I am building a Pro Touring style Ford and I am lost when it comes to Ford engines. There are so mant different mdels it is crazy. I am trying not to throw the LS1 or BBC in there but need help.
It is a heavy wagon and needs some serious go. It also needs a rear sump either avail or stock.
Are the Cobra supercharged engines worth the swap? Are they really a port and tune to 450RWHP?
Older style 347 DSS long block with supercharger?
460 or 514 crate engine? Too heavy
What would a Ford diehard put in there?
What is the "IN" FORD engine???
Any help is greatly apperciated.

I'm a chevy guy but I slave away in a Ford body shop so I'll ask some questions Monday at work.

The '03 Cobra motors are a pulley swap and ported blower away from 500rwhp. Add a twin screw KB into the mix and 600+rwhp is the norm.

Sounds like you need torque to move a heavy car. Small block options include 9.5 deck dart or svo based motors up to 440 in. Big blocks are typically more expensive, but make more torque. There are lots of good heads to support either choice. How much power do you want, what rpm range can you live with and how much can you spend?

Agree with funcars. Stroked 351 Windsor (Ford or Dart aftermarket block) to 440ci, and you could STILL run a supercharger or roots style blower. There are aluminum SBF Windsor heads in the high 300cfm range for a couple grand +/-. Light motor + big block cubic inches + high flow heads + supercharger + wagon = ULTRA FAST SLEEPER =).
For myself and my cars I like the high revving ultra small blocks. I wouldn't go over 347ci...but my cars tend to be less than 3000lbs, and preferably closer to 2000, so the lack of mass torque plus the quick revability are assets. 2500lbs + 7800rpm shifts = OHHH HELL YEAH! =)
Good luck!

A stroker 351W is probably the most cost-efficient choice for a torquey engine. Stroker kits making 392 and 408 CI displacment are readily available these days.
Ford Racing Perf. Parts has a 392 inch crate engine available, rated at 430 hp / 450 torque. http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=6695 Add EFI to that, you would have a strong performer.
The 03-04 Cobra engines can make big power, but the downside is that they are wider than a 460, and just as heavy ... a lot of weight for 281 CID, blown or not.

If you've got the coin, I say go with a new Shelby all aluminum 427FE. Aluminum block, aluminum heads, 600hp... seems perfect.

Are the 03 Cobra engines that heavy? Aren't they all aluminum?
I have contacted DSS about a blown 347 and they are also working out a N/A 408 combo.
What about the Ford 514 crate engine??
I am looking for either new hot tested or dyno run engine. I like to work out problems before it gets in the car.
Thanks Brian

Nice =)
I've heard good and bad about DSS, much like anywhere else. I'm going to be using them myself though, for the bare block I'm using for my 331.
Far as the crate motor, thought you weren't really wanting a big block? That opens up a whole new world! With your combo I'd go big inch stroker, or even bigger inch stroker big block!

Are the 03 Cobra engines that heavy? Aren't they all aluminum?
No they aren't. The previous 96 - 02 Cobra engines were aluminium blocks, but when Ford went with the Eaton S/C on the 03 - 04 cars, they also changed them to an iron block for durability. The shortblock is relatively compact on the 4.6, it's the giant cylinder heads that make it 30 inches wide.
The 07 Shelby 5.4 S/C will be iron blocks as well.

Then I guess the Crate 514 is a good deal?
Why are the two 460 crate engines not listed as street engines? Also one has different cam? The 10.5 compression?
I am waiting for World's site to get back up to check theri offerings.
There is also a 01 Lightning set up avail local.
I still have to say Chevy's are a lot easier deal but I will try and keep it all Ford.
Thanks Brian

Chevy's are only easier because you know them lol. If I were to consider building a setup like yours, only GM, I'd have to ask about it too!

Stay away from FE motors. Can't begin to tell you how much I hate 'em! Go 392 or 408 Windsor. Awesome engines. Did one (392) for a buddies 65 coupe. Tight fit but sweet!
