So I ahd to get busy getting the remaining parts on order and after its all said and done as I sit here getting ready to send out all these Money orders, I realized "I'm crazy"!! I haev spent a huge amount of cash today. But when everything gets here I'll have everything needed to finish the car. Here is overview of what all was done

It's best to just put those thoughts out of your head.. If you start to think about how much this hobby costs you will soon be needing counseling..

Ten G's goes pretty fast.. almost scary fast..

When I restored my 66 Shelby GT 350 race car in the late 90's I kept EVERY receipt associated with the cars construction and completed an Excel spreadsheet so I could know exactly how much the car cost to build and the "hours/time" necessary to complete the car.

ONLY upon completion of the project did I hit the "sum" function on the program and learned that the car cost $34,898.22 to build and this includes the fact that I only paid $1,700 for this original 66 Shelby GT350 rolling body shell in 1995! The restoration started in early 1996 and the car was completed in December 1998.

The interesting part is that the ONLY labor expense or outside service expense paid to someone else for work on the car or rebuilding of parts is as follows:

Initial purchase of the car $1,700.00
Toploader transmission race prep rebuild $850.00
Roll cage fabrication and aluminum work $2700.00
Sandblast body shell $275.00
Engine machine work and engine assembly, no parts $1,600.00
Frame machine time to check/straighten body $350.00

Total $7,475.00

The rest of the money spent to build this car was $34,898.22 - $7,475 = $27323.22. This amount, $27,323.22, was totally spent on parts, supplies, fittings, brakes, lines, fans, hoses, paint, bodywork supplies, bondo, tires, wheels, seats, fire system, guages, suspension, welding supplies, radiator, etc etc. ALL THE LABOR to build the car was performed by my friend Mark and myself and there is NO expense charged for labor in the above price to complete the car. WE DID EVERYTHING labor wise from fabrication, to paintwork, electrical wiring, exhaust fabrication, design etc. You name it, WE DID IT! Anything aside from the initial expenses outlined above, everything was completed by Mark and myself. This build took 1,992 hours per the "billed time" spent on this car by Mark and I as noted in my Excel spreadsheet at completion of the project. At $30.00/hour (that's cheap) for billed time in a race/restoration shop, the labor bill on this car would have been $59,760.00 if the work was done in a commercial shop. Sure a commercial shop "may" have completed the project quicker however this car was NOT a cherry to start with. We completed a "concours" rotisserie restoration on this race car and have since raced this car across the US from coast to coast in over 40 different Vintage Races that last 7 years. The car was in photographs in 4 magazines in 2005.

That means that this car could have cost over $95,000 to build in 1998 in a commercial shop! Was it worth $95,000 at the time of completion? NO! Is it now? I doubt it!

The point of my post is that I made a "guess" and Mark made a "guess" of the cost to build the car "before" we hit the sum button on the spreadsheet. My guess was $25,000.00 and Mark's was $22,000.00. Mark was way low since he was not writing the checks! I "was" writing the checks and I was $10,000.00 off in my guess of how much I spent to build the car and I "thought" I had a good grasp of the costs.

The point is that "if" you do keep track of how much you spend on your build it will SCARE YOU! Second, double the amount you "think" it will take to build your car and you "may" be close to correct! Properly building a race car or Pro-Touring car is EXPENSIVE!!!! This is why it is MUCH cheaper to buy a car built than build one yourself. Let the other poor ba$tard spend all his time and money building the car while you enjoy his car. In hindsight I should have done that!

One day I'd like to build a car that's goes faster than my money. In the 11 months I've had the project I've spend over 15,000.00 and I still need a trans.,interior pieces, paint, fuel tank and then there the little pieces that will nickle & dime me to death.

Just my father and law and myself, working like slaves doing what we love!! But I got to slow down, the customers are getting a little mad that it takes me a year to do there's

I'm a little late but I wanted to say. I guess I'm pretty lucky with my car expenses because I take care of the account and my wife never looks at the Visa/Mastercard bill. If she actually knew I would probably be single. :)
