275/40 is too wide for an 18x8. 18x9" would be much safer, and have less bulge.

What if they were Drag radials, and that is the set up of the car street /strip.
I currently run 275/50/15 , they are bulgy and sway a bit in corners, used to it.

I've seen lots of the late-model Mustang guys use 275-40-17 on their stock 17x8" wheels. Some brands will bulge more than others, due to variances in actual tire section width. Nitto drag radials seem to be the narrowest 275-40-17s out there, they hardly hang off an 8" wheel at all.
If you can stomach it, take a look in the wheels & tires forum on www.corral.net (http://www.corral.net), a Mustang site. You'll probably find some pics there.
FWIW, most tire manufacturers recommend at least 8-1/2" wheels for 275-40, 9" or 9.5" is better.

That tire has a much bigger sidewall, though. As the sidewall increases, you can run a wider tirer on the same width rim. I've got 305/70/16s on 16x8 on my Tahoe, and the 8" rim width is within the manufacturers suggested specs. If they're drag radials, I'd see what the manufacturer suggested rim width is and then go from there. I'd be nervous about racing on that setup, though. JMHO.
...A lot of mustang guys run the 275s on 17x8s and a lot of Camaro guys run 315s on 9.5" or 10" wide wheels--that doesn't make it safe.

I agree. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.
