to say that "it's almost too good to be true." Just my .02 worth. Good luck Trond.

I dont agree with this $5,000-$8,000 statement. I had mine built for $3,000 about 2-3 years ago and it has somewhere around 400hp.

I guess stock cast iron heads make it a little cheaper too. But considering how well this car runs I cant even imagine what aluminum heads would do to it!

Its not bad... kinda mismatched.
I would be suprised if it makes more than 400HP
